I'm no pro at this, but I've dieted myself down 4 years in a row and every year I crack once.

Don't take my advice as anything more than a matter of opinion.

I have the same issue as you and the thought of food increases as you diet longer, excercise harder, cardio in greater duration, drop your cals, eat the same shot everyday, etc....and the only reason I'm replying to this is because it's about food.

I had my re-feed day last Friday. 1000g carbs pancakes, bagels, ff frozen yogurt, candy and such. Saturday I was feeling really low again, poor Attitude, cold as a mofo, weak as as possible, couldn't think, walk, or talk properly.

Well, Sunday rolls around and I go to the gum do 30min of light cardio and plan to take the day off and just stretch, bump up healthy fats, add a little more protein, etc... Well....that lasted until 10am.

That's when I had a full on cheat day. My first one for the duration of my diet. At that time I was 3 weeks and 6 days out from my show. 12 hours later and 10k calories later I got all of my cravings out of my system and jumped on the diet the following day.

Went up only 3lbs. And now am down 0.albs from last week and still have 2 days of dieting left before I am 3 weeks out.

I took this day as a psychological break, a metabolism boost and a practice for my junkload.

Just my opinion, but cheating, which is what I officially did cause it wasn't planned will not harm 16 weeks or so of dieting. If I was pro I might be able to handle everything that comes along with dieting but I am not.

Do what you seem fit to do. But I truly feel this helps.

Get more opinions and responses though. Do your research, assess yourself physically, and psychologically and decide what needs to be done.

You could also try bumping up healthy cals, backing off training a bit or just suck it up and deal with it.

Good luck with the contest.

Thanks man but I have worked too hard!! Cheating Simply isn't an option in my mind! I am sticking to the game plan.

Tonight was kinds shitty though. I swear I almost passed out on the eliptical. Barely made it

Told you so. Just kidding.

You could also do your water restriction with or without diuretic use and use this day as practice for a contest. If you restrict your H2O and have your refeed you will know what you'll be dealing with contest day.

What type of refeed will you be doing.

Btw, your conditioning is good.

Keep it up.

Also, will you be training on that day.

HAHA I'm just following the boss's orders :P
My refeed will be mostly pancakes :D maybe a few other treats :P
That day I will be doing a leg workout and 2 hours of cardio. I don't think we will be restricting the water intake or anything like that.
Thanks for the compliment man I have worked very very hard to get here and I hope to do well this year

How many grams of the macronutrients are you having? All out cheat day? Or mainly carbs with mod protein and min fat? Or a cheat meal, etc...?

Just curious.

I prefer to shoot for 500 to 800g of carbs, keep fat at a min and protein 1 to 1.5g/lb. Mostly high GI carbs.

Intense Muscle is another good site to look at.

Not going to really be counting man roughly 400g of carbs probably or so and the rest is just a treat. I am not thinking about this one I am just going to do it and enjoy it. I am just Stoked I get to do it.

this makes a lot more sense then having 1000g of carbs on a friday, and 2 days later having another 10000 calories. You're just begging for a disaster to happen doing that!

now u know why I eat a tun of salads when dieting how else u gonna get ur mind off food then to eat it.

You're absolutely right. And that's why I'm it at the level you compete at, additionally I do not have the experience you have under your belt. I do like throwing in the occasional junk meal, but I ****ed up, didn't and ended off eating my face off 2 days later. Well I did drop another lb this week, but I guess I could have dropped another 0.5 on top of that.

At my level and experience I am trying different approaches to dieting and re-feeding.

Stick to the advice that Steve and Greg have to offer you as they have a wealth of knowledge and experience compared to me. My 10k dy was probably somewhat of a set back and 1000g of carbs might not be necessary for me, but they seem to do the trick and I will tweak what I do every time I diet down.

All I can say is I still managed to get back on track, fill out, gain some much needed energy and strength and still drop another lb.

Although dieting is scientific and calculated it is very individualized.

Alright people We are OFFICIALLY 3 WEEKS OUT!!!!

RE-Feed is tonight and I couldn't be more excited!! There will be lots of pics posted this weekend and I will mark the different times on them.

