I have computers that are 3-4 years old that are still running the original install. One of the big issues is crappy software that does not uninstall itself properly. Regclean is a utility that was built for Win98 but works on Xp. It is a freebie utility written by Microsoft, so you can start with that. You can get it here http://www.createwindow.com/wininfo/regclean.htm

Make sure you run defrag on a regular basis to keep things clean as well.

10 years and running...I have a computer expert that comes in once and a while and fine tunes everything.

Bit-rot happens at different rates for each person, I usually reinstall every few years myself.

UMMMM...XP has not been around for 10 years. Or are you running something else?

I erased some programs/files today and saved more to an external hardrive on both my CPUs. Afterward I ran the registry cleaner on both.

My laptop is running at lightening speed again but my desktop(which is a stronger PC) is still chugging! That ones Media Center.

Maybe its Media Center?

Sometimes it is the background programs like virus scanners that can have this affect, or even a virus. You can try running spybot. It is a good free scanner. Also, Windows defender is decent. I would stay away from Norton. If you hit CTR ALT DEL you will bring up the task manager. Go to the perfomance tab and if you aren't doing anything the CPU usage should be below 5%. Also check the Physical Memory availabe, 1,000,000 is 1 gig. Oh and don't forget to defrag.

I just partition my drive into two, install XP on the primary, get it set up how I like it, and create a ghost image of it.

When stuff starts running slow, I copy and backup any important stuff to the second partition, and just re-image the primary one. Running like new in about 5 mins!

I like to keep things running smooth so I do this monthly pretty much.

I've had one comp running 3 years with no problem. But a cleanup and a defrag is good now and then.

These days there are malicious apps that can screw your os to where a clean install is much easier than 12 hours to repair it, make sure you install all your drivers and set up your email before doing the image so you dont have to do it every time you reinstall from the image, dont make the image till everything is perfect and the way you like it, otherwise that is great advice and what i do with all my servers.
