I've read some threads and posts about proscar, a prescription medication for thinning hair. Guys seem to like this medication for also battling the ever-annoying cycle-related acne. When I looked up proscar I found out that it is a synthetic antiandrogen that acts by inhibiting type II 5-alpha reductase, the enzyme that converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). At first I thought hmmmm isn't that gonna mean good things for my cycle too, less testosterone being converted to DHT, sticking around longer to act on the muscles a little longer. But then I read another article about test and DHT and it had this paragraph:
"I have heard several anecdotal reports of individuals who have stacked testosterone with Proscar (a 5-AR inhibitor) and have noticed significantly reduced performance enhancement effects. What's going on here? We know it couldn't be due to the inhibition of the direct anabolic activity of testosterone on muscle anabolism. Most likely it is due to the reduction of androgenic effects in other parts of the body that contribute to the ergogenic effects. Specifically the CNS, which is stimulated by androgens to increase neural output leading to greater strength and greater recoverability. Another possibility is a reduction in the production of androgen dependent liver growth factors (such as IGF-1), since DHT is an important androgen in the liver."
I'm wondering:
a) if guys have had good experiences with proscar, some threads talk about feeling crappy on it but I can deal with that if it slays the zit-beast that lurks below my skin.
b) has anyone noticed a downside in terms of their cycle? eg. did your gains suffer?
c) what sort of dosage do people do?
As for all those other acne remedies, ya I'm doing 'em and trying to not get stressed about how the zit-beast always seems to be one step ahead of me.
