So my sister bought a condo and as usual she will spend more money than necessary to a simple solution. She got a quote (from this over priced contractor in my opinion).

The job is a Laminate Floor....(not real wood). Colour is Ebony Oak.
Sqaure feet of flooring to be installed is = 53
The floor know is bare concrete. We removed the old rug that was there.
The guy quoted her $4000.00 for the job and an additional $500.00 for the baseboarding. Which is the most easiest job for any of you who might be in this line of work might already know. What a prick can't even put in a baseboard for all that money too. He has to charge more?

What do you all think....overpriced, ripped off?
I say so.

Square feet of flooring to be installed is 405
not 53. Sorry all.

$10\sq. ft. installed is too much unless the flooring material is gold leaf. That click flooring goes down quick. I have done a few of these and you can do 400 sq. ft. in a day easily.

help your sister install it, she'll save a ton of money if you do the work yourself, and it's extremely easy to do

The guy told my sister the material is $810.00 for this job. So that means he's gonna make $3700.00 in labour for a day?
this is not real wood flooring...it is "Laminate" (appearance of wood)
he's got a couple of assistants working for him too...i think.
**** that

Laminate can actually be really nice, and it doesn't scratch up as easily as wood flooring

Yeah Laminate is nice but not worth the $4500 price tag.

Really depends, is the guy installing a sub floor as well? I think standard is around $4 a sq ft for installation with a subfloor, so at $4/sq for installation, then what's the laminate worth? That can very from like $1 to $10 a sq/ft depends how nice she's going (if I get your math right from the $810 that means he's charging her for like $1.20 a sq ft, and 0.80 cents a sq/ft for the subfloor?)

So $2500-3k would be the more standard price for that job, but it all depends on how expensive the laminate is on its own that she picked.

If he's charging you for a subfloor, do that yourself, its wicked easy and only takes like a day. (if he's not putting a subfloor on top of concrete then he probably doesn't know what he's doing anyways)

Should always get at least three quotes for flooring, especially if you think the price is too high.

Is $500 bucks for new baseboards? or pulling the baseboards off and repainting/adjusting the old ones? That doesn't sound bad, but he's way off on just the regular install, even home depot would be cheaper.

Just my two cents anyways.

I saw this guys house tonight it looks like Victoria Gotti's. You ashamed to walk by it.
His wife don't work either. All that money from just installing floors for a living?

The baseboards stay I believe. They are pretty new as the condo is not old. He will install a "boarding" whatever the hell that is. Corner round is what I remember it being called way back when My dad was renovating his house by some other goons.

I just checked there is NO sub flooring being installed with this. The baseboards will stay, all he is adding for the extra $500 bucks is a "trim".

So, NO sub flooring. A floating floor is being installed. What the hell is that?

I had my entire basement finished for about 10K, and that included the studs, ceiling, drywall, insulation, sink, toilet, electrical, plumbing, and 800sq. ft of laminate, plus paint, 3 doors, and all labor.

The only thing I did was paint my doors.

the 800$ for the 400 sq. ft of laminate is not that bad. I got mine on sale at rona, and it looks like hardwood - not that cheap looking laminate stuff. But 3000$ for labor? really? I paid 3500$ for the entire labor of finishing the entire basement. which took almost a month. 3000$ for a days work is a bit much.

Floating means it is not secured to the material below it. This is a standard click floor install. It does need foam between the flooring and the concrete unless the laminate comes with a foam backing already.

I just had 3/4 inch maple floor installed (about 350square feet)

Cost over 3000 and no subfloor was required. (included quarter round)

This included refinishing the maple staircase treads and landing as well.

Labour is expensive so if you are not willing to learn how to do it yourself, then suck it up and pay for it. Labour is the most expensive aspect of any trade job.

Its funny how people tend to look down on trades people thinking they are not worth X dollars because they didnt go to college. They probably work harder than anyone with a college degree.

Why would you ever just get one quote from one person... call a few other people and see what they quote it at and then go from there. Its REALLY easy for Tile/Laminate/Hardwood to look complete shit if you dont understand what your doing.

I just look down on them in general because there are so many dicks who look to rip people off when they can. Hell I installed new carpeting in my basement, I will never do it again cause it was a bitch and I will pay someone to do it before I even think of doing it myself. But I know when the guy comes to give me a quote he will purposely go higher then what he knows he can do it for hoping I dont say "well I have had other quotes for X amount of money." Other then that, I will never get into a trade because its damn hard work, just too many people out there praying on people who dont do their research.

Why does it matter where the **** he lives?

You should get over the fact that you obviously don't have a pot to piss in and that those who do, you know, maybe have some marketable skill that allows them to make a good living and just because you don't doesn't mean you should call him out because he does.

I have to wonder about you as it seems as though you're stalking the guy.

Either let your sister use him or don't but shut the **** up with your constant whining about what kind of home he lives in.

The green bushes on the mountains are: Evergreen Oak trees, their growth is controlled by the local habitat of free roaming goats from nearby farmers that munch on the shrubs thus keeping them from growing into huge trees.
Other greenery in area is: "Argan trees", "Lentisk", wild oregano e.t.c
