View Full Version : Seven or more eggs a week raises risk of death

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Middle-aged men who ate seven or more eggs a week had a higher risk of earlier death, U.S. researchers reported on Wednesday.

Men with diabetes who ate any eggs at all raised their risk of death during a 20-year period studied, according to the study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

The study adds to an ever-growing body of evidence, much of it contradictory, about how safe eggs are to eat. It did not examine what about the eggs might affect the risk of death.

Men without diabetes could eat up to six eggs a week with no extra risk of death, Dr. Luc Djousse and Dr. J. Michael Gaziano of Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School found.

"Whereas egg consumption of up to six eggs a week was not associated with the risk of all-cause mortality, consumption of (seven or more) eggs a week was associated with a 23 percent greater risk of death," they wrote.

"However, among male physicians with diabetes, any egg consumption is associated with a greater risk of all-cause mortality, and there was suggestive evidence for a greater risk of MI (heart attack) and stroke."

They urged more study in the general population.

Eggs are rich in cholesterol, which in high amounts can clog arteries and raise the risk of heart attack and stroke.

One expert on nutrition and heart disease said the study suggests middle-aged men, at least, should watch how many eggs they eat.

"More egg on our faces? It's really hard to say at this point, but it still seems, if you're a middle-aged male physician and enjoy eggs more than once a day, that having some of the egg left on your face may be better than having it go down your gullet," said Dr. Robert Eckel of the University of Colorado and a former president of the American Heart Association.

"But, remember: eggs are like all other foods -- they are neither 'good' nor 'bad,' and they can be part of an overall heart-healthy diet," Eckel wrote in a commentary.

The Harvard team studied 21,327 men taking part in the much larger Physicians' Health Study, which has been watching doctors since 1981 who have agreed to report regularly on their health and lifestyle habits.

Over 20 years, 1,550 of the men had heart attacks, 1,342 had strokes, and more than 5,000 died.

"Egg consumption was not associated with (heart attack) or stroke," the researchers wrote.

But the men who ate seven eggs a week or more were 23 percent more likely to have died during the 20-year period.

Diabetic men who ate any eggs at all were twice as likely to die in the 20 years.

Men who ate the most eggs also were older, fatter, ate more vegetables but less breakfast cereal, and were more likely to drink alcohol, smoke and less likely to exercise -- all factors that can affect the risk of heart attack and death.

Did it say anything about eating seven a day? ;)
I hope it had more to do with them frying up their eggs with bacon and sausage and white toast with jam and butter and coffee with cream and sugar...

F'n scientists have already scared me down to 3 cans of tuna a week... now they're trying to scare me off my eggs as well.

Fvck Gordo, you are one big laddy!

Yellow Fin Tuna is okay to eat in abundance.

As for the eggs, I always use a two/one white/yolk ratio. That way I can eat twice as many.

Eat as many egg whites as you want up to a point of coarse. It's the yolks that need to be limited.

Old news.

I'm so glad it's not egg whites - I easily eat 16+ a day. I'm allergic to the yolk anyway.

This is from a good friend and mentor of mine. JP Catanzoro. I can add more to this subject proving that the egg white thing and bad rep whole eggs have is complete sh@T

Here's some personal information to prove a point. I recently had some blood work done and my cholesterol reading was 3.84 mmol/L (the average range is 3.60 - 5.20 mmol/L.) Why am I telling you this? Because I eat half a dozen WHOLE eggs every morning and have been doing this for quite awhile. As a matter of fact, I advocate organic free range whole eggs to everyone as an excellent food source (particularly for breakfast as the high amounts of tyrosine will make you more alert and coherent.) But the common response is: "Oh, I can't do that ... I have to be careful with my cholesterol." EGGS WILL NOT RAISE YOUR CHOLESTEROL!!! Incidently, my fasting glucose read 4.5 mmol/L (the average range is 3.8 - 6.0 mmol/L.) This is the real culprit for high cholesterol because high glucose levels will increase cholesterol via the insuligenic response. There is no direct relationship between dietary cholesterol and serum cholesterol.* In the healthy body, the liver produces about 80 percent of all cholesterol; the other 20 percent comes from your diet. Again, I must reiterate that it is the sugars/starches in your diet (and this includes all that refined, processed "junk" that I preach to stay clear of) that will cause a surge in cholesterol. Whole eggs, as mentioned in the previous newsletter, can actually lower cholesterol levels because the lecithin contained within the yolk will facilitate bile production in the liver which in turn emulsifies fat/cholesterol. And, as far as the concern of Salmonella poisoning with regular consumption of eggs, of course, cooking/boiling eggs is important (never eat raw eggs!) But, did you know that by simply placing an egg under hot running water for 1 minute is enough to kill the Salmonella bacteria. So, forget the nonsense about eggs raising your cholesterol levels and make this a staple in your diet.

I'll bet my left nut that those people dropping off from eating 7 eggs a week loaded up with bacon as well and had a shit diet. The egg flip flop debate is getting old.

That's good news! Is it lower in mercury or something? My wife used to be a sushi chef, she knows where to get the good fish. I'll ask her to pick up some yellow fin.

Soon we won't be able to eat anything. I remember seeing these same reports when I was a youngin and it keeps changing every f'in time. Remember in the early 80's where scientists warned to not eat any eggs at all and then a week later, they say it's okay to eat a max of 2 a week. I say BULLSHIT! Eat normally and enjoy life. Most scientists are idiots :-)

Sounds incredible! But I won't say what grape juice does to me on a public forum hahaha

Wuboy got me hooked on mixing a carton of egg whites with chocolate protein powder and cooking them like a pancake and putting a bit of natural peanut butter on top. WOW. I've never been able to stomach eggs all my life but I eat this every day.

Great post!!! The key also i beleive is stay away from mass produced anything. Here on Vancouver Island we have great access to locally grown produce, dairy, beef etc. ane we take full advantage of this.

Ask yourself who made the study. Most of the early studies done on eggs where by the carb industry and of course wanted to show how they were bad for breakfast when compared to Cap'n crunch.

But this thread is about eggs and the "carb industry" still found bad things about eating too many eggs. I thank them for that. Someone had to do it. On the other hand, too many carbs is equally as bad for you; just in other ways.

lol at that study. Id love to know the variables they looked at, the sample size, the statistical significance of it etc....

Our bodies evolved to eat foods found in nature. We evolved to eat meat, fruits, veggies, roots, (some) fungi and EGGS!

Thats why I like the cave man diet. Leae out the processed, bleached, starched sugared crap and eat the way we were meant to.

Speaking of which, i have about 8 pounds of ground moose in the freezer..... Moose; its whats for dinner! Maybe ill stir in an egg or two, just to live dangerously.
