tight class. gonna be an interesting final.
by the crowd and who ever shot the vid, they think the guy with the green hair should win, but i wouldnt be so sure.
he does look good and has the best tan up there, but not sure he should be #1

I watched with the sound off. The guy w/ green hair is soft and his gyno is distractingly bad. He has a big upper body but no legs...which seems to be a trend in this video. Watch when he does a quads and abdominals pose. The smaller guy with red trunks posing beside him looks 10x better although he needs to be much darker.

He didnt even place, he needed another 5 weeks of dieting and even then wouldnt have gotten top 2-3. So much hype on this guy leading up to this show, but if he manages to bring up his legs and come in conditioned, works of posing better he'll be a force.

The guy in the red trunks got 2nd, he has an amazing physique, a classic build, I had him in 1st so did many in the crowd. He would have won the overall against the LH who won I think.

Great show though!

Word...When it comes to a physique competiton...it should be all or nothing.

I think adding another division will make judging figure/bikini and now physiue...even more confusing for the judges.

I only watched BB closely and I thought it was pretty dead on...lil controversy over the HW mens top 5 order as some thought the guy that got 2nd should have won....2 different physiques and both were good ....all other classes were good...the only figure thing I noted was as we talked about and the placing of #129...or should say non placement....

There were a number of strange choices by the judges in both the BB and the figure sections.

Who knows why they made the choices they did but im sure they had their reasons.

Hi there,

This is #129 from Figure Short at SWFC/10. I went into that show feeling I was in the best condition ever to date.....still would'nt have minded my abs being a touch leaner and my stage-jitters did affect my posing a bit.......but anyways...

Thank you for the support on this thread. Right now I am a little numb from what happened.......if I hadn't won that 'Ripped Freak' award, I would be very, very depressed after that ordeal. Very few things in life feel as good as being acknowledged and recognized for achievement, especially in competition. Very few things in life feel as frustrating as having all your hard work overlooked, or even being PENALIZED for it.

Looking at the video footage I would agree that bikini-type physiques are being rewarded in figure, at least they seemed to be in that class. The fact that there are no set judging criteria being DEMONSTRATED in Figure is making the sport seem 'wishy-washy' and I think this may be causing people to start not really taking it seriously......but then, this could just be my disappointment tinting my opinions.

I was hoping that the Bikini Division would help clarify the difference between a great phyique, and a great, athletically developed physique.......but it seems to have just made things more confusing.

I have been told that me getting the Ripped Freak award is causing controversy as well....because it "should have gone to a female bodybuilder".:rulz

As it stands, I'm questioning everything...whether or not I should do Figure anymore, maybe I should try crossing over to Bodybuilding, or that new division coming up called 'Physique'.....maybe I should streamline my look to place higher in Figure.....haven't worked it out in my head yet.

It has been comforting reading other's opinions and finding that perhaps my own, regarding my physique, is not as delusional as the competition results would elude them to being....like I said, this experience has me questioning EVERYTHING!!

So thank you for sharing your views on this, I feel a little more sane now.:D

Cheers!

WTF is going on...............

Strong message here from BCABBA and judges where figure is headed....#129 looks like she should become a huge supporter of the decision to have another division...womens physique...added and then....the top placings will come...great post above in the thread about death of womens BB...judging criteria laid out

Glen Brown.. unbelievable! First time competing at a bodybuilding show EVER! A lot of guys on the stage competed before. Glen had a few people helping but he did most of the work himself. Guys were throwing him tips here and there but he did it most of it own his with moral support from friends and family. One thing he had that most guys (not all) didn't have were LEGS!!! I think that was the main thing guys on stage were lacking.
Big Mike (Green Hair Guy) he was a beast. Coming in at 261lbs. I also feel he should have dieted for another month before stepping on stage. i think he would have been better around 250-255lbs. His Conditioning was off. He's young and still has a bright future ahead of him. I think at this point of the game he shouldn't worry so much on size and weight and focus more on symmetry and conditioning. He needs a coach who knows his stuff to give him the advice that he desperately needs. His legs also need some improvement. He's tall so he really does need a well educated coach. But i do see a bright future for him so keep your eye out for him in the future.
The HeavyWeight who came in 2nd...Jag... He was Mr.India and Mr.Asia :) He was impressive but i think his figure lacks a little bit of size. He is another guy who needs to work on his legs. They are almost there. I think next year is his year...

