View Full Version : fish intake?
so ive been hitting the fish hard latley, talapia, salmon, and tuna
lots and lots of tuna, maybe 4-6 cans a day
should i be worried about mercury etc?
thanks!
I wouldn't worry about it too much if you're eating skipjack. Albacore on the other hand has pretty high levels of mercury b/c of the monstrous size of the fish. However, if your gums start to bleed and your teeth fall out you might want to cut back a bit. :greet

eat the light tuna and not the white tuna and you will be fine, like pdh said the light tuna is from either skipjack or yellowfin tuna, which are small and relatively young, white tuna is from albacore which are huge and about 20 years old when fished. As well i would try and eat more fresh or frozen than canned fish. The canning process is hard on the nutrient value of food. I buy those pre cut frozen 100g wild salmon fillets and just cook a bunch at the start and middle of the week. Covers your omega 3's to.

What do the asteriks represent in PdH's post?
Canned tuna after a while made me feel like shit, even @ 2-3 cans day.

* Fish in Trouble! These fish are perilously low in numbers or are caught using environmentally destructive methods. To learn more, see the Monterey Bay Aquarium and the Blue Ocean Institute, both of which provide guides to fish to enjoy or avoid on the basis of environmental factors.
** Farmed Salmon may contain PCB's, chemicals with serious long-term health effects.
I only eat sardines, basa and occasional salmond. I am so worried about mercury.

there is a lot of conjecture about the fish issue right now... from the data ive seen the body seems to be self regulating in the storage of mercury, so although mercury levels do increase initially from increased fish intake they tend to level off of the body just increases its excretion rates
if you are worried though u can always have these levels tested quite easily

49 cents at shoppers from time to time, and on a 20x the points weekend, if you do the math, it worked out to about 30 cents a can. let's just say I have alot of tuna at my house. I used to eat 4-5 cans a day, but lately its 1-2 max. I probably had some sort of poisoning, even if I didn't, i'd rather be safe than sorry...I eat about 3-4 cans a week now
