View Full Version : Our Dog past last night
Our 3 year old Boxer , ver young for this.
Looking back we see that it started last week with his hind leg . We were just thinking that it was a bad hip joint because they are famous for that. Then his front leg was acting up ( sore to touch ) . We just thought that because his hind leg was messed up he was over compensating with his front ( same side ) and that's what caused this.
So it was getting worst and he was just laying around not moving for food or water, but he would eat if we brought the food to him. He wasn't reacting to the door knocking . Basically just laying around.
When we took him to the Vet on Thursday at 4pm , she checked him over and chalked it up to either a) growing pains or b) inflammation.
She gave him some anti inflammatory drugs and said that if he wasn't better by Friday to bring him in and they would do blood work and give him some steriods. Well he wasn't better Friday , but I thought at least give him the weekend because it might take awhile and then we could bring him in Monday or even Saturday if it was worst.
Friday night my wife called and said that he was BAD. He couldn't move at all ( only his head ) so she phoned the vet ( this was at 12am ) I told her just to wait until the morning when I got home and I would take him in hopefully it's just because he's tired and the medicine was making him sleepy. She took him in anyways ( emergency call ) and he was dead by 2 am .
Very surprising and very fast ! We have been looking up a few things and came up with Canine Degenerative Myelopathy ( basically Multiple sclerosis for dogs ). But the thing that does not make any sense is how fast this happened.
They took his blood to make sure he wasn't poisoned ( which is what we first thought , because we have some ****ed up neighbors ) but the vet ruled that out. His heart and lunges where strong . He was a strong dog , but it got to his brain and he couldn't fight it. The hardest part was watching the kids react to the news.
I still find this weird because it happend so fast. So I'm still doing some research on this to see if anyone has had this happen before.

So sorry to hear about your loss Talo. We have a dog and 2 cats, and I can't fathom losing them. I've had to put a cat down before when he was only 2yrs old, and it was one of the hardest things I've had to endure emotionally.

hey man my heart goes out to u, i know the all too well the pain of losing a pet/friend it hurts more than when a human dies, i watched my dog died as he was injected. the only that will heal u is time and meditation and think to urself,"death is a part of life we will all one day be faced with the same fate" ummm i know of a wonderful boxer breeder or can refer u to the animal shelter where lots of dogs need homes, it might be too early for u to get another dog but i think it might help, maybe foster a dog? i dont know...im just trying to help cause i know how painful it is
my heart goes out to you sir. I've had hearing dogs in my life for over 45 years. Not a days goes by where I didn't miss them...take care my friend.
Thanks for the kind words everyone.
Revolution : Thanks for the offer . I may take you up on that later on , but not yet.
Sorry to hear man, I know how it feels, take care

We had a similar situation few months ago. We had an American Bulldog but he was just over 13 years old. I had a buddy over and Bruzer (our dog) was on the floor and went to get up and he yelped and began to limp, I thought not much of it I checked him over thought maybe just a slight twist. Later that night he was hurting ans it progressed over the next 2 days. He wouldnt get up to eat or go to the washroom, didnt react to the doorbell or when we came down to see him no tail wag. I had to put a towel around his waist to help him walk to go to the can outside and most times when he was on his pad he wouldnt let me try to help him up hed try to nip at me so I knew he must of been in a lot of pain.
The vet came over looked him over said he tore a cruscia ligament in his knee. Because of his age he prolly wont heal but maybe we could put him on pain meds and hed find another way to get around so other muscles could take over so we tried but it didnt help. This was over the course from Thursday to Saturday so we decided Sunday wed put him down....hardest thing ever to decide still brings tears to my eyes. Sat night we spent time with him sharing stories and loving him. I think he knew it was his time he was so calm and could tell we were sad. He couldnt even move....well Sunday morning we wake up go downstairs my wife first, as I go down she says it was nice of me to put him on the couch for the night, I didnt I said, somehow he mustered up the energy to walk over and get up onto the couch, something he hadnt done in well over a year because he knew not too but he sure loved that spot....I think he thought well its my last night here Im going out in style, lol, so that made the whole ordeal a lot easier on us. Vet arrived that morning and put him down peacefully.
But losing a family pet sure hurts.

At least he didn't suffer too long :(
3 months after I had to put my cat down (****, I feel really sad just typing this!!) a stray came running up our stairs!
Had him ever since. :) One day, somehow, you'll bump into another 4 legged friend.
