Hey guys I was wondering how sodium affects you when dieting. I know that too much will make you retain water, and I know that might make you look fatter than you are, or if you are dieting for a comp, well holding water is bad. But if you are just dieting to get cut up, does sodium negatively affect your ability to lose fat?

For example: Lets say you are following a good diet and your total caloric intake is 2000 cal/day, which is about 500 cals less than you are burning per day. But you don't really watch your sodium intake. Will too much sodium interfere with fat loss somehow?

no, you're just more likley to retain water. Its still calories in vs. calories burned that causes weight loss. The selection of foods and exercise/rest will determine whether its fat or muscle lost & will have some effect on hormone levels. sodium changes will effect hormone levels but not significantly effect fat loss.

Actually I find its better not to limit sodium too much cuz if you do and you happen to have a cheat day with increased sodium your aldosterone will be cranked and it'll turn you into the stay-puffd marshmallow man

Never restrict sodium while dieting. Sodium allows for muscle contraction, increases the sodium potassium pump, pulls water and glycogen into the cell(volumization) which prevents atrophy, keeps aldosterone levels low (prevents water retention), prevents cramping. As long as water intake in moderately high you will flush any excess sodium.

Thanks for the input guys.

So then adding spices/salt to chicken/meat/fish is ok, as long as they don't have any sugars or significant calories?
