View Full Version : Motorcycling with your ipod
Does anyone do this? It seems like it would be cool, but I cant figure out hot to get my helmet on without knocking my ear buds out.
For those who think this is an unsafe practice: FYI
With a high quality helmet on there is very little if ANY traffic noise that can be heard through the helmet that supersedes the sound of my after market pipe. I cant hear any passing or oncoming traffic at all unless they are leaning on the horn right near me.
I never did it because i couldnt get the buds in, plus you have to blast it just to hear anything (over the traffic noise). I always rode with earplugs, its the only way i could keep sane. As for traffic noise, i dont know ANY rider who thinks lids block the noise, they simply dont. its very draining hearing traffic noise and/or your own pipe/engine.
I wish i could find buds that block out the traffic noise as well as plugs, but they just dont exist as plugs can go much deeper and farther in the canal than any buds.
But alas my riding days are over : / I now take the money I save from riding and put it towards my grocery bills lol.
ipod ear bugs suck, your best bet is to get a quality set that stays in your ears better

That must be a fancy helmet. I could always hear traffic with my helmet on.

I wear ear plugs made for industrial noise. You can hear things but the droning is cut down, as well as most noises over 80 some odd Db.

I've done it, it's fun but I wouldn't recommend it. Even though your helmet muffles sounds as does your aftermarket pipe, you can still hear bits of traffic and more importantly your bike. I found the sound of the bike's engine kept me more in tune to what was going on. I knew roughly what RPM range I was in at all times without having to glance at the tach. It keeps you in tune to whats going on with your bike and keeps you focused on the road. By drowning all that out with music you lose auditory perception which ends up being distracting. It's fun to have music blaring in your ears while you ride but I just didn't feel as focused with it playing.

i've done it lots. worst part is my pipe drowns out the music.
there is a product (probably several) on the market specifically made for motorcyclists.
I don't remember what its called, or who makes it but if you search around for it you'll find it.

i've been stopped a bunch of times this summer by VPD. Seems they think every sportsbike rider is riding without a motorcycle license. It's annoying as hell but I'm sure they'd love to give me a ticket for something like riding with ear buds in one of these times so definitely not gonna do it around time. As for long rides I'm in the "I need to hear my bike" camp
Im not using the ipod headphones, I have a decent pair of "skull candy" ones that sit deeper into my ears.
I dunno what you guys are talking about, I dont know how you can hear any traffic over the sound of wind whipping past you and the sound of your pipe. I have a shark helmet thats fibreglass, carbon fibre, and kevlar. Its super light which is amazing and it drowns out most of the noise as more expensive helmets tend to do.
Ive seen the helmet speakers you can buy but Id rather not if I can avoid it. I will just try harder to fit it on I guess.
Thanks for the tips though.
PS. On a totally unrelated note: I have been downing full cartons of egg whites as late night meals and my farts are literally nauseating. I went away for a wkd with 12 of my buddies and I had them almost puking it was so rank. Had someone actually puked it would have given me legendary status.....

Noise cancelling ear buds is the way to go. You don't have to turn your iPod up all the way and it blocks noise, hence the name. I wear a skully underneath my helmet. Sometimes I'll pull it down low enough to cover my ears which holds them in place.
