post a video. it's almost assuredly a technique issue.

years and years of hitting it heavy and admittedly some ego training now and again as well has messed them up nicely

I can tell you. A lot of the weight is getting shifted to the balls of my feet in the squat and thus the knee pain. Also i flare my feet out \ /
Any suggestions?

try box squats?

will force you to sit back and take the knees out of the lift a fair amount (since you are pushing off with glutes/hams)

As Nate said, obviously you need to be sitting back, but in order to critique the technique you need a short vid. camera phone quality is fine. from the side and from the front, warm up weitght best form, a solid weight and heavy weight with form just starting to break down are going to pretty much tell the whole story.

recently had knee surgery (minicus repair). It was recommended to me to take Glucosamine and Chrondroitin. Got 500 caplsules at costco for just over $20. I think it definitely speed up my recovery and strength, my knees feeling pretty good and I will continue to take it. Physio helped but when they cut you lose they suggest just continuing to stretch and do there recommended exercises daily, as well as bike.

I got rid of my knee pain by reducing the muscular imbalance..
quads were too tight, hams not strong enough.

Trainer suggested that and taught me the proper squat ( sitting back properly).. of course I thought my squat was good already...

this and lots of stretches to relive the pressure on my knees fixed most of it..

just my experience.. not sure about your reason for knee pai

^^ I'd agree with this. I think being tight in the hips, hams and it bands causes a lot of knee issues. I can't say for sure but I suspect it does.

I am going to start some deep stretching and foam rolling on my cardio only days twice a week and I have a feeling it will really help

another thing I have found which is helping me. Squatting very slowly on the downward motion making sure that I really think about staying tight, sitting back and pushing my needs outwards. Yes I can't use as much weight but I haven't been able to use that much for a while now anyway and this is actually allowing me to go a bit heavier than I had been in recent months.

AND, making sure there is ample blood in my quads before hitting the squats which is why I am liking the neil hill style of training where he supersets leg presses and squats. The pump in my quads seems to act as some sort of cushioning which also helps.

I started leg pressing first exercise , then squating my second exercise and the pain in my knees is 90% gone .

same. Couple this with going really really slow and it helps a lot!
