Exercise-induced Biochemical Modifications in Muscle in Chronic Kidney Disease: Occult Acidosis as a Potential Factor Limiting the Anabolic Effect of Exercise
J Renal Nutr Volume 21, Issue 1, Pages 57-60 (January 2011) Emma L. Clapp

There is growing evidence that exercise may be beneficial in limiting or reversing problems related to chronic kidney disease (CKD); but exercise therapy has had limited success in increasing lean body mass, implying that metabolic abnormalities in muscle during CKD may limit the anabolic effectiveness of exercise. This short review summarizes evidence that exercise may result in a transient worsening of the pre-existing metabolic acidosis that occurs in these patients; a metabolic defect that may reverse the normal anabolic effects of exercise.

^^ what does that mean?

It's judicious to supplement with bicarbonate

I dont see any relevance of this study as it pertains to healthy athletes.

We can translate that to anyone.

You cannot apply results from individuals with CKD to healthy athletes that negates all legitimacy of the study.

This is not the issue, I posted this review because I found it interesting.

"This short review summarizes evidence that exercise may result in a transient worsening of the pre-existing metabolic acidosis that occurs in these patients"

This is the meat of the study...this does not occur in healthy athletes thus the "limiting growth" statement does not apply either.

I'm trying to string something logical in my brain... CKD ---> acidosis ---> lactic acid ---> performance ---> sodium bicarbonate ---> buffering ---> increased pH ---> muscles contract

Although it's not exactly new. There is research on this going back over 40 years. A quick google search reveals that increases in performance for short duration events are about 2%. Which involves taking 0.3-0.4g/kg of sodium bicarbonate or sodium citrate (for big guys it would be A LOT) 60-90 minutes prior to exercise.

Unless the OP posted this article because CKD is relevant to bodybuilding??? Regardless it's not very applicable.

I never said it was a discovery.

I didn't know that sharing articles potentially interesting for any athlete interested so little time to his health disturbed. I will not do it again.

Bye.

No need to get upset. It is interesting and I appreciate people posting articles. Just be prepared for someone to ask you to explain the relevance and defend your position because that is bound to happen.

Just be glad your thread is generating discussion.