So last week I was 149.2lbs and this week I am 148.6lbs and wow what a difference half a pound makes at this point!! I am very impressed with where my conditioning is at and I think I am just about ready :D

Let me know what you guys think of this weeks pics and please chime in on my conditioning throughout today and tomorrow as I do the Re-feed. We shall see exactly how my body responds to all of this.

and if there is anything that I forgot to say that you are curious about feel free to ask me.

I think I will also weigh myself throughout the day up till the re-feed and see how much my weight is fluctuating from a morning dry to a watery sodium loaded night.

If you don't win your class it won't be because you weren't in the proper condition. You will be ripped to shreds!

BTW stick to the crab style most muscular if they call it. Don't do the standing straight up version.

the upright most muscular must be an east coast thing...It's how I do it, and almost everyone out there has learned it. Personally crab style looks weird to me...covers up too much. If you do crab style, at least drop your arms WAY low, because you'll be covering up your best body part otherwise.

I will put a detailed response in a bit but here are the pics from this morning after the refeed last night weight is .8lbs heavier than yesterday morning

shredded_Tris
24-10-2010, 10:57 AM
Ok so About 30 min into this Re-Feed I literally felt like I chugged a bunch of vodka. I got super dizzy and I felt drunk. My eyes started to droop. I got rediculously vascular.
I know I promised pics from before and after but honestly last night after the meal I was so Sick that I couldn't even stand up. I have never been so close to vomitting haha.
It was great to have a nice tasty treat though and I think it will help me a little bit when it comes to getting through the next 3 weeks a little easier.
I have to say pancakes and waffles have to be one of my favorite things to eat :D
Next big thing on my list though is a big plate of pasta :)
Anyways.....I feel like garbage today, my stomach hurts and I feel like I over-did it a little bit but really the meal wasn't insanely huge. I think I just ate way too fast and had a little more sugar than I am used to.

I'm not sure how to really judge or compare my morning pics but I will say this. If I carbed up a little slower and could retain the vascularity and fullness I had last night minus the bloat and sick feeling I think I will look quite sharp on stage.
Really the only thing I can tell from the pics is that maybe I look slightly harder from the back and a little from the front but I have a hard time judging myself and I just feel shitty right now haha

Thanks D
Why do you think I should do crab though? I always found it to be my least flattering MM pose?

Honestly it has to do with your genetics. With the large pec seperation you look smaller than you are when you're straight up. The crab pose will bring the delts, traps and arms more into view creating a larger/fuller physique.

shredded_Tris
25-10-2010, 10:03 AM
I'll have to see what looks best when I dry out a little more.
Thanks for the input though. Chances are I will do more than one MM shot anyways.

OMG Boys finally starting to feel that shitty hunger coming back lol
After Saturday nights refeed I felt almost sickly full until just a few minutes ago and now the hunger returns!! Full force!
Thank god we only have 19 Days to go.

Today is kinda shitty cause I am sort of second guessing myself. Doing the whole worst critic thing, thinking I am not going to be able to match up to the tough competition. My weight class is so Stacked this year it's sick! I am actually staring to become a little nervous.

steve_d
25-10-2010, 02:22 PM
No need to be nervous. You've set out a goal of coming in shredded, and that will happen. Win or lose, you will look better than last year, so who cares if someone shows up better than you. There will obviously always be someone better than you (until you win the Mr. O), so it means nothing what place your trophy says.

You can't second guess yourself UNLESS you didn't give it your all, and come in as lean and as big as you could have given the time you had to work with. So erase that mentality and focus on how you look YOUR best.

I'd rather place 5th out of 10 insane competitors, than 1st out of 5 shitty ones.

Thanks for all the continued support guys it means a lot to me!
I KNOW I put everything I had into this one so in the end there ISN'T anything else I think I could have done.
It seems like this week is going by SOOOOOOOOO SLOW!! I am starving and exhausted. Super Edgy and the bottoms of my feet hurt so bad from all the cardio it's nuts. 17 more days of Hell!

However next Friday is my last day of work and then I am on Vacation for two weeks, It just seems like work is so busy and it's going by so slow every day! I haven't even had time to work out my routine yet. I'm not too worried about it though my song is all cut and ready and it can only be 1 minute so how complex can my routine be anyways lol.

Cravings aren't out of control but they are pretty bad.....Unfortunately my Girl had to make a chocolate cake the other night and I almost died! I got through it though without going near the kitchen. She felt super bad about it but didnt have any other choice. She is great support for me. She has to get ready for a bake sale and she is using her friends house to do all the baking at JUST FOR ME :D
THANK GOD haha!
Anyways I gotta get back to work but I will have updates and pics for you guys again this Saturday.

