Whatever became of the Western and Eastern Canadian Championships. Didn't those events used to be highly competitive and popular? When did they stop being contested?

I found an article that states the last Western Canadian Championships was in 1995. I'm trying to find which (if any) organization was promoting it. Do you have any more info on it? Haven't found anything on the Easterns.
