EV1 Enigma Examined
By Wired Blogs EmailJune 19, 2006 | 3:32:15 PMCategories: Electric Vehicles
A new documentary investigates the short career of GM's electric vehicle, the EV1. Who Killed The Electric Car (trailer) will be in theaters beginning June 28.

Although the EV1 only lasted in the market for about as long as your typical NFL lineman's career (7 years), the folks who drove the vehicles, which were only available to rent, swore by the cars. But in 2003 and after $1 billion spent, GM made the curious decision to collect and then shred all of the cars.

Was GM protecting trade secrets, or did the dark influences of big oil force them to scrap the vehicles? Even more suspiciously, the EV1 that was on display at the Smithsonian, was recently taken off the museum floor and mothballed. Hmmm.

Electric vehicles are poised to make a comeback, with FeelGoolCars soon to release the ZENN and Commuter Cars producing the Tango. It may take a company outside of the influence of big oil to bring back EVs for good.

I have the documentary of who killed the electric car. It's worth the time to watch it if you get the opportunity.

Wasn't it going around that electric cars were developed as early as the 70's but every time they were going to make an appearance, they would 'mysteriously' get yanked. Any time an alternative fuel source is developed it's never been able to get commercially off the ground. Seems like the big push for alternative fuel can't get stopped now, it's too public. It can be seriously hampered and slowed down in progress though..maybe enough time for the oil barons to invest their money elsewhere? Be great if the electric car was made more efficient, then maybe we could arrange to have food prices stay down.

All the EV1s were rounded up and shredded by the US govt.
