sorry.. very angry right now!!
my work told me they would switch holidays if i needed for my comp in august.
Well.. i made it to nationals (qualified) and put in my request... AND IT WAS DENIED!!!

FLUCK (MP... im not swearing... well i am.. im really mad)

i can pay somone cash to work my shift for me... and i have a friend who offered, but it will cost me over 600 bucks cash out of pocket instead of getting paid vacation for the time.

oh well.. i guess id better tighten up the purse strings until then, and make due with the same costume and suit and routine.. and plan on doing my own hair and makeup and nails.. uurrgghh, and maybe hitch hiking a ride with a trucker or something out to toronto...

So much for the city being supportive of health and wellness!

actually... the mayor of the city of winnipeg's ex wife works out at my gym... lol maybe ill talk to her to talk to him to talk to transit.. hhmmmm eveil plan formulating

600 bucks? how many days were you taking? Just take the friday off before the show...makes for a hard last work week, but still do-able.

Unless you work weekend...

uhh her show is in Toronto.

Water manipulation with one day is virtually impossible. Flying makes it difficult enough even arriving a couple days in advance. Couldn't imagine doing it day before. Yikes!

^ can be done. I've flown to many shows the friday morning before a saturday show. It just means peeing lots on the plane, and continuing to drink up when you land. I never really felt that flying did anything bad in terms of dehydration.

I think for nationals in vancouver we flew up friday, Greg certainly had no problem with geting dry!

Not sure if you explained your situation to your manager.... and his manager. Don't give up quite yet BUT (big but) don't do it angry or sulky. Calmly communicate your need, the reason, and the position you are forced into and appeal to your manager and director. Don't be angry or sulky. Keep it facts based and reasonable. Give yourself a couple of days to cool down :)

You may be surprised what a calm escalation with a good explanation can do. Or you may run into another **** stick but it's worth addressing.

ok.. friends pulled thorugh!! I have a freind with holidays who is switching with me... I just need to actually pay for 2 days to get covered, but have a friend in toronto I can stay with... so what ill save on hotel.. ill just spend on paying for those two days off!! Im still pissed at my work. i think they could have taken this as an opportunity to promote health and wellness and gain alot of support from the public and other union members... but they blew it lol... what a difference 24 hours can make.

I was going to put on my bikini and stand on osborne and broadway with a sign "will do fitness holds for cash" lol better than them squeegie kids!

they blew it?

I'd say you blew it by not speaking with them directly in a calm and rational manner. You don't know their reasoning behind their denial and maybe it was an oversight for why they didn't give you the day off.

Communication is key and if you have a problem you should ask them about it. Sulking in the corner solves nothing in my opinion.

Glad you were able to make the switch tho.

hey Nate... know what.. you are correct! I blew it!! I did follow procedure, and it didn't work.. I should have gotten things sorted before i qualified.. but I figured that would have been presumptuous.. and by the time i put in my switch for holidays, they had already accomidated other people's switches for the same week...
it was kinda lousy because when i had to pick my holidays, (last september) i didnt know when ntnls was.. but it's all just excuses.

i read your reply before i went to work this afternoon, and I took your advice to heart! I wrote a letter to the director of transit and explained the situation. I requested that transit cover the two days that I'm still kinda "on the hook" for. It's like a sunday and monday. I explained the commitment I amde to my sport, and my placing at provincials, and explained the steps i have taken in lieu of being turned down for holiday switch (getting someone to cover my shifts etc).. Im not sure if it will work... but it was worth a try! So thanks!! Very helpful post!

(even if I am turned down, I feel better about having explained things!)
