it doesn't have to be super high in protein (~15g is ok), just reasonably health and not laced in sugar. Just looking for something to snack on between meals.

are cliff bars horrible?

Depends on your definition of healthy.
Would you rather have all natural ingredients and flavors that are high in sugar, but its natural. Or would you rather have something with a list of ingredients as long as your arm including lots of artificial sweeteners and sugar alcohols, but with a more favorable nutritional label?

My favorite nutritional label wise are the EAS myoplex lite bars from costco. Only 15g protein, but they are only 190calories and taste great. Just a nice little snack. Don't remember the exact price but It's definitely under $20 for a case.

For all natural non processed ingredients, Larabars. They sell them at loblaws and some small "health" stores. The main base of the bar is dates, then they have a couple other ingredients (most kinds have only ~4 ingredients), and they taste amazing. The apple pie ones are probably my favorite, but they are all good. Only problem with them is they don't have much protein, and the dates are primarily sugar.

Defiantly EAS if you’re looking for a snack as its not that high in Calories, personally I like the Carb Control version instead of the lite.

But if you’re looking for meal replacement you got to try Supreme as they are the best there is when it comes to taste and good ingredients. They also have the Carb conscious type of bar.

What are the costco bars made out of? I guess my perfect bar would be something made mostly out of oatmeal/whey/some sort of flavoring that isn't pure sugar.

How much protein on the lara bars? That almost sounds like what a cliff bar is.

The EAS ones are the standard arm length list of stuff you can't pronounce lol

I wanted this too but never was able to find it so I made my own. If you mix the right amount of protein powder, oats and apple sauce (its a good sweet low cal binder) it forms a consistency that can sort of be molded into a bar. Add stuff like nuts, coconut, dried fruit etc for flavor and to make the macro's you want and you just made your own.

The big problem with these is they don't last like the store bought ones and they need to stay refrigerated (probably ok for a few hours but I wouldn't leave it in a hot car all day..... remember what happened to that shaker bottle??)

There isn't much, 4g in the apple pie ones. They really take minimalist ingredients to the extreme though, This is all thats in the apple pie flavor.
Dates, Almonds, Unsweetened Apples, Walnuts, Raisins, Cinnamon.
I used to have to eat them with a shake though because of the piss poor protein content.

BTW, cliff bars taste amazing. I bought a case of them from costco once, the chocolate chip ones taste like half cooked chocolate chip cookies.

Hmm yeah 4g is too low. I could just take oatmeal bars if I wanted that. The cliff bars seem to have around 10-12g with some nuts but I'm afraid its mostly sugar. I can taste some dates/raisins in there though.

I used to make my own bars with oats/pbutter/whey but that sucked. It was way too soggy, you pretty much had to keep in the fridge/freezer and then promptly eat it after you take it out of the fridge.

Thanks for the link but that's a tad on the high side. 3$/bar when I buy 12? May as well buy commercial, good, high protein bars then...

Every store bought bar I've ever bought that tasted good was pretty crappy in terms of ingredients. The home made option seems like the best best. Another alternative is to accept that they are all crappy then go with either snickers or an O'Henry and enjoy :)

The VPX bars are not 'chocolate bar clones' They aren't the best tasting because of that, but i highly recomend them.
The Labrada bars, that you heat in the microwave for 10 secs, are pretty dam good.

VPX zero impact bars

21g fat
42g carbs
30g protein

with 40% of the calories from fat that doesnt look too promising to me

good fats though!

don't be so calorie focused... its all about what kind of calories they are... about keeping insulin sensitive.

someone just gave me a bar called "iso bar" i believe. the nutritional profile isnt amazing (7g fat and some natural sugars) but the ingredients are all natural (oats, isolate, peanut butter, flax, honey etc) and they taste friggin amazing

its perhaps cause ive been dieting though and it was a pre cheat meal kickoff lol

generally speaking my thoughts on protein bars is that you are better off having your fav chocolate bar and a scoop or 2 of protein in a shaker cup for the same benefit

edit: here is the iso bar

In a word...bars are shit....they have no place in a BB diet period....unles they are home made with whey protein and other natural ingredients. If you need a snack have a protein shake and some almonds or cashews.

I like this!!

I use bars the odd time in case of food emergency! forgot my lunch in the microwave at work once.. was on the bus 6 hours.. stopped at 711, got a bar and a litre of water... I feel it was a decent choice lol...

I also got stranded in a storm once and was stuck 2 hours overtime... got a mamma burger from A and W and just ate the patty!

the bar left me feeling guilty

they cost the same.

if you get hungry at a certain time and NEED a bar.. re-examine your diet and when you are eating!.. if you do it because you like chocolate bars.. break the habit!

In a pinch yes they are better than the alternative street meat...but that really happens once in awhile...hopefully we are better organized and have food prepared and packed before hand...thats what it takes.
Make some natural bars at home and bring them to work ans stick them in the freezer just in case.
