Here's something interesting, the town of Qualicum (sp?) Vancouver Island is passing a no smoking bylaw within city limits. Just heard it on the radio this morning so i don't have all the details. Not sure if this is a first in Canada. Should be interesting to see how they are going to pull this off....

I don't think that is possible, a law like that might actually be illegal as long as cigarettes are legal.

In a small town like mine and the 30 feet from store front. If enforced that would mean no smoking downtown here......

I'd like to see it happen. After that I would like to see the law challenged at the supreme court of canada. If upheld, it will be the solution to rid the world of that filthy habit. Surely though, most of the gov't doesn't want it out as they make too much money from from taxing it.

It's like this in some parts of Ontario. You're allowed to smoke, just not in public places...which is great. Soon enough the whole country will be smoke free....I'd say in 10 years or so.

Thats what i'm wandering. But it's only illegal if someone actually challenges it and that would take money. And think about it, just what does "not smokeing within city limits" means? Can you no longer smoke in your home, in your car? That would open up a can of worms..

Like i said, i don't know anymore than that but i'm curious as to where this go's.

I find it so funny that the media and people in our society have taken such a stand on smoking, I for one don’t smoke and don’t agree with smoking, but! Our wonderful government needs to find a substitute for the money the tobacco companies provide, I wonder where that money comes from? Well its clear to me that Alcohol commercials have sky rocketed drinking and driving is through the roof and not to mention the amount of Canadians that are alcoholics, and the numbers keep on rising, also I wonder how many smart people here don’t smoke but instead take their gear and go get pissed out of their minds while on cycle? Alcohol has killed way more people then smoking has and will continue to be the number one killer.

Yup the tax shortfall will be made up somewhere and it will be huge. Than they will go after fat people. Many on this board will cheer, but this will give Gov. an oppurtunity to tax any foods they deem unhealthy.

You'll likely be able to still smoke in your own house (maybe with no kids around) but maybe that'll be the extent of it. I'd be happy to see them stop it in public places as well. Maybe they're setting it up so that once the government loses all that revenue from cigarettes, they'll legalize pot. Unless of course that this is a way to circumvent having to legalize pot...since you won't be able to smoke it anywhere?

Not to worry about the butts starting fires Bowlcut, the industry solved that problem by putting "speed bumps" in the cigs. Speed bumps are fire retardents. They put FIRE RETARDENTS in smokes!!! Now how ****ed up is that???? And yet Health Canada pulled this amazing natural hand cream out of our local health store because they had an issue with one of the engredients. :wtf

That fire would have been luck. A smoke go's out pretty quick if you don't keep puffing on it.
As to the ingredient , i asked the owner and she said what it was but i can't remember the name. I do know it was a natural ingredient, nothing out of the ordinary

I'm not for smoking at all, but I think that is going a little far. Banning smoking within the city limits? Come on. Where is it going to stop? It sounds like a futile attempt at prohibition to me. Which didn't work before and won't work now. Especially with all the access we have to everything in the world. Maybe they should ban fast food, or driving to work if you live within the city limits.

Look at the amount of tax the government makes from smokes, then look at the cost of treating cancer patients who were smokers. I doubt the shortfall would be all that significant, if at all.

And as if smoking is Qualicum's biggest concern! lol A Dope grow in every house !

I hate to say it, but smoking is good for the economy. Look at the jobs it creates. The people who make them, pack them, market them etc... the advertising firms who make their living off of smoking ads... vending machine companies who make cigarette vending machines... even the jobs it creates at the hospitals with doctors and nurses, they wouldn't be needed if people weren't sick... the medical companies who make the drugs to treat the people dying.

I hate smoking and I'm proud of this town for banning it, I just can't see it lasting

Actually think how bad smoking is for the economy.
Because we have such income high taxes to cover the health care costs productivity, innovation, and incentive to work are decreased. If each family had $1000 less to pay in tax each year that means they could invest in their money companies and create jobs, buy goods and support business, or travel within the country and support tourism.

Considering we have such an acute shortage of health care professionals already I doubt we would have to lay any off if we had less smokers coming in the hospital.

Remember too that half of the people with lung cancer never smoked according to a report on CBC, but rather lived close to industrial settings or aspestos that contributed to the cancer.

You hit the nail on the head!! Nicely thought out....Smokeing directly or indirectly literally supports our health care system whether we want to beleive it or not. As i've said before, the money generated from cig's. is staggering.

I hear ya Gib, smokeing is Qualicum's least of it's worries.

That`s how it is here. No smoking in any public places. Malls, stores, restaurants, bars, nothing... Not allowed to smoke within I think it`s 30 feet from a door either. Problem is most places don`t enforce the door rule too well so to get in you have to go through a pile of smoke. Worst thing is they`ll sit there under the big no smoking sign puffing away. Normally when I see this I tell them that if they don`t move themselves out of the doorway, I`m going to do it for them. This is normally followed by tons of apologies and excuses how they didn`t realise.

Fear not, they will. And when the social moralist's are done with smokers someone else will pick up the torch and say that any vitamin c over 5 mg. will be illegal like in Britan. Or how about the grumbleing out of Cali. They want to ban creatine because some social moralist feels it is a stepping stone to steroids for highschool kids. They even touched on protien being controlled for the same reason's. Yes our Governments are doing everything in their power to "protect" our precious children. For some reason the most fiscally conservative politicians are always the ones who advocate for the most social control.

Time for us to let people engage in certain activities as long as they are not directly harming others. I have never heard of second hand gyno from dbol, but I do know second hand smoking causes problems.

You forgot roid rage.. Honest mistake..

Numerious studies have proven roid rage, coupled with unbiased coverage from the media the conclusion is obvious. There have even been murder suicides due to testosteron abuse. In fact the evidence was so overwelming that the President of the United States stood up in front of congress to anounce that it was imparitve to put steroids on the controlled substance list. Just ask anyone on the street what their opinion is on steroids and they will give you a very informed and educated answer on just how dangerious it is.....See where i'm going with this??

I'm a non smoker, lets get that clear, i hate it. The point is, when an agenda is to be met you can do anything with studies, graph's, statistic's, what ever. Is smokeing bad for you? Probably, but it's not the whole story. All things being equal i beleive smokers for the most part have a shitty life style, poor eating, drinkers, non phycical, all contributing to their deaths or sickness's. The "studies" and "test's" don't go far enough imo. If they did they might come up with differnt results, and that just won't meet their agenda..

QUESTION EVERYTHING, especially when Governments start telling you the "truth"

I've seen pack a day smokers for 10+ years just one day decide to quit completely, grabbed the patch and they managed to do it. Expensive yes, but it seemed to help them. They still get the cravings but it's all mental toughness. I'm confident that somebody who trains regularly and can live the bodybuilder life style has the mental toughness it takes to quit smoking. It won't be easy, but what in life is? When you decide it's time to quit gustavo, I'm sure you'll be able to.