Here is something I was curious about!!

WHO on here Pumps their ABS before going out on stage. I noticed the other night my abs were huge after working them for just about 5 minutes the other night. It was insane! something I never really did at a previous show.

Opinions??

I'd say no way...pump up your upper extremities...delts, tris, bis (curls, push ups, laterals for delts etc) but stay away from the abs and legs...others may have diff opinion...

I never pump my tris...Only the small pump they might get from a few pushups. Quickkly after doing a few sets of triceps, they get so pumped they lose a lot of the cuts. Same deal with quads.

ST....here is an exerpt from a great article that I kept...it pretty much sums things up for you with pump up, mindset etc...(like I said...I did not author this but wish I had). There are some great articles on BB.com as well for spare time reading as u undoubtedly have tons of spare time on ur hands right now...haha ...yeah right

Back Stage...

When I go to the contest I take a MP3 player with my posing music. I try to find a place by myself back stage so I can practice my posing routine. By doing this, my routine is fresh in my mind before going on stage in front of the audience and judges.

When pumping up before going on stage I will do some light, high rep, upper body exercises such as push ups, bent over rows, bicep curls, etc. with a rubber fitness band. Never pump up the legs or the abs, these muscles always look and flex better when they are not pumped. Do not pump up too much because it will make you shake when you pose. Just warm up and get the blood flowing to the muscles.

And the last thing that I recommend is to go out there and have a good time. Be confident and proud of your accomplishments and put on a good show for the crowd. At this point you have done all you can do, now it is up to the judges to decide the rest.

Anyways I got busy eating too many carbs and didn't post them.

I will post them in a bit I have to go do an oil change on my car first :S

i agree slightly higher elbow positioning on front and rear double bi.

steve_d
01-11-2010, 08:14 AM
yep...but more so for the rear double bi. Front i'd actually be curious to see what you'd look like crunching in your abs. Abs is pretty much your best body part, so elongating it might make you look thinner than you actually are.

No Worries Guys I appreciate the help. Thats a big no go on the crunched abs though it makes me look horrible and takes away my V-taper completely and makes me look narrow and boxey. I will show you with the next pics I take but I cannot for sure pull that one off

Holy Crap yesterday was a tough day! I had to leave work because I was so Sick to my stomach. I think it may have been Saturdays Refeed coming back to haunt me. anyways I slept from basically 10-5 waking up only for water, meals and bathroom runs. Didn't make it to the gym but still busted out a solid cardio session.

Today I feel much better and I am finally tightening back up. I really overdid the refeed haha. Not sure what my weight is at because I want to wait until Saturday like I usually do so I don't get freaked out if my number is a little off because of the refeed or something.
Over the next week and a half I have to take a lot more pics so I will try and post as many as I can for you guys and maybe a few different poses to get your opinions on them.

Only 4 more days of Work!!:D
Only 7.5 more Days of Cardio!!
Only 7 More Workouts!!
Only 7.5 More Days until Carbs!!
AND 11 Days until SHOWTIME!!!

But really......Who's Counting lol

thetruepitbull
02-11-2010, 06:22 PM
Weight gain will only be food and water.

I know I might get shot on again for this but my last refeed was on Saturday. 12 hours all I can eat carbs. Everything was low fat. Maybe hit 80g of fat and 200g of protein. But put away about 1200 to 1500g of carbs. Had to sleep lying up and basically force the carbs down my throat. BP and heart rate through the roof. Horrible night sweats.

Weight only went up 2.5lbs. I don't know how that's possible but I only gain a little when I eat alot.

By Monday, I dropped that 2.5lbs.

What are your refeed days like.

PS you look better with every pic.

Thanks man!
Progress for this show seems to have been great for me and I have learned a lot this time around for sure. I didn't really plan any refeeds over this Diet I just had them when I was told to have them so they aren't really set in stone or anything. I have no idea exactly how many Grams of carbs I had this time but it was more than enough and I was in a lot of pain haha. I could definitely feel my body working hardcore OT to burn it off though that night and the next day.

just can't help but wonder though how much muscle materity plays in conditioning. I know some guys that can get ripped so much easier and it seems to always be the older guys. What age did you start to notice hardness increases that were very notable?

steve_d
04-11-2010, 08:18 PM
my most recent show only...although, when I was 20 I got just as ripped, and again when I was 24...but as I get older, that same level of conditioning was achieved without as much muscle loss.

