So i'm watching tv and see this class action lawsuit commercial and talk about a recall in 09 for accutane.
WTF...Crohns disease, ulcerative colitis, irritable bowl syndrom.
I never knew this when i took it last year for a few months. I wonder how many others here are also in the dark concerning this problem?

I think your prone to those types of disease or your not... you should not blame it on accutane. Your doctor should tell you there is quite the risks when taking such medication.

I know a friend who got gyno surgery covered, doctor looked over his prescription history and Accutane was on it, because of that the surgery was fully covered for Accutane being the culprit....or so they accused.

accutane, like many drugs is extremely strong. i've used it and was extremely please at how it helped me. having said that, a lot of people use it without knowing it is a very harsh and strong drug. everything has a pos and negative to it, but to simple blame everything on 'tane is a bit silly

There is so much literature about how scientists/doctors do not know the cause of those diseases (btw IBS isn't a disease, and most of the time can be controlled with a healthy well balanced diet to the point that it doesn't seem like it exists). With that being said I have read that there is a trend that people with one of those diseases are deficient in vitamin K. Antibotics cause people to be deficient in vitamin K. Too bad you cannot get vitamin K in Canada except through green veggies. I have heard that the supplement "greens" works well for this, but who knows. I have also read on medication inserts for some strong antibotics (I think keflex, but not sure) that those diseases are a side effect.
Personally, I think that if you ever hit up antibotics you should take probiotics afterwards in very large doses.

Can you be a little less clueless yourself?
A doctor can only be as good as what you tell him. A doctor asks:
1. did you have pubertal gyno
2. use steroids
and if you answer no to both, the most logical conclusion is previous drugs. Men dont' just randomly grow boobs.

Come on man you don't really believe accutane caused man titties right? I know I didn't just hear this from johnnyO lol. The doc was just throwing your friend a bone so the surgery would be covered.
Accutane does not cause gyno.Period.

If this doc really thinks accutane caused gyno, he needs to go back to med school. Or stick to cutting moles off. Do you know how accutane works? Simply put, it dries out your sebum glands. That's it. Stops oil production. It does not affect you hormonally, therefore cannot cause gyno. Any quack should be able to figure this out.
Let's try and use logic here folks.

Are you serious? Simply stops oil production? Really? Ahaha, I wish it wasn't 12pm so I could relish this juicy LOL moment.
A physician can only work with what you give him. He can't ****ing read through a person and magically come up with shit. If you come up and say that you never did steroids and you never had pubertal gyno, he has to come up with some sort of explanation as to how a man grew tits.
possible explanations:
1. He randomly grew tits. Yeah because men do this all the time...
2. Or it was due to one of the most toxic medications known to humankind with a laundry list of contraindications and noted adverse affects
Sounds like a smart Doc to me.

Yes I said "simply" cause I'm not going to type out an entire explanation of how it works.Take your time relishing that comment. No rush.

And acctuane is the answer? Of all the printed literature on accutane, there is not one single claim that it causes gyno with anyone else, yet this guy had some magic reaction to it and got gyno.
possible explanations:
1. He randomly grew tits. Yeah because men do this all the time...
2. Or it was due to one of the most toxic medications known to humankind with a laundry list of contraindications and noted adverse affects
Or it was from the steriods like we already know, the guy should man up and admit it, and stop confusing the doctor and stop wasting his time, and blaming it on some other drug. How bout that? Oh no wait, that makes sense.

The doctor isn't told that the patient is using steroids so he is working with what he has at his disposal. I don't think you read/understood that part.

I understood perfectly fine. I understand the doctor doesn't know he was using steriods. But "we" as in us on this board know differently. All I'm saying is it's stupid and dangerous for this doctor to be randomly accusing drugs of causing something. That tells me he has no clue what he's talking about and he's just throwing out guesses, and it frustrates me when doctors do this. If he doesn't know the answer, he shouldn't be opening his mouth. This is exactly how misinformation starts. Now there is documentation out there of accutane causing gyno, which is false..............but I can't blame the doc 100%, because the patient is lying about his drug use, which is causing the doc to grab at thin air cause he can't find a logical reason for the gyno. Basically it's just a big ****ing mess. They are both in the wrong.
Something else I need to add. When a guy walks in his office at a ripped 250lbs(or whatever he weighs), has acne and gyno, shouldn't a bell go off in his head.
Show me where I said it did
You didn't. It sounded like you agreed with the doc in your post. If not, my mistake.
But getting back on topic, I can see how accutane would cause crohns. It does dry out some people's rectal tissue, so it definitely has an effect on bowels and the intestinal track.

You are absolutely correct, you can't blame the doctor. But you did. That's my entire point and I am sick of it. It's too ****ing common to blame the doc, on this board for just about everything.
He won' give me HRT - what a ****ing asshole
He isn't giving me the high MG finaesteride which I dont' plan to use for prostate, but rather for hair loss - what a ****ing clueless, asshole.
These guys go to school for half their life, pay a fortune for education costs and are expected to know every ****ing detail about everything and when they don't, they get treated like shit. not ****ing fair, lets show some respect.
Medicine at times, is part educated-guesses and part art. The doc will never know what caused the gyno for sure, but accutane it a reasonable guess and really the only valid guess (remember, men don't grow boobs randomly). The art part, comes from comforting the patient. How do you think the patient would feel if the doc said:
"Sorry, had no idea what caused it. It's probably random, and it could happen again, randomly. Good luck, enjoy your life!"

Here's what I would want the doctor to say: "Nothing in your history can explain why you developed gyno, and I honestly don't know the answer. So I am going to refer you to a collegue of mine who might be able to get you some answers."
OR
option 2:
"I'm going to send you for bloodwork and see what we can find." And when the result come back with test and estro levels through the roof, well......
The problem is doctors are to proud and big headed to admit they don't know something. And they hate being second guessed. Next time you see you physican tell him you went for a second and third opinion. I'll bet my next paycheck he gets pissed off.
Lets just agree to disagree cause nothing you tell me is going to change my mind what the doc did was still irresponsible and unprofessional(in my mind). And chances are I'm not changing your mind.
And I'm not hating on docs for petty B.S like 'he didn't perscribe me test.' I'm hating on docs because I've seen it time and time again when their 'guesses' have resulted in close family being maimed. So yes I have adequate negative feelings toward doctors. Particularly, ones that guess at a diagnoses. When your in a profession where your decisions have serious consequences, you better be goddamn sure of your diagnoses. If not, send them for a referrel. You aren't flipping burgers at mcdonalds. Now obviously this case isn't as serious as someone being maimed, but anytime I hear of doctors doing this, it strikes a nerve with me.

One of the founding ethical values in Canada's healthcare act is justice. It concerns with how resources are allocated and who gets what treatment. Not everyone is privileged to get blood tests and every imaginable treatment for everything, or our system would get so bogged down you wouldn't be able to see a doctor for an eternity.
I won't argue anymore. I think I made my point. People, especially here, are incredibly disrespectful to physicians and more often then not it is very unwarranted. Sometimes physicians do things for which motives aren't very apparent, but most people are too afraid to ask and it goes unresolved. Trust me, that physician would love to order test after test because he will get paid more for each and every action.
