Dr. Mercola has great info on why not to use sunscreen. BUt here is some extras for you protection
Sunscreens do not block 100% of the sunšs rays, so we need to increase antioxidant rich foods in our diet and use antioxidant rich skin care products.

Antioxidants are very high in the Oberry family, especially the darker berries.

Ingredients to look for when purchasing sunscreens/skin care products:

Green tea: this antioxidant prevents oxidative stress by reducing the number of sunburn cells and diminishes the DNA damage caused by the sun.

Pomegranate: this antioxidant has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties and when added to sunscreens, the SPF activity becomes stronger.

Vitamin C: this antioxidant rich vitamin prevents free radical damage to the skin and has anti-inflammatory properties.

I'm in the sun all day long, and have a history of skin cancer in my family.

They are made with these, or do we crudely prepare them ourselves?

Ingest those products. Increase your essential oils and organic veggies and limit the exposure between 11 and 1. Gradually increase your exposure duration. And look for skin creams that are organic and contain the previously mentioned ingredients forget the spf shit.
