Calcium D-glucarate is a natural substance used to inhibit an enzyme in certain bacteria that reside in the gut - beta-glucuronidase. One of the key ways in which the body gets rid of hormones like estrogen is via attaching glucuronic acid to the hormone in the liver and then excreting this complex in the bile. Beta-glucuronidase is a bacterial enzyme that uncouples (breaks) the bond between excreted hormone and glucuronic acid. When beta-glucuronidase breaks the bond, the freed hormone is available to be reabsorbed back into the body instead of being excreted. The preliminary results are quite encouraging. The recommended daily dosage for prevention is 200 to 400 mg. Higher dosages (i.e., 400 to 1,200 mg) may be necessary for individuals with existing breast cancer.