Basically those 3 shows were the leanest I got. when I was 20 I turned into a twig to get that lean. at 24, it wasn't as bad. but still toothpick legs. at 30, there wasn't really any body part that suffered in terms of muscle loss.

Thanks buddy
Yeah I've got the bible in hand. Not much is changing until Wednesday when we bring fats and carbs back in and then we are judging it from there but the plan is set. Not much shit loading....more clean than anything which is the way I like to go. I think it's stupid when people go and eat like a 12" pizza after the weigh in and shit like that! They say they look better but I think they are just carb drunk ahaha!!

u ate 1500 grams of carbs 200 grams protein and 80 grams of fat sat? so like over 7000 calories. did u consider that u could have eated an extra 500 cals each day that week and had way more energy felt better looked better trained harder and lost more fat then starving urself every day and eating 5000 extra cals all at once and having to force feed. I jsut wish bodybuilding could be made more healthy and fun for the avg person. I dont understand the logic in doing this. Oh well everyone has their own training methods. Good luck at the show ill be there mornign and night.

You just hate when people don't follow the Greg Doucette method don't you? You know, not everyone is the same right? Last time I checked you thought Keto Diets were stupid anyways so, who's to say you really fully know everything to be able to Criticise everyone who doesn't follow your methods to a T

Prae knows exactly what he is doing and I will continue to follow his word as gospal. We will see how this shows on Saturday.

I think I read 1200-1500 grams of carbs. Instead of me looking back u could jsut let me know how many it was. I'm not trying to start a fight or even an argument just like to debate topics. Ur right i am totally against the keto diet mostly for health reasons and post show rebounds. I'm not asking or telling anyone to follow my diet. I think I mentioned not everyone does everything the same way.

When ur as passionate about something as much as I am and I would argue that I am one of the most passionate competitors in the country i wish for the best in everyone else who does what I do. I don't cheer against anyone I hope everyone does there best and reaches their goals. Same goes for u. I wish u the best of luck and training and hope u can accomplish what u set out to do.

I may have missread or overcalculated the calories u took in in one day but I just always recommend that whne people follow a diet they do their own research on top of what the trainer is saying and self educate.

On a final note I have no trouble maintaining below 9% bodyfat over a year since my last show and have added muscle every year for over 15 years now. Not too many people out there can say that. I am not saying I know more then anyone else but I am saying that I am 100% against a ketogenic diet especially one that follows this up with a massive amount of all u can eat calories. It simply is does not make sense. I have yet to come across research to support this and I do have a masters degree and had the highest avg in university (okay enough bragging from me now)

once again good luck in the show, if there is a bantamweight class u must be the favorite.

I had less than half that amount of carbs. You were reading someone elses post because I never actually put down any numbers. I am extremely passionate in this sport as well and I believe my progress over the last year and a half definitely supports that.
I did keto for this diet and it worked amazingly but I have only been doing it for the final 7 weeks and I am not doing a fool ass "eat 24 whole eggs a day or anything" it's clean don't worry about that and I am getting all of my nurtients for sure.
I also do plenty of my own research and just because I follow a coach doesn't mean I don't understand, ask questions and learn as I go. Nobody is perfect no matter how much you might think you know you can always know more.

Thanks for the compliments though man I do appreciate it. I just kinda got rubbed the wrong way by you the last time we met up, so it's tough for me to be real acceptive of your advice. No disrespect but I felt pretty shitty after talking to you, thats all I'll say.

Anyways on the last note, Sadly like I said in an earlier post there is no bantam weight class and I will be lumped in with guys weighing as much as 160lbs but I am not dissapointed. Plus it's great knowing I could be a bantam weight at nationals if I chose to be.

I don't like to consider myself a favorite in any case because that just sets ups dissapointment. I am going in with an open mind in hopes that my conditioning will be favored by the judges. It's really ALL I can do at this point. You Never know who will show up.

