View Full Version : I can no longer get a pump from a workout...
I am BARELY achieving any kind of muscle "pump" from my workouts. Keep in mind i drink excessively about 2-3 times a week and my diet is pretty terrible and has been for a while.
I realize I am my own worst enemy but I dont see how a drinking / bad diet combo is effecting my body's ability to transport blood to the muscle. I do tend to do relatively low reps with higher weight as I have been building strength and size for the entire winter coupled with a massive calorie surplus, but even when I switch it up to higher reps for the pump, there is no difference.
Whats going on?
FYI I am quitting drinking for the summer once I start londonmuscle's diet program.

Odd, while I stopped trying to get a pump a long time ago and rarely get any sort of pump during my workout that you can't manage to do it on purpose is kind of surprising.
On the drinking/eating issue. The best path to success is to start today.
I also try to limit the pump I get...
It's not a good thing , just makes you feel bigger.
But anytime I train my arms I get one or if I switch over to higher reps .
So why do you want one ?

I'm not sure how you try not to get a pump, I don't try or try not either way ..it just happens.
Is it possible that maybe the unhealthy diet has lead to your physique flattening out a bit and the pump just isn't as noticable?? Other than that .. not sure why it would stop all of a sudden.

I dunno why anyone would not want the pump. I love it. Makes me feel bigger for a little while, and gives me something to aspire towards. Always chasing the pump (size).
#8, lose the booze, fix your diet, and start some creatine or a pre-workout mix.. you'll get some pump. Or maybe you heart just isn't in it and you're not connecting to your muscles when you lift? Could very well be, since you're doing so much other stuff that's counter-productive. I can't see how anyone would want to do that and still try to train.

I'm with him on this one. Pump is fantastic... does wonders for my motivation.

Makes you feel bigger , but the LA prevents you from getting the most from your workout .
So why your feeling bigger , we are getting bigger.

lol, bro science at it's finest. If that makes you feel better about your workouts, so be it. However, Arnold must've been a skinny ****er....
I'll also add, your post is full of assumptions. Not only is it implying that we're only achieving pump from doing high reps (as that would cause an excessive amount of lactic acid), but you're also assuming we're not getting bigger. Doesn't exactly come across as a very informed post.

Just going by what I do and what I have noticed in my own training.
Lower reps = less LA and my size and strength have gone through the roof.
High reps = More LA - That is the way it is , want proof I will go digging for you.

The reason a person takes supplements like BA is to reduce prevent the lactic build up for as long as possible , because with the LA you have to stop.
I forgot that your a Monster and know the proper way of training.
Dude, all I'm saying is that you were assuming we're doing high reps to achieve pump, and as you just said, you're basing that on your own experience.
So isn't it logical to admit that you can't surmise a conclusion only based on your own personal experience? I don't do high rep workouts, yet I still achieve pump and I do grow.
I totally agree with you that lower reps, higher weight results in bigger gains both in size and strength. I wouldn't dispute that, it's a well documented fact. I also know that too much lactic acid build up can reduce proficiency in a workout. But to avoid pump altogether purposely just does not make the least bit of sense. You want pump. That means blood, oxygen, nitrogen, etc is filling your muscles... isn't that the whole point?
I'm not a monster, but I have learned what works really well for me this past year of fine tuning. As you post from your experience, I do the same... but at least I'm trying to remain neutral and not telling you your workouts suck and you don't know what you're doing. We're all different man.

If I get to a day where I can't get a pump I'll quit bodybuilding and just play my guitar. For me not being able to get a pump means over training and I haven't done that in years. I can get a kiler pump whenever I want. No gear, no creatine.
LOL - you got me before I edited.

I was always under the impression that LA was the waste product that your muscles make while under stress/strain ( long periods) everyone is different and has different levels. Mine is low and that is due to the way I train ( shit , over 5 reps on the major lifts is endurance training for me , lol ) . I find it very hard to beleive that you will get the "pump" if your working under the 5 rep range in any exercise.
Look at some olympic athletes ( speed skaters for example) , they can skate 1500-3000 m and prob wont get the build up until that last few laps .
This is the reason we take supplements like Beta Al , to increase the ATP and help us go further without the LA build up or atleast help pro-long it.

Yeah man, no argument there. Under 5 reps, I barely get any pump. My routine is kinda complicated though. Despite having some exercises with 8-12 as the rep range, for me it's not too high that there's too much lactic acid. I know the feeling when it's gets too much, and I think the way some people train they're likely doing way too much and are being counter-productive.
I tried the strength training on it's own, but I wasn't enjoying it. I find mixing a 5x5 style with reverse pyramid and 12-10-8 or 10-8-6 gives me the best of both worlds so I still enjoy myself, but at the same time have made steady gains in both strength and size.
To my knowledge, lactic acid is the burn, not the pump. As long as the burn doesn't get too prolonged, it's fine.. all depends on the individual.

Umm... I don't personally think the drinking and poor diet are exactly the culprit.
In my experience I've seen lots of guy who drink a few nights a week and eat terribly and can get strong as a bull. Think of college football players for example, or just about anyone I know in the military.
If you want to really look good, well you're shooting yourself in the foot, but if you're just looking to get stronger, it's really not the worst thing ever, I've had some of my best workouts ever hung over and recently saw my buddy squat a PR 2.5kilos off the world record at a meet when we were out the night before and he got kicked out for puking in the bathroom.
If you're not getting a pump, watch your hydration levels first and foremost as booze can dry you out, and I think is also the reason why a lot of low carb dieters find it hard to get a pump... just no water weight, and when you think about it, why abombs and dbol give such massive pumps... lots of water weight.
After that, before your next workout drink a gallon of chocolate milk, and eat a bunch of donuts from Tim Hortons and some other sweets... I've done it before for a pretty sweet pump.

interesting eclectic group of posts so far. im pretty drunk right now, but i appreciate the feedback.
it most likely is a hydration issue. i try to stay on top of water intake, but with long lectures and constant thirst, it becomes annoying.

I read your post and it's the same for me, beyond the 5 reps, I can't get a great pump..Even, no pumps!
Since, I'm on a med carbs diets and I drink more water during my workout and now, that's gatorade( The first time i took this in my workout, I was really impress how simples carbs improve the pumps intraworkout)!
I work like that for coumpound exercice= 20/15/BF
BF=6-8 reps/10sec rest/max/10sec rest/max/10sec/max-20%
The pump Is really fantastic and I find that between the 8-15 reps, I have the best pump and of course, I connect my mind into my muscles and worked really well for me!..I always have a great pump!:)

Who cares what Arnold said or did? Read his Novice, Intermediate and Advanced training programs in his BB Encyclopedia. Very few could train that way.
The majority of what Arnold did and said is not applicable to the most of us. 1) We're not that genetically gifted; 2) Have jobs and lives that do not allow us to train and rest like he was able to.

Actually lactic acid is what triggers the growth hormone surge in the body post workout, so it has its good points also, I think it would be detrimental more so to endurance athletes than strength trainers.
