Have you always been an active person - did you play sports in your youth?
I've played sports my whole life, high school basketball, track, tennis. I excelled in Track and Field winning a provincial junior championship in Triple Jump before destroying an ankle forcing an early retirement. This was good though as it allowed me more time to pursue bodybuilding.
What made you get into bodybuilding competitions?
I was hooked ever since i picked up my first bodybuilding magazine when i was 10 years old. I was in such awe that someone could develop their bodies to such an extent. From that point on i was confident that one day I'd step on stage. My first exposure to bodybuilding training however was with my Dad in the basement of our house at the age of 7. We followed a Weider routine with our plastic sand filled plates. I loved the sport even then.
Having been a bodybuilder for many years, what advice can you give to a young competitor just getting into the sport?
Save yourself the trail and error by hiring a good coach to work with you to achieve your potential. Don't underestimate the importance your nutrition plays when it comes to results. Don't get sucked into buying every kind of nutritional supplement out there. Surround yourself with a support network of like minded individuals who are willing to lift you up, not drag you down.
How has the sport impacted your life? (your job, social life, mind - work opportunities )
I've been in the fitness industry for 17 years now. I've worked as a trainer and in fitness club management for most of those years. I even owned my own gym for a couple of years before the recession hit. My friends are mostly all bodybuilders and the majority of my daily social interaction does revolve around the gym. I guess i live and breath bodybuilding 24/7.
How was your experience at the CBBF Nationals this year?
Competing in the CBBF Nationals was a lifelong dream come true. It was a surreal moment finally stepping on the big stage and to win was icing on the cake. It was also really nice knowing and speaking to other CBB members there as well. Seeing the level of development on all the competitors really opened my eyes this year and has motivated me to take things more seriously in order to improve.
You are the head of Canadian Muscle Team. What is it about?
The Canadian Muscle Team is my online coaching business. I help individuals transform their physiques into the best they can be. It's now taken on a life of it's own as many of my clients are now friends with each other and we oftentimes get together whether to watch bodybuilding shows or share a meal or hit the gym. The comradarie and support we all give each other is what makes us a team and not just individuals though.
Favourite foods for dieting? For cheating?
My favourite food when i diet is my first meal of the day - an egg white omelet and oats with cinnamon and splenda. Cheating - Pie and cheesecake
Are there any sports supplements that you cannot live without?
A good whey protein, casein protein and creatine monohydrate have been the staples for years.
Are you sponsored by a company? If so, who?
TrueSupplements.com has supported me very generously the last year. Much thanks to TS without which i wouldn't be where i am now.
Having been an active member on various bodybuilding and fitness forums for many years, what do you find positive about interacting with other members on them and what do you find negative?
I enjoy helping people so being active on the forums is like second nature to me. I like the sense of community and the friendships. As far as negatives...people who don't want to read anything prior to asking for help and "know it all gear gurus" who give out bad info.
What is a typical day for you when prepping for a show?
My day always start at 7:30am got to get the kids fed and ready and off to school. After that i prep my own meals for the day (typically 6). The rest of the day is spent answering emails and meeting with clients. Gym time is 6:30pm to 8:30pm. I'm home in time to get the kids to sleep and spend time relaxing with my wife. In bed by 10:30pm. Not much changes from offseason to precontest except the diet is more strict and cardio is added.
What do you find the most difficult about this sport?
The lack of mainstream general exposure. We work harder than almost any athlete in any sport yet we get less tv time than poker on espn!
When will we next see you on stage?
I plan on competing at the 2011 Canadian Nationals in Quebec.
