yah I thought after taking a year off and a half off competing that he would have put on a lot more size but he was pretty much the same as his nationals in 2009.

He's got a good upper body but his legs are lacking and Antoine looked better IMHO. I think Antoine got his conditioning down pretty good this time...something he's not done at the Nationals yet. Hopefully he does them this year and dials it in nicely.

And I hear ya about the quitting part...I decided to start playing soccer again, first game I pulled both Hamstrings. Second game 3 weeks later I strained my left hamstring.....I think in the next 3 weeks when that is healed up they should go down to slight strains and then I'll be good from then on, lol. But now I cant play soccer OR workout like I want to...I cant win either way!

I thought judging was bad in canada....those are some seriously variable scores figure, fitness, and bikini. At least they had 9 judges though...although, I can't figure out what formula they used. cancelling the 2 highs and 2 lows doesn't get the score.

Why is that?

Trying to have a kid, and restart my career in nursing, which took a huge nosedive due to being a roided out freak. Also I pretty much come to the realization that my body isn't going to take me where my dreams were willing it to. I'm too blocky in the waist, not big enough in the limbs, with no freaky body parts. My knees are pretty much shot. There are other activities outside of bodybuilding I want to do such as wakeboarding, squash and whatever else that comes up. I want to have a kid, and I want to be able to play with he or she, not be a cripple.

Not saying I won`t every compete again...I still covet that sword I got shafted out of at the Emerald a few years back, but definitely giving up on dreams and goals of being a pro... It would be cool to have a kid and have the kid be able to see me compete (just a thought)

If I continued, as far as I see it I could scrape out a few top five placings at the nationals the next few years, and maybe get a card as a master, but I`m definitely not good enough to put myself through all that work and abuse to my body.

As I said, its amazing what happens when you go off for a long while and smell the coffee!

Ihear you on that p22, Im not even at the level you are.....I enjoy bbing, i enjoy doing many other things.....It is sooooo true how things are thought about differently while not on sauce.....Its like a split personality to be honest....Im generally kind all the time, but when on, i just think differently about several aspects of my life.....im 13 weeks out now and really am wondering why im not enjoying my time on earth, rather than staying home, maneuvering my whole life around my eating and working out, when i could be going out, and also we are getting to the point of thinking of starting a family as well....WTF ???
It is good to hear your perspective on it though p22, real good...

What an honest full out thread , one of the best i have seen on here !! THIS IS TRUE STRENGTH !! When it comes to my kids there is NOTHING i wouldnt do for them , knowing what you want is step one & you have done that !! No reason you still cant hit the gym and stay tip top ,but if you truely want what you say above....your heart will lead you to the right place !!! Good luck man !

To be honest, I'm in the same "place". I think I've pushed my body as far as I can take it (safely) and am really happy with my physique. I'm taking the year off competing, but not off training. It's just a different kind of training now as it's not to the extreme. I'm enjoying the workouts, living "normal" and spending quality time with the hubby and kids. I'm actually training for a 5K run in May...soooo different as I'm NOT a cardio person....lol...just want to try something differnet. I'll still be at the shows...actually will be on the judging panel for OPA in May (Mississauga), so not leaving the scene entirely. Will I compete again? Most likely, yes, but not right now:)

Competeing and having kids is a hard thing to do. Not impossible, but hard. I won't be doing nationals this year, and party because I am having another baby in the summer. I was going to do it until I heard I'd be moving and starting a new job - which just put it over the edge. The problem is having enough time to do everything. I'd love to be able train an hour and a half or more each day, work an 8 regular daytime hour job + another hour of travel and have enough time with your wife and kids before they actually go to bed.

But the reality is, once you have kids and a regular job, the lifestyle just doesn't work the same way. For me to train consistently, I would basically have to let my wife takeover the kids routine, and only see them awake on weekends...OR, train less consistently. The choice is obvious for anyone who is in a similar situation. I will be back on stage no doubt, but it won't be this year. I am still making consistent gains, and my gym time is important to keep me sane...but putting in the normal bodybuilder hours would make one insane eventually. So I still have a few more years in the sport. And of course, I have to be provincial champion again in my new province of course!

May also be switching careers again as well.....My job alone is 12-14 hours/day, let alone prepping food etc, cardio....not saying it is to hard, as i am not a quitter, but i havent committed to this contest yet, hence no journal etc....i am more like where 69 is at....i just want to spend quality time with my Girl, and friends etc....I honestly havent done that in so long....i just basically had the light switch on over the last couple of weeks, the timing of this thread is impeccable....i love to lift, and be strong, and have a good physique, i will compete someday again im sure.....Right now i just turned 40 and man my brain is in overdrive thinking about life...im not going to buy a cherry red corvette or anything...lol...Just back to who i was before i began focussing on being an alberta champ....Honestly, i dont care anymore, i just want to live, have fun, hopefully be blessed and didnt do any damage to my self, and have a rugrat or two....
But when maintaining 265 lbs and more when you should only be 225 or so, is tough to do....Period, i just need some down time....Our whole existance has been cooking, gym, cleaning after cooking and trying to squeeze an hour together of quality during the week...Only put 800 kms on my harley last yr, thats unacceptable....:beer
Good thread...