But i have to say... Congrats to all competitors ...it takes MUCHO BALLS to step on the stage.. so win or lose GOOD JOB AND KEEP YOUR HEAD UP!

while I understand the reasons for her not winning the category, I cannot justify the reasons a judge would have for having her last. But one thing for certain is that she stood out enough to be marked last. It's funny, but you almost have to take it as a good thing.

When judging, we're always told we're not looking for muscular, etc...so what do the judges interpret from that? anyone with muscle or too much definition get marked last. It's silly. We had a judges meeting a couple weeks back in preparation for the ottawa show, and one thing I brought up over an over was that just because they are marked down for something like that, it doesn't mean they are to be marked TOTALLY down...Its 1 weakness. So why would cellulite, old, unshapely win over someone who may have decent shape, and tone, but is just too hard, or too muscular?

It also depends on the line-up your in. In figure you never want to be the leanest, nor the most muscular. You basically can't stand out in those ways because you will not win. Since its subjective, you have to play the 'majority' rule as a competitor. If you're too lean, you'll have a couple judges having you last, and maybe a couple having you up there. if you don't stick out too much, you end up being the girl without anything distinctively flawed. Hence the winner is usually the one with the least flaws, and not the one with the most strengths.

In this case, sure, she may have been too lean for the lineup, which made her stand out. But from the video, my impressions are that there may have been ways to hide those 'flaws' (ie strengths). It wouldn't really matter at this show, but in the future, when going against similar body types, you'll need to figure out a way to stand out from them. Figure is hardly judged on what your body looks like - its judged on what you make your body look like. A girl can look like a bodybuilder yet pose in a way that is sexy and very 'figure' like.

So anyway, #129 might have a body type more in line with what you see in the top girls at nationals, the problem is getting recognized locally in order to get to that national level.

My advice to # 129 is stick with figure. she might be good at a local bodybuilding event, but would look small at a national level event as a bodybuilder. Same idea with women's physique...I'd stay away from that just because its simply bodybuilding with a new name. You'll still go against bigger girls. My hunch is eventually it will just be same as bodybuilding is now, except you have to have a pretty face. So stick to figure, just work on the stance...it looks like the knees are bent and locked inwards...which might be why it appears the waist is thicker than the hips...which really was the only flaw (if you were in a national lineup). Side stance was perfect - and you should be top3 just based on that alone. In that 2nd lineup you should easily have came 1st no matter what the judges thought negatively towards being too ripped or big...Even if you are too big (which your not) then it still doesnt matter...big doesn't lose to out of shape, skinny, or fat. but it really looks like figure is turning into bikini more and more year after year. Don't worry about your placings at this show...it really didn't make too much sense to come last no matter what justification a judge could give you.

If over-muscularity is the case, then the 1st and 2nd place in the masters before them would have had a different standing, and figures that placed 3,4 and 5 would have been the top 3.

The judging was embarrassingly all over the map for many of the classes.

This is the top 3. #4 & #5 were in between the second and third place finishers physique-wise.

Judges need to either choose one or the other, or follow the rules to the letter. Do they want muscular athletic women or more "traditional" women? How can the athletes train for something that has no consistant standards?

Its like somebody constantly moving the net during the game.

There is no logical reason why #129 would not be in the top five at the very least. Even if #129 didn't fit all the criteria and points were deducted for over- muscularity per the the written rules, there is no way she should have been insulted with last place.

