View Full Version : Flexibility...I have none

For now my major issue is I can not hold the bar when squatting. I use a squat machine at home but have now acquired a cage. So what is happening is when I try to grip the bar it throws my back out of alignment and puts a lot of stress on my wrists. I am suspecting I am not getting enough shoulder rotation. So I am still using the squat machine.

Does anyone have specific stretching exercises for a no-necked pliability-challenged individual such as myself?

3 way streamliner over bar reaches

split squat with a clean overhead grip

Rhomboid + posterior deltoid low trap on ball

low trap exercise on bench

I have no idea if there are videos of these, but if you can find them then they will explain everything. These should drastically help with your shoulder mobility if you can safely and properly execute them

Get some deep tissue done on your shoulders. Foam Roll and stretch / do yoga .

If you still have issues what you can do is get a SSB,Yoke bar or Cambered bar this way you will be able to squat perfectly while saving your shoulders.

Thanks for the link.

I've always had issues with my shoulders, not as bad as you it sounds as I can still squat :) but this should help prevent future stuff.

I myself messed my shoulders up doing too many improper bench presses as a young lad thus rotating shoulders towards mid chest (hahaha i know rookie mistake) and have found that shoulder dislocations every day as well as rotator cuff exercises done 2x a week are drastically improving it.....

Shoulder dislocates are awesome. Start with flexible tubing and work your way up to a solid bar.

Also, as part of this stretching maybe try teaching yourself to do squats with overhead lockouts (course you my have to start with nothing more than a broom handle)

I only started doing the Oly training in the last few years (under Scott Abel); I'm 42 and just as banged up as anybody that age. If I can nail these, so can you! :)
