View Full Version : Natural melatonine Supression
Ive been using melatonin for 8 month. I used 1mg a day the first 2 month, and then 3 mg for the 6 remaining months. I stopped 2 days ago and replaced my melatonin with 200mg of 5-htp and ZMA.
My sleep is no-where near as good as before, is it because my natural melatonine production is suppressed, what can i do to fix this. Is 5-htp the only pct for melatonine production?

I don't think your natural melatonin is suppressed. I never heard of melatonin stopping your natural production. Plus for the past 2 years, I have been using twinlab melatonin almost every night and sometimes at 9 mgs a day and stopped using it in February when I ran out. And my sleep was not affected at all although I was never a heavy sleeper to begin with.
Its very possible that you did have trouble sleeping prior to using melatonin and melatonin helped you sleep. And right now you went off it again and are having trouble once again.
Plus 5-htp does not help with melatonin production at all. 5-htp is responsible for seratonin production which calms you down and helps you sleep at night , but not in the same way as melatonin. Try taking some valerian root instead. I find valerian works much better than 5-htp and does have any side effects.
The precursor to melatonin is serotonin, a neurotransmitter that itself is derived from the amino acid tryptophan. Within the pineal gland, serotonin is acetylated and then methylated to yield melatonin
5-htp is a precursor of serotonin, a direct correlation between the 2 can be observed.

Its interesting to see that ZMA is needed to transform 5-htp into serotonin.
If anybody had information about the link between SAMe and Melatonin please let me know.

I work shift work and when I am on a night shift week, i find it hard to get a good sleep during the day and don't feel rested when I wake up. Will taking Melatonin help with sleeping during the day and would there be any negative side effects?
I don't really know much about it and the effects its has.
i believe you will get better sleep, but you might not be able to sleep at night without it.

I know its been sed numerous times but i prefer gaba over melatonin to calm me down before bed. No matter what you take if your dieting or a light sleeper your going to wake up. Just deal with it. I take prescription sleep meds if it gets to bad and even then its my mind i must shut off to relax and then the sleep just comes.
