I know that I have a virus on there but I can't run the anti virus program. So I downloaded avg's boot recovery disc. When I run it the program only completes about 1/4 of the scan and then the comp shuts down.
Any way to resolve this issue would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Worst case scenario back your files and look for a new hard drive. Other than that z83 has got the right idea.
Have you run the scan more than once and found that it errors at the same part? Have you tried running chkdsk? Maybe a bad sector on your HD or maybe Im paranoid.

I'm not sure where the avg scan stops exactly. When I run it I don't have the patience to stare at the screen for seven to fifteen minutes. When I return the computer is shut down.

I don't need to save anything at all. It really doesn't matter if everything is wiped off and I start from scratch.

Do you have the original operating system disk. Just reformat your entire hard drive and you will be starting from scratch. I had the same issue with a Dell and they walked me through it took about an hour to completely reformat back to factory condition

No I don't have the disk....Were you able to reformat without logging into windows?

Yes you hit one of the F* buttons on the startup screen which takes you to the boot menu and from there you have to re partition your hard drive and re install the operating system. Im not a techy or anything so i dont know the specifics as dell walked me through my issue.

f8 or f9 usually
are you still having issues ?
if you download a ubuntu Linux LIVE cd you can boot form that and save your data . http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download
then we can reformat your hard drive if you want .