Im in the same boat P22, we just had another baby boy 3 weeks ago and I thought having 1 kid was tough...2 is a whole different ballgame, lmao, but I wouldnt give it up for the world....1 piece of advice when trying with your wife--->HCG!!! lol.

I always thought I could do well and had the goods to be a top BBer, and I still do think so. But I just cannot dedicate all I have to attain that goal. If I was still single then I would do that. What people dont realize is to be top level Bber, even at the National Level aiming for the pro's, most of these guys eat, sleep, and breathe bodybuilding. They are in the gym all day and night and most work at a gym training or have some cushy job or dont work at all. I have a career and work 13hr shifts, I have a wife that needs attention as well as now 2 young boys to raise into men and enjoy life with them. Bodybuilding is selfish and time consuming prepping for a show...takes a toll on the family.

I am also thinking Masters one day and I know you (P22 or I) would do well there for sure, lol. As well as that bloody sword at the Emerald Cup, I had no idea you did that show too. What year? I am actually thinking of doing it 2012 if I can make the improvements I want to make....Im prolly gonna have to quit soccer though as I havent been able to train properly in over a month now, hahaha. I wont quit soccer though its too much fun....next winter its time to get back into snowboarding, another old passion of mine I stopped because I got too big and didnt want to get hurt because Id miss gym time.

But I say lets do it....Masters! lol.

I am obviously out for this season, unless they have a huge pregnant women division this season, lol.
But, I will compete again. Just not sure when. I would never say never.
It certainly is a selfish sport and it is hard to focus on life, or anything, when show prepping.

It's fun to think I might compete next season (2012) but I am not going to rush things, for both physical and family reasons.

Good post Jo, but as most of us, theres contradiction all ovr in that post....

I sit here thinking some days.... screw it, im just going to hang out and keep chuggin at work, make time to ride my bike, go out for supper and entertainment with friends, go to the gym as often as i can....Not focus on improving and beating the log book, Go to the gym, smiling, happy, having fun....yada, yada....
Then i start imagining being ripped, seeing veins all over, feeling strong and lean in the gym....Then i hear a song id love to pose to...It brings visions of power to my head...Then without feeling it happen, im sitting there imagining, going hard in the gym to look my best when ripped, start thinking of putting on my headphones and pulling my hat down, not making eyecontact with anyone until im out of my zone and beat my log book, then ill relax and chat with buds.....
Im retarded....

Yah IW, Oh my God, I get the same thoughts into my head... One thing for sure though there is nothing like achieving your goal... when I won the Manitobas in 08, after trying 5 times...beating Mike Zylstra, which everybody thought was a walk to win it, it was the biggest high I have ever had in my life... it lasted 3 months!

Jo: 2012 Emerald cup lol perfect show because I can diet while there is still snow on the ground... although that will reck me playing squash so I really don't know. I did it in 2009 won the shw but lost the overall to a guy who was the home-town favorite who had competed there for five years. The judges said he was harder than me, but the pics show I had striated glutes, and his were fat, and so was his back. I know coz I walked up the stairs right behind him for the overall, and I remember at the time silently gloating to myself, thinking I had him beat.

Great thread guys. In the same boat with many of you but for somewhat different reasons yet common as well - family and friends but mainly family.

Had a friend of 15 years who has a wife and 2 little girls diagnosed with lymph node cancer back in May. He lives in Toronto and I currently live in Ottawa. I made a committment to myself and him to see him as often as possible and so far I have been making the drive or flight back to Toronto at least twice a month and often 3 times a month to spend with him. There was hope in May but there is no hope now and hasn't been for a few months now. He will die and I am surprised he's lasted this long.

I've battled some health and injury issues over the past year and a half myself and I've basically just realized that life is short. Its an amazing (and scary) thing that happens with age and for me that's no regrets. I don't want to look back in life when the people who mattered most to me are gone and I realized that I WASN'T too busy, that I COULD have made the time to spend with them but didn't because I was selfish.

I quit my job which I have 3 weeks left. I am moving back to Toronto with no job togo back to and I honestly couldn't be happier about that. Next up is getting my health in order. These have been my goals for the New Year and so far I am on track. And what makes me happiest is that THESE are the types of goals that honestly matter most in life. Not how you look and whether you're huge or ripped or whatever. Quality of life...

Wow this thread is a little depressing lol. Everyone is realizing that their past dreams are but distant impossibilities.

