Well, the strike in sudbury is over and our union literally sold us out and we are taking a bath, and the contract language is actually worse than not having a union. It looks as though there will be about a 30% worforce reduction and all jobs now regardless of training will be up for grabs, essentially to who management likes or dislikes. With the changes in pay and the new bonus scheme, most stand to lose about 20K a year.

With that being said, I have 8 years service and now looking to move on. During the 1 year strike, I did roam around and realize there are much better paying jobs out there in my field. This brings me to my question. Does anyone here work or know someone who works in Fort Mcmurray? I have an opportunity with CNRL as an electrician but the housing on Remax realty is absolutely insane.

Our home here is 3 years old, about 1500 sq ft with two decks and a double detached garage 30x40 on 5 acres. Here it's worth about 300K top end. This same setup in Fort Mac is about 800K! Mobile homes are running 300K!

If we make the move, we're concerned about what the city has to offer for our kids growing up, cost of living ie. food, gas, utilities. My wife's a teacher but her pay is only a little higher there than here. My wage is double there than here but a mortgage is over double.

What is your concensus on that area?

thanks guys,

Boomer

I lived in Alberta for 10 years and experienced but did not live in Ft Mac. Cost of living is out of control up there and there is a growing issue with hard drug use. A 1 bedroom apt was going for $1000 a month!!!! before utilities!!
I don't know if you'll end up further ahead...as far as kids, the education system in Alberta is a litle different with a Catholic Board and a Public Board.....guess where the better quality is? I'm sure there are others that have more experience directly in the area, but thats what I know

I agree with the above poster. Cost of living is out of control in northern alberta, you can't get around it. You either live on double salary and pay triple everything or just stay where you are and enjoy the home you have.

my bud TJ says the same thing. Have you looked at Sask potash mines? Housing is around the same and wages are a little better. I'd also look at Manroc, Agrium Kapuskasing, and DeBoers, before moving.

I have a buddy works for CNRL as an electrician, not directly but contracted with PH mine pro, servicing Shovels.. 7 on, 7 off, clears 6k a month, 72 k a year, not bad for only working 6 months outta the year...

also working in the pot ash mines pays well, but its a real dirty job, unless its new contruction.

^^^ I agree with the last post. What do you do and why does it have to be Fort Mac. There are other places in AB to work and make very good money and better to raise kids.

thanks for all the replies guys. I guess Fort Mac is out of the question. The only reason I was thinking out there is because an instrument man here has a job offer from cnrl directly and they're greasing him pretty good because they don't want the revolving door of contractors anymore so he's told.

He was told at the interview he's 45/hr, plus bonus, stock options, pension, benefits and yearly wage assessment for cost of living. If he takes it, they pay legal fees for buy/sell, relocation expenses etc...

What else is there in Alberta for heavy industry?

Yeah, looking to get out pretty bad, more reports from the seminars that there is job surplus in the mines at inco as well. By my numbers, there will be a layoff of about 700. There are some vacancies to fill from pensioners but not enough to cover all these surplus jobs according to Vale management.

The feds shafted us well allowing the brazilians to buy inco. They're trying to rewrite our labor laws and gut the workforce, highgrade the ore and leave the environmental disaster after for tax payers.

Look at Grande Prairie. Lots of electrical companies to work for. Journeymen Electricians working on the patch make 100k+ a year. I'm moving there in September.

If you can get a job in Fort Mac go for it. I know many guys that do work there , but they do not live there. If you can get a camp job and do a 7 and 7 than that's what you should do. If your making $45+/hr and living somewhere else you will do alright , IMO.

am I the only one who thinks $45/hr is low assuming a standard 40 hour work week but I guess most aren't working a standard workweek but even if you're working 50 and 60, the tax man is gonna get a large portion of that OT $.

I'm not sure I could live in $45/hr. Well, I could but I wouldn't be socking much away for retirement and savings.

Most of these jobs up here ( well mine anyways ) give you extra for savings like RRSP's . Mine for example is 6% to start , then I put in 8% and they match 6% . So there is an extra 20% ( 8 is out of my pocket , tax free ) of my wage going into savings. Plus there are stock options and such on top of that. My wage isin't the best , but the extra's and the ot make it well worth it.

And if I can support a family on less than that and only one income plus still have fun anyone should be able to do it. :) and the cost of living is higher here than it is in Ontario, I know that forsure.

Yeah 90 grand/yr sucks.....lmao, for 8 hours /day....,.You on crack, or trying to make out like the rich guy?? dumbest post ever....
Many folks would love to make 90 gs a year.......
Anyone making 45/hr is doing well......Anyone making ot at double that for 4-6 hours /day is doing really well....No life, but doing well, income tax is rated on yearly income brackets, so unless you have a whack of writeoffs, you are all in the same boat in February.....You get some back if you pd enough, or you pay more if you didnt....If you make a few weeks of ot money and end of yr comes, you get it back then if it is above your yearly rate..

Sorry dude, I don't work hourly so I didn't really do the math in my head as to what that adds up to.

I worked hourly in school and after that I've always been salary so I don't have a clue what $45/hr translates into. If it's $90K/yr then cool! That's very good and would have no complaints about that.

Also didn't know a lot of these have additional perks like RRSP contributions, living allowances, etc.

Now, go be a dick somewhere else and take the attitude with you

Talking before thinking you say....Not surprised...Well, im sorry youre shitty at math (im salary also and still wrapped my head around the complex problem), but 40 hours/week as you said, if you arent sure, there are 52 weeks in a year.......That would be 2080, then multiply by 45...
Not hard....Theres only a small group with a shitty attitude, and youre on of the elite in there...So save your comments aftr feeling a bit stupid.....It looks good on you...fits like your large t-shirts....lolol
Give it, then take it , then move on without whining.....

Just FYI - a quick way to determine what a hourly wage is per year is to just double it.

Ie. $40 per hour (40 + 40) = 80 grand per year.

This is based on a 40hr work week and is of course very rough, but just to get an idea.

Yup, you're the only one. I specifically remember Lunkhead (who is a Doctor) mentioning he makes about $50/hr.

I just found out today that in the fall I'll be making almost half that much but it's still a really big raise and a big deal for me. Granted I graduated University not that long ago but I'd still say most people don't make 6 figures.
