I live nearby to a great Ymca, walking distance actually. They got a gym that's over 6000 square feet. What do you guys think of the Y as a gym? Anyone else here a member of one in their city? I train at home but would love to go train in public. They charge $42.00 a month, which is within my budget which is a great plus as well.
So let the raves and rants fly folks, convince me. Thank you. :hu

Agree with Freeze 100%.
The Y in your city there is great for getting the job done. There's 2 actually. One is great for eye candy and i'm sure you can guess which.
Take a tour there or get a day pass and see how you find it or if it's what you're looking for.

I train at a Y. Its pretty good. Gets a little busy and some of the people are far to pretty to even break a sweat, but being that its a five min walk from were I live I can bite my tounge.

The Y here was just rebuilt a few years back. HUGE gym, all brand new equipment... the problem was they were all machines. They had a section of free weights about the size of my kitchen with a rack of dumbells up to 80lbs, an adjustable bench, a flat bench, and an incline bench..... that's it. Being able to swim laps in the pool then sit in the hot tub after training felt incredible though! I was going to the gym at around 6pm, and getting home at 9:30 hahaha

Words to live by , i also used to train at the y , good equipment but suddenly the place is a haven for little gangstá kids who would rather try to look cool than train so they immediately lost my buisness , just my exp. tho

Thank you for all the replies. I will try the day pass and see how it goes. I do remember the "lil gansta" kids from my high school days. The weight room was full of them, tough guys walking around with 20 lbs dumbbells in each hand LOL!

UPDATE: Looks like my choice will be more difficult than I thought. I discovered a great gym called Premier Fitness on Bath Road and they offer a monthly payments option: a big plus for me. 65000 sq/ft and a great free weight area, much better than the Y. I like the canteen area of Premier as well, gonna be fun bringing in my supplements and mixing them in front of those wannabe trainees lifting 10 lbs dumbbells :-)

The only thing i hated about the Y was all the kids running around. Most fitness and health clubs have age restrictions keeping out a large percentage of that riff raff. Most of the people aren;t really too serious about fitness leading one to either be a) motivated because they are huge or b) discouraged because everyone else is fat. I like working out at places where there are a lot of bigger guys (and fit girls) because they provide me with more motivation.
I Like the Y because it is non-profit and well funded. If you are a student or pull in a low income they will reduce your dues. They are there to promote a healthy life style not to suck your wallet dry. Ys tend to be well staffed and funded leading to a cleaner, more easy going atmosphere.

That's what is making my decision so hard now. I love the Y near me, looks like a great place. Hmmmm.

I was definitely not happy with the Y in my city,it was small, the selection of free weights were minimal, they were lacking in two essential pieces of equipment that i wanted to help build calves and hamstrings, and with it being so small, when it got busy, you had to wait to use certain machines,or free weights.
I'm definitely looking for a new gym that's not too expensive, and has the things that i need to use available to train, and has a monthly payment plan.
Well.. the Y is supposed to be for kids so I guess that explain the ''kids running around", but yeah.
What I find annoying about the Y is that they are constantly shuffling around the free weights etc while they perpetually renovate the place. When it comes to the Y, they really don't care about people that weight train. In my opinion, the ymca treats weight trainers types as second class members, inconveniencing them the most when consolations have to be made.

My brother and his buddies workout at Progress Fitness...ever heard of it? I can't tell you much about it because I have never been there. I moved out of Kingston 8 years ago, but grew up there and my whole family is still there.

They just spent an incredible amount of money on machines in my local Y. It's very pretty.