I'll just say that i've always known that i'm not going to be an ifbb pro. I train and compete to be the best though. I enjoy achieving (being crazy ripped) what others only wish they could do. So i've had a small measure of success and yes it's a constant struggle to keep a balanced life (yes i'm married and have 2 kids) and i didn't compete until i had kids.
The other day my youngest took my Canadian First Place trophy to school and one of my pics to show off to all his friends...He's proud his Dad is different.
All this to say. Training, competing, life, job, friends all don't have to be mutually exclusive if your heart is into it. Good luck to all of you. Enjoy what you do no matter what that is.

It's a common occurance in the community. Life gets in the way unless you make a living from it somehow. Priorities change in life as we get older. I have seen so many get into the lifestyle, then out, then back in years later, then out. Some never return.

Didn't you quit bulking because you couldn't handle it? If so, what makes you different? You're just doing what's easiest for you because that's what your body prefers.

I don't see anyone in here saying they are giving up training. I just hear them saying there are other priorities which are more important to them right now.

almost a bingo for me...No one will train harder when I am in the gym...but priorities will keep me away from the gym as often as I should until thing settle in a little more. But its analogous to studying for a test...You can study 20 hours, and get you're A+, or study 120 and get an A++...diminishing returns at some point. For me, it am the first to admit I am not giving a 100% right now. But my 95% effort will get my 99% results. that extra 1% is just too much (for now).

training hard for me now is doing dumbel arm curls with the 30's. It doesn't matter if I used the 50's 60's or 70's, the only difference would be my arm would hurt more. I know I'm not going to get any bigger, unless I'm on sauce so I don't waste my time.
I'm 222-225 at a decent bodyfat level 10-12% (I competed this year at 225) so my clothes all still fit and I am fine with were I am at. Only difference now is my t-shirts arn't stretched at the arms. Gives me a reason to wear button up shirts now.

I agree that if your priorities change then that's cool, but the point i was making is that competing and having a life does not have to be one or the other thing. I just wanted to point that out to the non competitive bodybuilders on this board.

It doesn't have to be mutually exclusive at all...But MP makes a good point: "Life gets in the way unless you make a living from it somehow"...There is no way anyone can say that this sport does not have a negative effect on your family (spouse, kids) and friends. Same can be said about any higher level athlete though...the time and dedication it takes is only worth it if you're family understands it, and allows for it. But there is no doubt in my mind that the last month in particular is no good for family life...even if you are great at keeping your cool and never argue, etc...there is still a lack of energy, which means less effort made for say taking kids to a playground, etc.

That's why many of us decide to call it quits at some point...I honestly think the best thing to do is compete every 4-5 years. That way you're not doing a pre contest diet so often...and besides, less time dieting away muscle.

We should really point out to non-competitive bodybuilders that it isn't easy to just compete, and they SHOULD know that you're life outside of bodybuilding will suffer in 1 way or another (as well as those close to you). Saying it won't would be a lie.

I stay within 10lbs of my comp weight, so dieting down is really not too tough (though it has it's moments) day to day. Even if you can find a decent balance with training, eating, family, etc. lets not foget that it is NOT CHEAP to compete. I just found that it was becoming more and more difficult to justify spending x amount of dollars on ME when I have a husband and 3 kids...

Good point...you can choose to make a living from the sport or you can change how you make a living to help your situation.
I gave up my downtown job to stay home with my son and to make some cash for the family I started a small home daycare with a couple of kids from the community. This gave me more time with my son so I didn't feel guilty about spending so much time in the gym or so much time away from my baby. It's not for everyone but it worked well for us and our situation.

I think at 6 foot tall max is 190 lbs or something like that.......Have to be fairly small framed to make it in there....I was quite surprised at the stats required...

189.2lbs They use this formula: Max weight (in KG) =height (in cm)-100(max plus kg allowance)

A: up to and including 170cm + 2kg
B: up to and including 175cm + 4kg
C: up to and including 180cm + 6kg
D: Over 180kg
D(1)up to and including 190cm + 8kg
D(2)up to and including 198cm + 9kg
D(3)Over 198cm + 10kg

It's basically in line with higher level natural guys.

So at 6'3 I'd have to come in at 209 lbs? Oooooh that would be tough, even as a natural competitor, I think I'd feel scrawny.....but yet it seems interesting.

Delt King

It all depends on your genetic structure. My top limit is 179.6lbs and every time i approach that kind of weight for competition most people guess me at a much higher bodyweight...hell everybody thinks i'm some kind of geared up meathead even at that weight. It's about creating the illusion of being bigger than you really are. Small waist, wide lats, capped delts and decent traps certainly is a prerequisite to placing well in classic.

Last question regarding the classic class is it tested? I compete Natural, and would be interested in this kinda thing, just curious if it's like the WBFF or more like INBF, IDFA styles? Being that Mark Anthony Wingsom who placed 5th I know competes in the WBFF... Thanks for all the prompt answers so far.

I am pretty sure that the Arnold Classic does not do testing but there are competitions within the WBFF and OPA that do random drug testing. The show you enter should tell you if it is tested or not. Maybe someone else can chime in about the Arnold but I don't think it is tested.
