Edmonton man charged with importing steroids

BY LAURA DRAKE, EDMONTONJOURNAL.COM APRIL 22, 2010

EDMONTON — A 55-year-old Edmonton man has been arrested and charged with importing a controlled substance after border officials intercepted a large volume of steroids they think was destined for his house.

On April 7, Canadian Border Service Agency officials in Vancouver seized 342 vials and 10,000 tablets of steroids. They were sent in a package from Thailand through Vancouver, postmarked to an Edmonton address.

Members of the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams executed a search warrant April 16 at the address on the package, where they seized six rifles, 194 grams of marijuana and 24 tabs of ecstasy.

Norman Jones, 55, has been charged with importation of a controlled substance and possession of ecstasy.

Ordering a large box of steroids from thailand through the port at vancouver.

This is kind of like waving your arms, jumping up and down and screaming arrest me.

umm.... how is that more important than the 6 rifles he has? Kinda ironic dont you think?

I'm not sure there's actually anything wrong with owning 6 rifles other than it being a bit expensive. Personally I think 3 - .22, .306, 12 gauge is a good number but if you don't like switching between open sights and range you might want to have a couple of .22's. Personally shooting seems just about as expensive as golf to me and neither seems like a good way to spend money.

how is he being charged with importation of steroids? canada customs has the package, not him. for all they know someone could of sent a package to his house as a bad tasting joke.

i cant see them getting him on importation when they hold the package, and not him.

after border officials intercepted a large volume of steroids they think was destined for his house.

I seriously hope the law in Canada doesn't work on presumptions but instead on hard evidence. If the charge is "they think" then any lawyer worth his salt can fight the charge. Beyond a reasonable doubt is what our law is based on. Not I think you committed a crime therefore you should go to jail. With a controlled delivery it would have been an open and shut case if the package was accepted. With what they did, someone could order steroids overseas and send it to the head of the RCMP and have him arrested and charged under the same circumstances.

Any judge with half a brain will acquit him. If the rifles were registered, then no charge there. For the ecstasy and weed, he could only get charged with possession as it doesn't seem there is enough for anything more. What a waste of time and taxpayers money. Unless there is more than what we know from the news. Flagged addy multiple times? Could be he ordered before and got seized then ordered again and they send in the boys in blue.

It's called a controlled delivery. It is generally accompanied by a search warrant, a gang of armed thugs, dogs, rifles, both customs and local police and if you are especially lucky a couple of local television cameras.

Everyone's a tough guy when it's someone elses problem. Keep in mind that 99.9% of the internet tough guys here will roll over with no second thoughts.

Steroid users as a group are not your average nothing to lose criminal. They have jobs, lives, wives, and homes. Most are the antithesis of the tough guy they pretend to be. On the boards it's even worse as many are kids or just barely men.

On the whole aas aren't seen as the threat to society that narcotics are and generally don't seem to be actively pursued unless company's like Glaxo-Kline or others are on the war path about patent infringement and pay a politician to make a stink.

That said most people who are arrested will do whatever is in their best interest. If you are too naive to recognize that then you may be in for a surprise one day.

Personally I find the best solution is simple not to put yourself in harms way.
