Natives who live on reserves are tax exempt on everything - they have a special card. How much federal/provincial tax do we pay for a liter of gas? Not sure but I'd estimate 35-40%.

Mr Ontario

Yes! I would like to know as well....do they get to save the tax? if thats the case they say all the cost hikes are because of tax or the majority of it.

It's not just raising food prices, it's raising the price of everything. Think of this for a second. 99% of everything we use is brought in by truck/plain/boat. Those all use fuel. Price of fuel goes up, it costs companies more to bring the product in. Higher delivery costs means a higher priceto the consumer. We aren't just paying for this rise in price at the pumps, we are paying for it with almost everything we buy.

As much as we all might bitch and moan, gas in acutally cheap. I mean oil demand is increasing while supplies are shrinking, and oil will eventually be gone altogether. It has much more important uses than getting you from A to B. Check out todays National Post biz section. The major auto manu. want the gov't to increase the cost of fuel. Why? So they won't have to work as hard to improve the efficiency of their cars. Only through the increased cost of fuel will we become more fuel efficient. You should check out Europe where gas is twice the cost. As for becoming our own island where we keep our gas for ourselfs, won't work. Take a look at Iran. They are swimming in oil, but have to import gasoline and subsibising it a a HUGE cost to the gov't. WHy? Why would anyone build a gasonline refinery when gas is sold for pennies a litre? Plus there is NO incentive whatsoever to improve auto efficiences, so they drive big dirty old cars that use lots and lots of gas.
I'm still floored when I see people driving HUGE SUV's. Have fun @$1.20/L!

Endorsed by Rudolf Diesel himself
It turns out biodiesel is not a new idea. When Rudolf Diesel introduced his signature engine at the 1900 Paris Exposition, he said two words as he started it: "Peanut oil." He'd designed his engine so farmers could grow their own fuel. Most diesel engines were indeed run on vegetable oil until the 1920s, when the petroleum industry promoted a gasoline byproduct as diesel fuel.

There is a lil info that I found on the net
it being a by product of gas was something I heard a long time ago, seems like it was at one time...

ain't gonna work! Those damm diesel engines are so efficient that they don't produce much heat. If the outside temp is below freezing (kingston..brrrr) then you are going to grind to a halt sooner rather than later. My bro had a cummins Ram and he plugged her in @ night and on the -20 days he saw the temp guage drop on his way into work!

Well I do know that you have to upgrade all your lines to stainless if you decide to run a high level biofuel. The oil is quite corrosive to rubber and you'll leak sooner or later if you don't upgrade. BTW, biodiesel makes diesel engines last longer as it lubricates the engine innards better than diesel itself.

Win, win in my book. :hu

Going Green, pfft. When I see Al Gore, Beyonce, Bono, Elton and the other pop star preachers go green is the day I go green. Seriously, does Al Gore really need 3 - 30 inch computer LCDs or does Travolta really need to live in a 8000 sq mansion and have 3 727's parked by his HUGGGEEEE house?

Oh ye of little faith! The Europeans have been living with gas prices twice as high as ours for decades. And they have adjusted. Most cars are small with tiny 4cl with the bigger cars with v6 and the occasional v8.

We will adjust, but it's hard when it's such a rapid rise but oil at $200 will cause a HUGE increase in demand for more fuel efficient vehicles and gizmo's and gadgets. For instance I heard yesterday that Sears will be the first to sell a drain heat recovery system. When you run hot water down the drain via showers, dishwashers, washing machines etc, this gizmo will pipe cold water into the system to be warmed via the waste water then the warm water will be piped into the water heater. Supposedly will pay for itself in 4-5years. This is just the beginning. GM's plug-in electric Volt car if they get is right will be HUGE.

We pretty much are. It's the joys of living on an island, all the gas has to be delivered here via truck on ferry or train cars on a barge. I just start to laugh when people are complaining about gas that's 10 cents cheaper than what we pay, no offense.

