Lower standards to not lead to higher competence. You think they would have learned that from how that have tried this in the school systems and failed. Lowering standards only leads to lower functionality.

I am overweight, have been for years,(6'@304lbs, was 350+) so my doctor sent me to the dietician, after meeting this lady that looked like she was in worse shape than me , and telling me to eat more bread and canada's recommended foods, i tend not to listen to them anymore , they also recommended that my daughter control her weight with diet alone , no exercise yet, because she is only 13

I had a similar experience. I was sent to a dietician by a nurse practitioner strictly based on my file as she had never seen me before. I suspect that it was due to a high BMI.

I go see this dietitian who is a rather portly woman. She asks me what I usually eat in a day. I tell her and she was shocked by the level of protein I eat. She tells me to drop my protien to almost nothing and start eating far more carbs. She states my eating habits are very unhealthy. I ask her if my blood work prompted her to say this. She says NO, the bloodwork is fine but that it will eventually catch up to me. I remind her I am in my 40's and have been eating this way for 5 years. This did not dissuade her. She goes on to tell me my BMI is way to high and I need to lose weight. I ask if she wants the weight loss in fat or muscle. She looked at me rather perplexed and I asked her if she would like to do a body fat measurement in order to help with her recommendations. She says NO, BMI is a highly effective tool and that the BF measurement was not required.

She then asks me about exercise and I tell her about the weight lifting. She goes on to tell me that that would be OK as long as it was not strenuous. She stated that strenuous exercise does more harm than good and as long as there is resistance then I am working the muscles the way they should be. I then see the logic......if you eat 20-25 grams of protein a day as suggested there is no way to exercise any other way then the way she suggested.

I ask her if we are done and she is about to say something else and I say Ya, we are done. Thanks. Bye.

BTW....good work on the weight loss. Keep it up you will get where you want to be.

LOL, wow gotta love those professionals, work is pushing health and wellness which is great but when they started with the Canada's food guide I knew this will go terrribly terribly wrong

My favorite is usually the nursing students at the universities pushing "healthy eating day" and they are all over 200lbs with tim horton breakfast sandwich wrappers in the garbage next to them

I can KINDA see their point. Hang on...follow me for a second....this is going somewhere...;)

IF you're some dude who's never been active in his life and you're half assed kinda thinking about becoming a bit more active...you look online and see that its recommended that you're active for an hour a day, that can be kinda daunting. you think "wow, that's a lot, I don't have time....etc" so, you just do nothing. IF you look online and see that it's only 2.5 hours a week, that might be a bit more manageable...thus, you get off the couch, brush off the dorito dust and go for a walk.

Having said that, there are still some major flaws in that. For one, who the HELL has EVER looked at the "recommended activity" level for anyone? If you want to get active...you go DO stuff. It's not like anyone who is active walks around with a stop watch..."oh, there's my hour....I guess I can stop playing tag now"

I love Tim Hortons breakfast sandwiches.

I like those Timmy breakfast sandwiches as well. But if you have to recommend fitness regimens to people they likely won't do anything productive until they get a health scare.
