Dear Sir or Madame,
On behalf of Senator Day, let me assure you that he shares your concerns regarding Bill C-36, and the process under which it was studied.
On Wednesday November 24th, Senator Day attempted to pass two motions at the Senate Standing Committee on Social Affairs, which was tasked with the study of this bill. The first was to have Shawn Buckley appear as a witness; the second was to extend the committee hearings so as to further reflect on recent testimony, which the committee heard last week on Bill C-36. Both of these motions were voted down by the Conservative members on the committee.
Rest assured that Senator Day will do all he can to ensure that Bill C-36 is not passed in this seemingly haphazard manner. He strongly believes that the committee should give proper consideration to the bill, which entails hearings from all Canadians who wish to express their views on this bill. Your continued support in this endeavour would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Mike Delaney

I got this Reply:
Mr. XXXXXXX, I brought forward a motion at the committee meeting last Monday. The motion was to allow Mr. Buckley to appear before our committee. The Conservative majority voted the motion down.

I watched these videos. I must say the man is an excellent speaker.
Those videos lead me to the videos regarding Eldon Dahl and his dealings with Health Canada and the RCMP. I felt pretty outraged about the whole thing until I found an article describing how he was charged with importing large amounts of steroids. I think I understand why things happened the way they did. I found it somewhat interesting watching the video and looking at how nice his home is while he complains at times like he's living in poverty.
I have mixed feelings regarding government control of Natural Health Products and Supplements. Although I don't agree with a Bill that violates a person's basic rights and freedoms.
If you find yourself only getting information that points in one direction you should step back, think about things, and try to develop a broader understanding of what is really happening. It's like looking at a coin on a table. Unless you pick it up you'll never know what's on the other side. Something I need to exercise more of.

Vancouver, BC -- The biggest steroid smuggling case ever in Canada began when a Canada Customs agent at the Pacific Highway crossing in Surrey, B.C., grew suspicious of a seemingly innocent notation on an invoice.
In a small provincial courtroom in Surrey this week, Madam Justice Jean Lytwyn sentenced the importer of those drugs, Eldon Garth Dahl, to 18 months of house arrest and fined him and his company $350,000.
The 48-year-old businessman who lives in Langley, just outside Vancouver, could easily afford it. Over the past four years, Mr. Dahl sold more than $640,000 worth of steroids as he built his health-food wholesale company into a thriving business.
Among the steroids imported by Mr. Dahl, was androstenedione, the drug used by baseball player Mark McGwire when he set a home-run record in 1998. Androstenedione, androstenediol and prasterone, or DHEA, all of which were smuggled in by Mr. Dahl, are legally available south of the border but banned in Canada.
"The products . . . were marketed as health supplements that would increase sports performance and optimize the health of those who used them," Ms. Hyman said in a sentencing submission.
"In most cases, they were marketed as alternatives to steroids and with minimal or no warning labels as to potential dangers and side effects."
Ms. Hyman said the specific side effects include liver tumours, heart disease, sexual dysfunction, acne, immune system suppression and increased aggressive behaviour.
The Crown prosecutor also told the court that there is growing evidence that anabolic steroids can become addictive. She expressed concern about the way Mr. Dahl's company was packaging steroids as health supplements, saying people could have been misled into thinking they weren't dangerous.
In convicting Mr. Dahl on 33 counts of making false customs statements, smuggling and possession of controlled substances, Judge Lytwyn described him as "the mastermind" of a well-organized business that largely imported and sold legitimate health supplements.

seems very vague that it include dangers as well as potential danger, you can overdose on water for **** sake, polititions have no place messing with supplements when they have no idea what they are at all

By that rationale then neither should a majority of the people who consume supplements.
Ask the average joe who takes creatine why they take it, what it's for, how to use it, etc. Or ask them about protein power. Chances are you'll get a reply like: so and so at popeyes or my friend told me to take it to get big.
Just received this email this afternoon;
Canadian Citizens,
If you are receiving this letter it is because you have expressed to me your concerns about Bill C-36 through one of the several hundred e-mails I have received over the last month. As you know, on December 1st the Senate Standing Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology passed C-36. I strongly opposed the passage without hearing from adequate witnesses, so I requested a recorded vote. The Conservative majority in committee all voted to pass the Bill without amendments, and now it returns to the Senate for third reading. The Conservatives hold a similar majority in the Senate.
We have worked hard to ensure that should Bill C-36 pass, it can only do so when given proper consideration, and only after every informed voice on the matter has been heard. This has not been then case. I have also proposed many amendments, all of which were voted down by the Conservatives voting together.
Many have asked what they can do to address this situation, to which I recommend the following; continue to e-mail your Senators, voicing your concern about how this Bill is being passed. In particular, you should contact the office of those Conservative Senators who seem intent on ramming this Bill through without giving due consideration to its repercussions. They seem totally disinterested in the potential effects of this Bill.
Below you will find a list of those Senators who voted in favour of passing Bill C-36 in committee. The Senate Chamber is meant to be a chamber of independent second thought, occupied by independent minded people. Amendments in the Senate will not cause an election, and thus should happen more frequently.
We are now in debate in the Senate. I spoke on Thursday, and it will continue Monday and Tuesday. Let’s hope for the best.
Yours Truly,
Joseph A. Day LL.M., P. Eng.

BILL-36 Passed Monday night. Its going to change the industry. got this from a alberta senator a few minutes ago.
Hello, again. I just wanted to let you know that Bill C-36 passed in the Senate Monday night by a majority vote. Amendments designed to preserve the rights of Canadian citizens were defeated. You can read more about it on my blog by clicking here<http://www.albertasenator.ca/hullabaloos/?article&543>.

Nate i would have to agree with you. The average Joe probably has no idea anything smart. Thats why hard sugar candies can be marketed as FAT FREE. I don't think it is the majority of people who are getting upset about the bill. The majority of people that take supplements probably have no idea this is happening.
