Hopefully someone here might know what Im dealing with.

My aftermarket tail light has been butchered by whoever wired it before I bought it. My buddy looked at it and ended up removing a bunch of unneccessary splices to try and clean it up a bit in the attempt to attach my new much better tail light.

Ever since he cleaned up the wiring my fuse for the guages in the display keeps shorting out. Ive replaced it 3 times now and it continues to just blow at random times. The bike runs fine but I lose my speedometer and tach as soon as the fuse goes.

Anyone know what Im dealing with here? Why is this happenning?

yea your dreaded previous owner has somehow managed to screw up the common ground for your brake. It runs into your front brake lever trip switch and is also running into your gauages so the turn signals will indicate in your cluster. If you trace up the ground wire up to the brake switch, you should find it has been stripped somewhere and is getting power through the ground. IME its usually between the seat and the light.

A temp fix is electrical tape to cover up the break in the wire insulation. The proper way is to cut and splice the wire, and shrink wrap it. Don't forget to put the shrink wrap on first, slide it down the wire a bit before splicing and soldering. Then when the splice has cooled, slide up the shrink wrap over the splice, and heat it until it shrinks and seals the splice.
