How do I know if my rotator cuff is injured? Is there a certain motion or movement that can tell me if it is that?

Thanks!

I have an assessment in a few days. It has been a month since and it has already improved a bit.

If you get sharp pain in the delt area when you move it around.I have it from time to time,but its from work very repetitive stuff.I like to go get massages to help speed up the healing.

I'm no doctor but an xray is needed to diagnose these problems right? Sorry to hear that Boost. Keep us updated.

Signs and symptoms of a rotator cuff injury may include:

* Pain and tenderness in your shoulder, especially when reaching overhead, reaching behind your back, lifting, pulling or sleeping on the affected side
* Shoulder weakness
* Loss of shoulder range of motion
* Inclination to keep your shoulder inactive

The most common symptom is pain. You may experience it when you reach up to comb your hair, bend your arm back to put on a jacket or carry something heavy. Lying or sleeping on the affected shoulder also can be painful. If you have a severe injury, such as a large tear, you may experience continuous pain and muscle weakness.

If your injury appears to be severe or your doctor can't determine the cause of your pain through physical examination, he or she may recommend diagnostic imaging tests to better delineate your shoulder joint, muscles and tendons. These may include:

* X-rays
* A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan
* An ultrasound scan
* An arthrogram, a special type of X-ray in which dye is injected into the shoulder joint before the X-ray is taken to enhance the image of the joint

Can you use forceful deccelration? ex, shadow boxing. If painful that would porbably indicate an injury to an external rotator.

Rotators are 4 muscles btw.

So far, I found the only thing that would touch my rotator injury was GH and rotator exercises...bench DB flyes from the elbow, laying rotator raises, and sitting with thumbs down light DB front raises.......many thanks to the BBer that helped me with those ;)

Oh, and the GH.....thank you GH, very much LOL

man too many ppl trying to play internet docs here...

first off there are 4 seperate muscles that make up your rotor:

1)superspinatus (most commonly injured)
2) Infraspinatus
3) Teres Major
4) Subscapularis

assuming its superspinatus u have injured the first 10 degress or so of a lateral will hurt, front raises, external rotation, and military press.

Superspinatus and infraspinatus are commonly misdiagnosed for eachother as there insertions and orgins are very similar.

my advice ... stop lookign for interenet answers and see a qualified doc.... sport med doc is possible.

if it has been hurting more that 4wks and you have been laying off physical activity with it push the doc for a ultrasound or MRI

and do nto listen to hoopla abotu drugs saving your injury...thats pure crap!

find a doc that knows his shit and has ART certifications. these might include Chiros, physios, RMTS, physiologist, kinesiologists.

personally I have had alot of rotor issues and my chiros ART has been the only think that helps

ART all the way. To asess your shoulder on a strength coach side I would have to visually see you. If you cant perform a external rotation for 12 reps with 10% of your bdy weight your a time bomb waiting to explode. Go see the ART or OSteopath then consider a proper strength and structual balance asessment. In the mean time you may be ok with overhead movements if you use a neutral grip, which is easier on the humeral head. Do you have numbing in your fingers? your medial nerve could be impinged. Try to give more info on what your experiencing but still go and see a practioner mentioned above

It IS my rotator cuff. It's the back bottom area. With my elbow parallel to my shoulder, it hurts to rotate my hand downwards.

He said I should wait a week or two to start doing exercises for it. He said it is probably not tendonitis; it's probably just a strain.

It's still a pain in the ass though. I want it to be better now! :(

Ok try this. Lie on the floor and lean into the floor with your body so the chest is leaned towards the floor. Keep elbow 90 degrees and tight against your side between your hip and shoulder. Make sure the entire time your chest stays open and the shoulder doesnt round forward at all and the elbow remains fixed. Dont let your wrist cock backwards. Now perform external rotation. Do 2 sets of 25 reps with 3lbs over the next 5 days. Then do it every 3rd day for 6 sets of 10-12 reps your goal is to build up to 10% of your bodyweight. No other upper body movements for now then send me your routine and I will give you the recommendations. Every day first thing in the morning, prior to work out, immediately right after the work out and before bed do contrasting: ice massage the shit out of your shoulder for 3 minutes then apply a heat pad for 3 minutes and alternate 6 times. Every hour stretch your chest, lats, rhomboids and upper traps for 15 seconds for 3 sets. Take a shit load of fish oil to decrease inflammation and work on your thigh flexibility with lunges and work the shit out of your hamstrings. Let me know within a week how your progressing. 2 weeks tops you will be back and stronger than ever.

Boost have you gone to get Ultrasound or MRI yet? When I had my shoulder injury I went to 2 doctors and they both said I probably strained my my muscle or mild tendonitis and said just to go home and rest. I told them that my right AC joint protruded visibly more then the other shoulder and they shrugged it off. So the 3rd time I pushed for an X-ray, even though the doctor rather I just go to physio, but anyways the X-ray came back negavtive. With my shoulder still bothering me I decided to go back and ask for an ultrasound from a third doctor and the results showed that I had a partial thickness tear on rotator cuff. Most of the time doctors just want to send you home with some anti-inflammatories. Listen to your instincts, if you think its more then just a strain then push them for x-ray, ultrasound or MRI to get to the root of the problem.

Ken comes highly recommended by Scott Abel.... and nobody comes recommended by Scott!

definatly check him out if you are in the area..... sounds like you have some issues with subscap or teres major.... either way ART is gonna hurt like hell.... but work wonders!

check out whoever you go to .... get referances.
