Hey...looking for some feedback on this.
Deadlifting is awesome mass builder for guys and gals...anyone have any advice on ladies deadlifting (regular and straight leg) during contest prep...bulk and cutting..we do lots of both and are reconsidering as adverse with respect to waist size ....possibly giving blocky look as opposed to hourglass / X frame ..:fback

It would probably take a long time for this to happen, to a person who squats really heavy and deads heavy all the time. And for someone who is looking to increase their taper and is in that middle road they would have to be careful here too. Both require a lot of core and stabilizer muscles, and over time will develop just like any other muscle on the body.
But then again deads do not have to be performed week in and week out, nor does heavy squats. And there are other variations to the exercises too.

agreed. non issue. For guys and gals. If you have a thick waist, its because of genetics, not because of deadlifting and squatting. Just look at my wife and I. I'd actually want to add some thickness to my waist to be honest! and she's about 3 inches wide.

i get every single girl i train doing both sumo and conventional deadlifts. some have the most tiny waist lines ull ever see. I mean i personally have been deadlifting and squating for that matter for 26 years and my waist is tiny compared to most guys i compete against.

my gf has the mentality that if she squats or deadlifts her legs are gonna get huge lol, but we have this one lady in the gym squating 315 and same with deadlift, and she has a such a small waist with farily small legs, I love it :)

I love deadlifting.. and squatting! and I have chicken legs and a skinny waist.. lol
I wear a belt for both.. Im not sure of the REAL science or theory behind wearing a belt.. it just makes me feel likeI keep my posture better sort of distributes the weight evenly..
I often read and sometimes mod on an all female site.. thickening of the waist is a concern for alot of ladies.. One Pro suggested wearing a weight belt REAL tight for all excercises in the gym... like I said.. a thick waist is a non issue for me, so I wouldnt have any idea if her suggestion has any merit or not... just throwing it out there! lol

You kill me....still bustin a gut over ur comment the other day...what do chicken legs look like...thought u were a BB now...came to the dark side
So are you guys that are saying heavy squats will not make your core thicker? I find that hard to believe that you can work a muscle with heavy weight and not have size/thickness added to ones core. (especially if you are on the sauce)
Instead of just saying it's a non issue, could someone explain why its a non issue?
I mean, in my mind, maybe its a non issue if you are already a Tank, but if you are naturally slim?
I am certainly not challenging anyone's opinion here, just looking for some kind of explanation.

I can't explain why. I just go by personal experience. I have a tiny waist, and it hasn't increased at all in 10 years. I guess when I work heavy squats, the majority of the muscle groups at work would be in the legs. The back might be tight and contracted, but no more than when I laugh at a really funny joke.
Basically my thought process is that I am not moving the weight with my core. I am stabilizing it.

What precipitated this thread was we are starting contest prep for next summer so going to go through a heavy off season. Wife loves squatting and DL and does so with huge load for female...but..our real goal for this year is to X her out a bit more...widen her shoulders etc and keep waist smaller and we were looking for opinion as to the dl especially would have adverse effect on lower back / core area (thickening basically) and we would be self defeating as we work towards our goal. I thought we were OK and you all have provided some awesome and qualified feedback...now if I could only get my waist smaller...lol:bch

Steve_d's already mentioned I dl and squat heavy weight during prep and have a tiny waist...
My waist size may have increased sightly but the gains in my back, legs, and traps from heavy dl's and squats outway the tiny increase in musle in my core and for sure increase my x shape. Dead's also give women that great high butt you need in figure (IMO). I personally never train abs, I think my core gets the work it needs from heavy compound exercises.
My advice to other women is do what you like...if you like to lift heavy do it!

IIRC,Lee Labrada was of the opinion squats would thicken the waist, part of the reason he avoided them for so long. But I think genetics and Guiness would play more of a role.:)

I noticed my waist thicken after doing heavy deadlifting, 600+lbs. So my opinion is just mine and from my experiences.
Also remember, Razors woman can dead over 3 plates a side, we`re not talking sissy weight here.
So its just my opinion that if a person is fighting trying to get more of an V-taper, it might be something to be mindful of if they already are a bit thicker in the waistline to begin with.
Once again just my opinion.