\

Perhaps the judges should wait till after the event before they hit the sauce.:friday

Like i said, alot of it has to do with what your line up looks like. And more importantly, nothing can be said from a photo. its all about how you move and stand on stage. Yes, its true that alot of shows there is so many questionable calls on what the judges like ...but there are also a lot of times where bodybuilders / friends / etc don't understand why there buddy in figure placed where they did, and 9 time out of 10 they are judging their body and not stage presence.

Most bodybuilders would agree that if you look like a monkey when your flexing, and you aren't displaying it to your best, it can hurt you...well multiply this by 1000 for figure. You wouldn't think it since its justa couple of quarter turns, but its 90% based on stage presence. I've seen garbage competitors place 1st when all they have is boobs and stage presence...And I would agree with the placings...so my point is, while its true judges may not be consistent, there are other reasons that can explain placings outside of what they look like in a photo, or in the gym. same with bodybuilding. Guys look small or crappy in the gym and they explode on stage, and vice versa - same applies for figure.

So thank you for sharing your views on this, I feel a little more sane now.:D

Cheers!
Slm

Hey Slm,
Figure is a very subjective sport (trust me I understand your frustration). It is tough to know what to expect from a judging panel any given Saturday. All you can do now is hold your head high and enjoy your ripped freak award! Sounds like a fun award to win! I would never have placed you last in that line up but there are some things you need to work on to get that "wow" factor that gains the judges attention. Presentation is so, so, so important. Hair, makeup, suit selection, walking, and POSING are sometimes more important than anything else, especially in smaller shows. I understand your nerves as I have been competing since 2004 and nerves killed my performance until this year. Once I was confident onstage my placings started to change (for the better :>)).
If you like figure stick to it. Don't change what you do for a panel of judges or anybody...just keep improving that's what the sports about. We all have to compete the way we want to look. The sport is way to subjective to try to please anyone else.
Best of luck in future shows!

Physique....Don't agree with you here. BigToph (Chris Parker) is the head judge and this is not the place for him to speak about individual physiques, placings or scores. If he wants to talk in general terms with respect to the direction they went, thats up to him. BT runs a no-nonsense show and instructs his panel of judges on how they are going to assess competitors ...of course each judge has their own individual likes and dislikes and that will be reflected in the way they score a physique.

If a competitor wants personal feedback, then they contact BT and they will get a frank and honest assessment back from BT with respect to their physique...the good and the bad but thats between them....and from my experience, you will get feedback on how to improve...but this is not for open posting.

You raise a great point here Fitfanatak...and it would probably really help to clear up some of the questions and controversy after each show...NPC shows, competitors get their score card as they leave the stage after their class so they have it right in front of them...maybe Canadian organizations should consider that...there should be no secrets

[QUOTE=Big Mike (Green Hair Guy) he was a beast.

IMO I think he was as much as 20 lbs out and 2-3 months of dieting (if we are talking striated glutes and dry as a bone).

Its like he didn't even diet, just walked off the street onto stage and expected his size to rule the day.

Well not here buddy! if this was the NPC than yeah it might have worked :).

His color was pretty good though.

really? do i have to dig up posts of him actually doing this?
I wasnt bashing chris in anyway by saying this either. but i have seen him come on this site, cjm and a few others and respond to peoples questions!

but like u so elagantly put in the second paragraph of your post, any competitor that wants more info about why he/she placed where they did should directly email him. i believe his email is on the bcabba site.

Exactly...I have seen him come on as well but not to critique a competitors physique...like I stated, talk in general terms with respect to the direction the judging is going or went but it's a no win situation for him to come and debate over what is done..no judge should do that. He can't win and if people are on any board griping about it, it usually is because it was an unpopular decision like the one in this situation.

#129 posted a very truthful and tactful message that pretty much lays out her feelings.

Again as we both stated, he will give a very frank critique with valuable feedback to the competitor if they contact him directly.....

You're right.. I think he was dependent on his size a lil too much.. A lot of Bodybuilders go threw it... it's a learning experience ...and hopefully he does learn from it, from which i think he did. I have feeling next year he will get the proper coaching he needs...
