today in health psychology we were learning about health promoting behaviors. We got to the topic of weight management and my interest was peaked. The teacher then went on to say things like fasting is an effective method for losing weight fast. My response went something like this:
J "What are you talking about?"
T "What do you mean?
J " Fasting isn't a healthy way to lose weight."
T " Well by all means, enlighten me."
J "First of all, any weight you lose is going to be mostly water, which will get put back on as soon as you start eating PROPERLY again. On top of that, your body has no protein source to maintain body systems. Its going to get the amino acids it needs from your muscles. On top of that, your body is starving and will soak up and store every calorie you feed it after you start eating again, most likely leading to weight GAIN. Oh and since your body has less muscle than before your fast, you can't burn as many calories at rest anymore. Fasting is not good.

T "Well many things in this course are not black and white"

I am going to be a smart ass and say the teacher was 100% correct when he said fasting is an effective way to lose weight fast. From what I got out of this, he didn't really say it was healthy (although he was dumb to question you why it wasn't when you brought it up). But yeah - you'll lose weight, but that's a no brainer. That's like a health class telling you if you have sex you might get pregnant.

Anyone who competes in a sport where you drop 20 pounds in a day knows all too well ....although, who says that's healthy either....

Steve is correct, though by what you said he also didn't see it as unhealthy either, which is retarded....start taking a video camera and posting them on youtube so we can watch some of the ridiculousness that takes place

Pretty sure you can go to youtube right this second and find plenty of ridiculousness to laugh at...

how is it even an effective way to lose weight, its temporary!! wounldnt effective mean some sort of lasting weight loss. Yea effective while you are fasting but it has no longevity. I know you guys are just playing devils advocate. The class is health psychology not so i assume by weight loss he meant healthy weight loss, since when is dehydration good for you

steve_d

Effective because the scale goes down. Weight loss doesn't have to be permanent for it to be effective. And I suppose you could also say, if you were to fast permanently, you'd lose weight permenently...how much do bones weigh?

I would guess that seeing as how this is a school course, the teacher isn't thinking about it the same way as I'm thinking about it, so he's likely a dummy. Although, if by chance he happens to be a MMA or powerlifter, then maybe he actually was talking about making weight classes...although, how likely is that?

I could also argue that for the average joe, fasting is actually not as crazy as what bodybuilders do to get ripped. Probably easier mentally to fast and lay around all day then eat 2000 calories and go for a crazy workout and over an hour of cardio. that makes more of a health psychology topic than just talking about methods to lose weight.

he is not a powerlifter or weightlifter of any kind
he should not be teaching ignorant people that fasting is effective in a health psychology class, this just give undeserved credit to stupid fasting diets

My most sincere apologies for those who drove in to class and braved walking in the deep snow. I thought I could make it out of my driveway, but i can't, so I have to cancel class. Please look carefully through the notes for lectures 5, 6, and 7, and I'll take questions on this next week, then move on to lectures 8-10.
Agaim I am very sorry.

How'd you get the message??

Kinda like what happened last year after a snow storm here, went to the cold beer and wine since there wasn't much else to do, and taped to the door was a note " store closed due to weather"... WTF, he had to drive there to put the note on the door AND the cold beer and wine is in the same complex as the grocery store which was open.

So 2 things today:

We just had our reading week. So its the first week back and I'm in stats class. We have a big paper due, 20 page analysis of a recently created measure. Everyone hands in their paper at the start of class. This guy comes in late and the prof says "you can hand it in after class", he wanted the guy to just sit down and stop disturbing the class. Guy asks "Hand what in?" Teacher starts this huge bellowing laugh a sort of "Huh Huh Huh". Whole class starts laughing now and the dude just splits. What a moron!

Second story: Midterm today. Midterm starts and this guy puts up his hand. The teacher then proceeds to ask if anyone has an extra pencil...... This bugs the shit out of me. Your job is to be a student, your job today is writing a test. Holy shit! Imagine if you showed up to a construction site and forgot your tools at home. Certain things you shouldnt forget. I bet this guy had his cell phone, but not what he really needs. Useless turd, really inspires me to see what the next generation is capaple of.

exam question

Classic test theory score is calculated given the equation X= O+E (Observed score + Error)
What indicates your score on the test?
a) X
b) Your right answers, minus your wrong answers
c) right answers divided by wrong answers
d) O/E X Pie

we did a class analysis of answer reporse

40% endorsed D a total dummy answer that involve this use of Pie, which was never metioned in class and is used with circles
1% endorsed A score is equal to X, the correct answer

I got it right and based on class size i am the only on to get it right. Is this a hard question? Me and the prof had a good laugh after class about this one.

just dont ask them anything logical. They need their instructions to be very mechanistic and lacking any use of cognitive abilities.

Is this a logics course? If not, then i dont see anything wrong with it. If u have 50 min for 50 q's are under pressure and expecting nutrition related q's, i would simply chalk this up to 'guess and move on'. The same logic applies to a logic course asking a deceptively easy question, most will over think and come to an incorrect conclusion.

RagingRandy

You can not teach logic. It is an ability\aptitude you either have or not. The longer I live and more people I meet the more evidence I see.

steve_d
21-03-2011, 02:48 PM
logic is learned over time. Increased intelligence tends to increase logic. Kind of like that Watson thing that took on jeopardy winners. Logic was used to get at the correct answer, but without the mounds of data, logic could only go so far.

the average 10 year old has far less logic than the average university student. If logic can be improved over time, then it can be indirectly taught. You can teach someone to use logic. I've taught many people how to be more logical when helping them study for exams. People have just over time learned that they can get relatively good grades without using logic, and just using memory. You just need to get them to understand how to use logic, and increase their logic with other forms of intelligence.

JacktheThriller

that was a course called tests and measurements not a nutrition course
