View Full Version : Barbell curls in a cage..

yes, another one ... but that blew my mind today
Today I am training back.. starting off with deadlifts..
I am pumped, psyched to walk in there and rip the weight off that stupid floor.. ( one of the real good days.. !!)
Run in there and there are two cages, that gym is pretty damm big and not crowded at all.. TONS OF ROOM to work your biceps..
Two "falmboyant middle aged men" with toothpick legs and decent arms haning out and doing 21 ns ... with a barbell and a couple pounds.
I ask how many sets and I get" 2 more, you want me to call you when we are done??"
Ok, he wasnt rude, neither was I... but the fact that he nicely refused to work in with his buddy or BF or do his ****ing arm curls some other stupid place just pissed me off..
I warmed up properly and evt. got in without having to make a scene..
OK, so WTF>> This is a squat rack.. WHAT DO IDIOTS EVEN THINK WHEN THEY OCCUPY TWO SQUAT RACKS TO DO 21?? and especially as a pair , synchronized???
Stupid people, stupid gym

Well, no I wouldn't think it does. But I've seen guys doing it. I'm glad you're not one of them.
Sure, you're already there... may as well, long as no one else needs it for squats or something.

No other gyms you can go to in the area?

No other gyms you can go to in the area?
well, this gym is 2 blocks away, open late enough and has all the shit I need..but the crowd is quite bad. having that said, due to my job, I often dont get there before 9-10 pm.
today I got there earlier then usually I guess.. therefore the sausage fest.
to my options:
community center: crowded, lack of sufficient squat racks, room to deadlift etc...
Fitness World: No comment, only plus would be that I have friends who work out there
Other options around my work are being looked in, but most appear like health clubs ( fancy Downtown gyms..) and not the place where I can train the way I like.
Believe there is Pantheon that I might check out....

ok I admit I sometimes do barbell curls in the cage. but there are 2 cages, a squat rack and a smith at my gym, and the only other olympic bars are on the bench equipment.
what annoys me is when all the cages/racks are in use, and one of them has some idiot doing crunches on a mat in the middle of it. like why do you need to be surrounded by that cage to do your 'core workout'?

I agree with your logic about not occupying the squat racks for curls...But what about you using it for deadlifts when the next guy wants to do squats?
I never do deadlifts in the cage. Now, this might be a different story if you are doing deadlifts with bands, and need the rack to attach the bands to the deadlifts...But was this the case? Perhaps your gym is setup different than mine, but I set up deadlifts anywhere with room enough for a bar. At my gym, there is a decent spot near the racks, and I am not really in anyones way.

Ah Nate, you have no idea how funny the line "your done" is to me. My sister was training at an all womans`gym (only because it was near her work to go during her lunch hours) and there`s this butch lesbian there who likes to think she`s the boss of the place.
My sister told me something about her going up to another member asking is she`s still using the mahine or whatever. I guess she didn`t want to wait, and she said in a commanding voice " YOU`RE DONE!"
Are you a man trapped in a lesbians body? (a jacked up body that would be)

Our gym only has two cages, so it's really frustrating when people do curls in them. It's one thing if you're able to curl more than 100 pounds, but when it's 65 pounds, I find it really irritating. There are racks of barbells for <100lbs usage, so take those instead... or just use an EZ-curl bar instead. If you can curl more your gym's barbells for reps and nobody else is using the racks, then be my guest.

LOL, i curl in the damn cage...But i curl what some nerds in my gym squat so it equals out....
Id be very surprised to ever see someone "TELL" me to move when curling, They would be even more surprised at the response i would give them if they "TOLD" me to move... I do it because i enjoy curling in there, i set it up at waist height and go up to a 45 and 35 per side at my max, so i dont like bending down to pick it up because im a lazy bastard!!!...
Of course im always open for polite discussion and would move in a heartbeat if a person needed it and was respectfull in his approach, if not....FUNTIME for me, if i saw someone being a dick, or blowing a fuse, id probably even slow down and do some stretching in the rack as well for a spell....
Yes im that guy....:)

Well to all you cage curlers... What you`re doing here is having others think "If he can curl in the cage, then so can I" They don`t understand the fact that when you get to a certain weight that "It`s acceptable to do so" although I respectfully disagree with that.
All they think is if he`s doing it, so can I and will make for people curling in the cage. So in the end you`re just screwing yourself because on day you will want to use it for its`intended purpose to arrive there with some goofballs doing curls.
And please, don`t think because you`re jacked that means shit in terms of intimidating them out of there. Stupid ass kids these days do whatever the **** they please. And your 21 inch guns have little or no authority on them.

it's not about being acceptable. Surely if someone wanted to do squats or OH presses then I'd happily move but I also train arms during non-business time periods (friday or saturday) so it's not like the racks are in use anyway lol
Using the rack for curls, as IW, said is just a bit easier and the term is work smarter... not harder :D
But for the little punks. I'll happily set their ass straight if I see them doing it and when they call me on it (doubtful as they be chiken shits) I'll explain to them when they've put on 100lbs and can squat over 135lbs, bench more than 135lbs and can curl more than 35lbs then they, too, are free to use the squat rack for curls but until then, stick to the bosu ball. It's better for stability anyway :yeah

Kinda difficult but possible to find a quiet, roomy spot in the gym.. the squat rack is perfectly in a corner..
I'd give it up if someone actually was doing squats..but not for two hobos curling 65 pounds for 21's..
You should have seen that picture, makes me laugh now..
Squat racks are for squats... yeah, but I rather have two hobos move their bar then me carry 300-400 pounds across the gym..and back after that, lol

Yeah, dont know the stats but I would bet that excluding the cardio area ( which I cant really see) the stats are way higher.
As I said, I go at night and it isn;t that bad.
Going earlier is rough and Saturdays is just busy and loaded with gay's.
If I go late on Friday night, I sometimes catch men in their club outfits getting a pump and stuff which is funny yet sad to watch.
I should stop complaining since I have been a member for a bit now... just hard to trade a five min commute with a 30 min commute ( 1 way)...
All is good unless they hit on me, kiss each other, start huggin each other or any other gay stuff I really dont want to see when I am squatting etc..

Well it sounds like alot but at 285lbs its only 10lbs over bodyweight....so its really not that impressive....and they werent super strict...but a decent curl either way....I am paying for it now though...too much stress on the tendon and doing heavy olympic bar curls for years had lead to chronic issues resulting in two torn bicep tendons....I wouldnt recommend straight bar to anyone anymore...use the eazy curl...much safer. Did my share of ego training when i was young....no more.

The 4 racks and lifting platforms at my gym take up at least a 3rd of the free weight area of my gym. When there is no one using any of them I don't see why that is terrible gym etiquette. Don't get me wrong as I already said if the racks are being used I will find somewhere else.

I can't wait to use the '5 MINS' comment on someone. Go in looking like there's gonna be a come to jesus meeting and tell some twirpy dickwad that he has 5 MIN and his shit better be gone when I come back :D
I actually applied the 5 min rule this week. I wanted the incline bench and there was a towel on it. Fine, so I waited 5 minutes when I took the towel off, this guy who was talking on his phone in the corner appeared out of nowhere, took his towel and carried on with his business. 5 minutes is very reasonable.
ummm?
is that a typo?
I think he means 295lbs dumbbells...
To the guy with the MMA tap out shirt...I wear Ghost Buster shirt...:friday