But, I think I have a solution, and something that would give an incentive to people to be smarter regarding their choice of vehicle. To understand me, I'm a car lover. I'm a driver. I hate automatic's and CVT's, it's not true driving. I love the art of driving, cornering - everything. But, that doesn't mean that I like the gas prices.

My belief? I believe that the larger the vehicle, the higher gas price one should be paying per liter for that vehicle. Why should someone buying an economical commuter vehicle that is enough to do what they need pay the same price as someone that wants their vehicle for show? The person creating the largest carbon footprint should be taxed more for it.

Sure they are in some ways, but where is the incentive for someone to buy a smaller, less powerful car - besides having a slightly smaller gas tank and having a slightly better EPA. The person filling the largest tank and driving an inefficient vehicle should pay more in taxes per liter and overall volume, where as the person driving the more economical car should get a break on the tax per liter and overall volume.

As well, if more people would realize that they do not need a 5.7 liter Hemi to drive 2 kids to school and to and from the grocery store, and drive more efficient models then there would be less of a demand for gas from foreign sources, leading to less overall volume needed to bring in, resulting in a lower overall gas price. More efficient vehicles means less consumption, and better for all of us in the end.

Matt :)

Hi Matt, what you say is true but it will only happen in a fantasy world. We all know that gas prices are heavily influenced by greed by the oil companies and the govt. Gas price of 1.29/liter is over 40% - 50% tax according to the Canadian Tax Payers Association. Do you think the govt collects enough taxes? Ottawa can easily remove the burden on its citizens by lowering the gas tax but those fatcats are wayyyy too happy filing up their coffers. Heard last week aobut the lastest govt scam, a bunch of MP's used tax payer money to pay for their own private home improvements, nice huh?

I'm sick of this small worldism outlook. The world is paying through the ass for oil. Oil is finite, production is flat (or decreasing) and demand is UP! So what do you think is going to happen? Basic economics of supply and demand.

In a few years all the new high tech research into alternative energy supplies/devices etc will start hitting the market. This is only because of the super high cost of oil. The world is unfolding as it should, but it hurts in the short term.

I couldn't figure how speculators drive the price up on market and it directly effected the price in the big ass gas tanks at the gas stations bought at a lower price????? Talk about a scam and worse the gov't does nothing except say they will look into it, maybe.

prices are expected to fall significantly......price of oil is declining.....futures are toast....gas should follow suit......ike did not hurt production.......

UkrainianGuy
16-09-2008, 12:18 AM
doesnt matter just like the the bullshit they shovel about 9/11 they can make up any excuse to raise the princes.. "Oh the plant had no electricity for 2 days" or "there so much water it slowed down the transportation of fuel thus costing million of dollars."

there is no way to win this battle ... but hey there always a MOPED!

they? ......prices in texas arent jacked up......and they already reported that ike didnt do any hard damage to production in the gulf......they are expecting prices to fall in canada in the near future as well.....

tex
16-09-2008, 12:25 AM
^^ it usually takes 6 months for the price to be effected at the pump....remember the time between gettin it out of the ground to processing to getting it to you......you gotta cycle through it all chief......

gsxr750
16-09-2008, 12:29 AM
Then I shouldn't be feeling the effects of Ike for 6 months either.

UkrainianGuy
16-09-2008, 12:32 AM
no no u got it wrong they jacked the price OVERNIGHT cause they ANTICIPATE Ike effecting production... so when will they anticipate good things and lower the prices.. lol

For those in Montreal. Am I the only one that notices gas prices go up by 12 cents every Wednesday or Thursday night. It's been like that for 2-3 months now.

I just finished paying off my first car. Only has a 2.4L so gets decent fuel economy but I drive 112km round trip to work every day. Wanted to bite the bullet and buy a Prius but I'm trying to save up for a house and even used hybrids are fairly $$$. I hope gas prices don't keep going up, this summer is probably going to be really brutal.

Without higher gas prices there will be no pressure develop truly sustainable alternative energy sources and people will continue to buy cars which are fuel inneficient.