The keto diet has been used successfully by the medical community for over 50 years to treat many health issues namely diabetes and epilepsy. Ketosis is a natural healthy state when the body is deprived of carbohydrate. It is in no way unhealthy unless you are talking ketoacidosis which is completely different. Please post research showing that the keto diet is unhealthy. Again I believe we have had this discussion before and carbs are still used on the keto diet...which in fact are utilized for training in stead of ketone bodies.
Also the "all u can eat" idea is completely incorrect. Further more whether you run a keto diet or a typical cyclical carb diet you will still get post show rebound...the idea is to adjust the diet accordingly and use it to your advantage.

All I have to say is yes I am the one that ate 1500g of carbs. And it's not all I can eat. At first it's a cheat meal, then cheat days, then moderate amount of carbs, then higher amounts as I get closer to the condition I want to achieve.

I don't have a coach I have taught myself everything I know. I'm competing at the SWFC, an amateur event, And I don't feel that a coach is necessary at this level. Alot are in it for quick cash and the competitors who have a coach usually seem to know jack about what they are doing. Ex. How many grams of carbs are you having? "a cup of oats in the morning." they don't even know how many grams in a cup....

Competing should be a combo of science and knowledge of ones own body.

Like 2 days ago...another 1200g down. Went from 152.5 to 155.5 the next day. Metabolism was jacked once again and I bet dollars to doughnuts that when I step on the scale today I'll be down to 153 or lower. I'm 5'4" and a bit.

Can reach as high as 205 in the 'offseason' when I feel like eating what I want and enjoying food. Or maintain sub-10 if I want which I demonstrated for 3 years. But I choose not too.

I am also on a Keto diet. I start with carb cycling then eliminate carbs throughout the prep. Do I feel like shit? Yes. Who doesn't when prepping?

Sorry for the post. I'm upset as well because I'm a week out, nervous, depleted and exhausted. But to tell someone they can't have said amount of carbs or that Leto dieting is not healthy is opinion not supported by any empirical evidence. And it feels personal when it shouldn't.

Ps. Greg you're a great guy, a big inspiration and will always be a valuable asset to any board or individual. But, there are many ways to get contest ready, and BB is bot a healthy sport if taken seriously. To each their own.

Well a few weight updates for you guys

Sunday morning I was 143.6lbs
This morning I was 144.4lbs

This is because I did my final leg depletion workout on Sunday and I always hold a bit more water after a leg day.

Things are going great!! I will be posting pictures probably thursday morning after my first carb day on Wednesday.

Cardio has been put down to 40 min X 2 from Saturday. 40 minutes is a cakewalk after doing 1 hour for so long now!

I am pretty exhausted but hopefully energy will increase once I start getting some carbs into me wed.

Oddly enough it's a semi sad feeling when the training and cardio is over.

What was 3-4 hours of your day occupied with training is now just empty time sitting around waiting til your next meal and til show day.

Staying busy is tough because the mental aspect in your mind says "i'm done, nothing left to do" which is baaddd.

Pose as often as you can. Try to do 20-30 min posing sessions 2 - 3 times a day just to keep yourself busy.

Video games come in handy too. So does sleep lol

I hate the Wednesday/Thursday/Friday time period for prep

So I decided to just post these now instead of tomorrow lol
My weight this morning was 144lbs and after eating carbs all day and drinking lots of water I weighed 150.6lbs in these pictures taken at 12:15am Thursday 2 days out

Feeling great!
two more days of filling out tanning up and drying out and I should be golden. No pun intended haha

Well off to bed for now
Unfortunately my carbs for tomorrow are cut in half, but then again we are 1 day closer so I can deal with it.

So here are a few more pictures that I like, I will upload more when I get the CD from the show.
The last few days have sucked. I haven't been able to eat any carbs since like sunday night. My Body freaked out and I swole up 20lbs to the point where it hurts.
I only just started peeing again about 3 hours ago, so thankfully I might be finally starting to go back to normal but that was really scarey. My body has never rebounded like that before. I am so swollen I look like I have been eating like complete shit.....when in reality I can only still dream of cake.
Hopefully soon things will normalize and I will be able to have a few treats again.

Anyways this weekends show went great and I couldn't be happier with the results. A lot of people thought I should have came in second but I guess the judges just didnt see it that way.
When I get some better comparison photos I will post them.
In most pics though I am beside Mike, who was the Overall Champ so I guess you can at least see how I measured up to him
