Saturday and Sundays i work out at a publiuc gym... city run even... Its a nice facility with a million philipino old men and not too many heavy lifters. I'm a friendly gal.. and most everyone smiles and says Hi and asks how my prep is going,, it's a good environment.
Today, I was in significantly later than usual (car broke, had to bike accross the city to pick it up... anyway...)there was this "new guy" which means guy I havent seen before in there... he was a Grunter, and a screamer, and a weight smasher-downer, and a "Im using that, i'm using that too, no I'm using that also" kinda guy (seriously he had a pile of weights two benches and the calf raise all "in use" at the same time...
well.. buddy had the EZ bar with quarters on there and was doing these SUPER FAST hip swinging bicep curls and sounding like he was in hour 26 of birthing twins...
so he finishes his set and goes to the calf machine and I go grab the EZ bar, and he's like "NoNoNo, I'm still using that" and I'm like "that's ok, I'll just work in my sets with you".. AND I CURLED HIS QUARTERS!!! HAHA.. (all nice and quiet, full range of motion, slow and concentrated!)
he decided to go to cables instead!! :)

awesome!
When I started working out, many years ago, I started out by benching the bar plus 25's. Was going really well until a 55 year old woman gear up next to me and started doing the same. I went on to cable flys.

I had the opposite happen to me this morning. I go round up the plates for my warmup sets on the bench. Put them down beside the bench. Get under and start my first set. I look up and there's a 50+ year old well groomed white guy taking my plates. I stop and say hang on I'm using those.
He then proceeds to pretend he's 16 with an attitude like he wants to fight me. Maybe 175 with a roll of quarter in his pockets and a couple of inches of reach on me. I told him he should up his dose of valium but I really wanted to tell him he had about one shot then when it was my turn I would throw him on the ground and hit him for 2 or 3 minutes till my I was too tired to keep hitting.
The only thing I can figure is that he was a cop with a nagging wife. The whole teenage aggressive attitude caught me completely by surprise. There are some really rude people in the world.

Haha nice one.
I had a similar experience with me on the other end of it but not being an equipment hog. I was at the local YMCA last summer doing bb curls with the 70lb pre-weighted ez-curl bars. I was doing the higher end of my 15 reps with a little swing and after my second set this woman asks if she can use it for a set. Of course I say sure, so she picks it up and walks to her area, then bangs out 8 with 100% strict form and no hint of swing.
After my next set I was done with it so I tell her I'm done and ask if she wants it shes like "no, that was just my warm up" :puff

By far the biggest female lifter I've ever seen was in Kingston. I thought it was a big guy until I noticed the ponytail.
You guys are nicer than me...I've only had one really bad experience with what I would call an "extreme" grunter. I just yelled at the guy and told him to shut up. Almost got into a fight which I kinda regret not doing but actions have consequences.

Situations like this are why earphones are so awesome! If theres a dumbass doing a 'circuit' workout or whatever I just pop the earphones in; grab the equiptment I want and pretend like I just dont hear or see them until my set is done, then get up and walk to the fountain.
The best part is that the same jackass using 15 pieces of equiptment without ever wiping any of them off ..... sure gets might pissed off as soon a they get inconveinced for 1 or 2 min.
My opinion is that the only peice of equiptment you have are right too is the piece you are activly using. If you arent using it right now I have EVERY right to use it.

This being winnipeg there's a good chance we even know the difference between a philipina and a philipino.

I do the same thing to guys who spend half of their workout talking to the phone.

They allow cell phones?
They allow cell phones?
Unfortunately yes.
Working out without a towel is also very common in my gym. What a nice surprise to sit down in a pool of someone else sweat.
Do I need to say I'm looking for a new gym? lol

At my home gym a lot of the young guys don't have a clue about courtesy, and even though they see spray bottles and paper towels to clean off the gear, they don't. I guess they figure the desk girl will follow behind them and wipe it up.

They have signs all over one of the local YMCA's saying because of video based technology and privacy you cannot have cell phones etc in the gym. I actually had the pleasure of watching them tell someone who was chatting on their phone that they had to put it away.... the girl just left haha

I hate this train of thought. I clean none of my machines, if others wish to use it without my germs, they may clean it. If i wish to use a clean machine, I will clean it myself instead of trusting some club rule to enforce the sanity manner of a machine.
ever seen how someone just following club rules cleans the machine?

don't get me wrong I preclean the machine but damnit leaving a sweat stain is just ignorant. Even if it is just grabbing a papertowel and drying it. I don't think I should have to clean up after your lazy ass.

There is alot of coloful characters/idiots at gyms. Guys dressed inappropriate (jeans with sneakers, wearing sunglasses etc) to "grunters' and what not. The list goes on.
Last week at my home gym, this guy bring his 5 year old kid in the weight area. The kid might have been really hyper cause once his father let go of his hand, the kid took running and started to grab things. Luckly I was doing seated calf raises, but on guy was benching and the kid grabbed the bar and dude almost lost balance. He then jumped on the flat bench Hammer Strength while being in used!(WTF!) After about 2 minutes the dad grabbed the kid and left.
Man, if I was the guy benching, I would have yelled at the punk bitch of a father. It was dangerous and negligent to the kid and other gym members on his behalf for allowing his son to run loose like that. To boot, he was dressed in slacks and a polo! He was not there to workout but to visit his friend!?

Are you serious? Thats the most dangerous negligent thing I have ever heard of. I can't even imagine what made the staff think it was ok to let him in there. That guy should have had his membership revoked on the spot. Can you imagine how easily that kid could have been killed if he grabbed on to the wrong bar and it fell on him?
