I just started using Vibram five fingers for squats - love them. Same for deadlift, however I am injured and haven't really been able to use them for heavy deadds, but I can tell I will like it.

Chuck Taylor's are the best bang for your buck in terms of a great weightlifting shoe that is inexpensive. If you get really serious you can spend 100's of dollars on squat shoes and they will be better but probably not worth it for most people. I think with the squat you should wear shoes because you need the support. With deadlifts you want to be as close to the ground as possible so the vibram five fingers like Steve said, or ballet slippers or barefoot.

They work too. Tend to cost more than chucks though. Some people like skateboarding shoes, it comes down to personal preference. I just mentioned Chucks because they are a safe and relatively inexpensive choice.

Chucks!

Hey, I'm thinking about Raw Powerlifting...probably sometime next year. I got talking to a guy yesterday. Turns out there are something like 4 national and 2 world champion powerlifters that train at my gym.Apparently there are a bunch of meets in Ontario. I'm going to shoot for a 1300 total at 200lbs BW.

Don't mind me...carry on with the discussion.

That's wicked and a great total to shoot for. The best thing to do is get in on a meet asap and gets the first meet gidders out of the way.

I've got oly shoes and quite like them. Not optimal for deadlift but for squats and powercleans they're pretty nice.

Did you buy them in Ottawa or order them online? I really would like to try some ever since I saw that pic of Ben Pak and Frankhouser, Long... lol

I Squat in Chucks and Deadlift barefoot.

Ever since I started wearing chucks for Squatting I want to wear them all the time, they feel more comfortable then any other show once you get used to it.

They allow other gay guys to know you are available.

LOL. Maybe if we saw Steve putting up big numbers wearing them...but the majority of guys wearing these things are squatting 2 plates/side or less.

Are you calling Ben Pakulski gay?

It's not my fault, someone should let Ben know he's gay.

the only ones that fit in the store (MEC) were women sizes. But my feet are real wide, so after wearing them 10 minutes I realized I would be bringing them back. Ended up buying them direct from the website.

Perhaps I'll get a video of some serious squats with my vibram's on...but if Ben can't do it with 5-6 plates a side, I dunno how seeing my sub 200 pound ass with 3-4 plates a side will help too much! lol.

Deadlifts barefoot here, all other work in Chucks. If I *had* to wear some sort of shoe (commercial gym rules or something) I'd probably wear a pair of those neoprene water socks or whatever they're called - look like a ballet slipper sort of with a rubber bottom.

I may get flamed for this one but i hate wearing no shoes while squatting or lifting in any manor. Especially squatting a like a pair of boots with good support for the ankles and a nice firm bases to drive off of. I wear a pair of Terra safety shoe low tops with a plate in the bottom, steel toe, reinforced heel, special HD insoles from the orthopedic surg. Since i started wearing the boots i feel on squats, leg presses, lunges, my legs do all the work and i dont have to fight my shoes that are getting all squished and messed up.

+1

Barefeet is by far my favorite for both lifts. There is nothing as stable as spreading your feet out right on the floor and pushing IMO, but my current gym prefers I wear shoes.
In order of favorites...
1.Barefoot
2.Vibram five fingers
3. Sqats;Oly lifting shoes
3.deads;thin flat sole shoes like chuck taylors
4. squats; thin flat sole shoes like chuck taylors
4:deads; Oly lifting shoes

Raised heel's on the oly lifting shoes don't help out with deads.
