If you want to know what you’re eating when you choose some of Canada’s most popular hamburgers, we can answer most of your questions.
We looked at the McDonald’s Big Mac, the Burger King’s Whopper, Wendy's Baconator, the Hero Burger, Harvey's Angus Burger, and A&W's Teen Burger.
McDonald's has been serving its Big Mac for more than 40 years. The 209-gram serving still has its lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions and special sauce, and weighs in at 550 calories. If you hold the cheese, you can shave it down to 480 calories. The Big Mac has 232 calories from fat and 1,020 milligrams of sodium.
Burger King’s Whopper is a 290g serving of beef, tomato, lettuce, pickle, onion, ketchup and mayo on a sesame seed bun. It packs 670 calories, or 760 calories if you order the Whopper with cheese. It contains 40g of fat. Sodium content in a Whopper is 910mg.
Wendy's Baconator Single is a 181g sandwich made from a beef patty, processed cheese and Applewood smoked bacon. If you add honey mustard sauce, dill pickles, yellow onion, tomatoes and lettuce, the calorie count will be 580, with 280 of those calories from fat. A fully loaded Baconator packs 14g of saturated fat and 1,370mg of sodium.
Hero Burgers are currently only available in the Greater Toronto Area. The Hero 4-ounce burger has 302 calories, of which 208 calories come from fat. The saturated fat comes out at 11g and sodium around 398mg. The information supplied for the Hero 4 oz. burger is for a plain burger with no toppings.
Harvey's has locations in all provinces except Saskatchewan. The 243g Harvey's Angus Burger comes with tomato, lettuce, pickles and onion, and will supply you with 719 calories. If you hold the bacon and cheese, the burger is 560 calories. It has 35g of combined fats. The sodium level for this burger is 1,390 mg.
