I have been swimming laps for cardio in the last couple of weeks. Just wondering if you guys think it is a good way to do cardio or is it just a waste of time. Hope this isn't a stupid question
I did notice that since I started swimming most of my back pain has gone away.
IMHO swimming is not a waste of time at all for cardio.
A lot of guys don't do it I think because they suck at swimming thats all.
As long as you're keeping a HR of at least 130 and up go for it.
I see it as being great for active recovery as well.
I also see it as being a great way to do interval training.
Now the eliptical thats a waste of time! lol

swimming is hard to beat as a form of cardio(if you are doing it right), and without the impact of regular exercises.

Thanks japh, I'm not very good at it but I can get my way across. Heart rate is definitely at around 130

Done properly swimming is the champ for most people.
Added effort with no impact.
Full body work out and if done right you have to be aware of your breathing making it a great integration work as well.
Make sure that you are swimming different styles in order to not do too much overhead movement.
I tried but mu pool sucks and the only thing that I got was a cold.

.
I like the breast stroke...
I'm just kidding around. I mean no offense. I just consider it one of the least effective forms of cardio thats all.
Remember the thread was asking about cardio and not fat loss. For steady state low intensity cardio for fat-loss I don't see any problem with it.
For bodybuilding purposes its a great way to get lean with the least strain in my opinion but thats about it. How many guys do you see on an eliptical with a HR of 170 bpm ?
I prefer a treadmill on an 18% percent incline or a stepmill. Throw in a 50 lb x vest and then you're really talking! lol
The mere fact that a person could wear an x vest on an eliptical and not make the exercise any harder tells me everything I need to know right there cardio wise.
For low intesity non fonctional cardio as a means to solely get lean its one of the best. Take that for what its worth though. I know I'm not going to gain any popularity points on that one since this site is predominantly just BB. I enjoy more than BB in the gym though.
I used to love the backstroke, one shoulder doesn't like it anymore.
