So since last summer I got interested in motorcycles and really wanted to buy one, I shoped around for a little while and found a few good deals, i really liked the Honda crb 600, and the Suzuki gsx-600, the sit really low and comfortable.
I saved up enough cash and was ready to buy my first bike, until i got a phone call, and found that my cousin just got in a accident on his motorcycle and died, he hit a median on a highway broke every bone in his body and died instantly. Now the reason why that happened was because he was prob flying on his bike or doing something else stupid.

So I found that to be a sign I guess and just bought a car, now this summer is right around the corner and it's already starting to get warm. And i find it depressing to drive a box with tires when it's 80 outside. http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-confused001.gif (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php)And i want one now even more, even if I have to sell my car. If not i'll just have to keep on dreaming of owning one.

How many of u guys own a motorcycle, or have experience with motorcycles?

Sorry about your cousin dude, must have been hard on your family :(

Im for sure selling my car this summer and owning just a bike. My work commutes are brutal and the bike is cheaper on gas and insurance. I live so close to school I just ride my bicycle all winter.

Motorcycles are more fun than sex. Hot girls on motorcycles is probably the hottest thing in the entire world. I love seeing a girl riding a sport bike with her pony tail sticking out of her helmet. It drives me INSANE.

Yup yup... I would never just own a bike.. you have to have some sort of transportation in the winter.. and trust me January 1st drives for some poontang from the woman aren't fun! ..been there done that.. :)

anyhow... this is how I see it.. Everybody is at risk of dieing no matter what/where/when 24/7 365. A car is just as bad! Think of how many other thousands of drivers you pass each day on the highway going 110km/h, in opposite directions, with only a foot between your mirrors.

There's definitely something to say about that certain type of freedom/enjoyment a bike gives. Not to mention the community you join.. always with arms wide open. No matter where you ride or who ya know, you're always welcomed to join along a cruise or a table for a meal/drink.

Obviously, this isn't gonna assist your situation and probably just make you more depressed.. for that I apologize.. but it is what you asked.

Keep your chin up!

I got real tired of people trying to kill me on my bike after a couple of seasons of commuting to work. A bike is great for highway cruising but absolutely sucks in commuting traffic. Dodging bullets gets darn tiresome. If I ever get another bike it will be a highway cruiser and I'll use it for touring.

Sorry to hear about your cousin mate. Theres something about an engine between your legs that hits 20K rpm that makes you do some pretty stupid things, regardless of how responsible you are. You wont stop wanting one though, i say get own one atleast once in ur life, and do it while ur young and ur back can take it hehe.

Most people think that, until they finally own one. You go through gas like no ones business. And as for insurance, are you out of your mind :moon

I found its just not feasible to own a bike in canada unless its your life.

Ill eat my words then, but generally its rather expensive. Once you've past 30, then you're ok, but sport bikes come with a nice premium. I sure miss her though.

My experience:

It really is true that bikes are dangerous. Not only because it's hard not to ride really fast, but because other people don't see you on the road, they will try to kill you.

Also, I wouldn't get something you're not prepared to drop a few times. If I did it again I'd get something with some light fairing damage (and save major $$$$$$$$$).

On the positive side, I've never had more fun than on my bike.

I always hear that about insurance from you guys on here^^ ... here in NS, car insurance is ridiculous! but bikes... couple hundred bucks a year and you're set. Gotta assume it's different in the other provinces!?

I was getting quotes for a CBR 600 in ontario for $7000 a year.

Car insurance is alot aswell.

High speed sillyness is for squids. You should check out To's local stunt team, they do plenty of events during the summer; and if u have the experience, have some fun terrorizing local PDs with them.

I've been riding for 6 years.

I've had 2 R6's, an R1, and 2 CBR600RR's. The Honda was the best, and 600cc was more than enough for me. I don't know why you would need more power, unless you are doing a lot of highway commuting. In the city the R1 is just suicide.

Take a rider's course and educate yourself well before jumping on a bike. Always remember to wear all your gear. Even if it's 30 degrees outside. Don't be like those idiots I see riding around in shorts, wife beater, and sandals. Gear will save your life.

I've had one motorcycle accident that put me in the hospital. That happened 2 months after I started riding. I also had more close calls than I can count. And I've known people that died or came real close. My gf's sister's boyfriend got cut off by an SUV making a left turn last summer. Shattered every bone in his body and ruptured his aorta. This happened 1 min from a hospital, otherwise he'd be dead now. He's 18 and will be disabled for the rest of his life.

The people saying "everyone dies sometime" are damn right stupid. Riding a motorcycle involves significant risk and if that's your attitude, then god help you.

Remember that not every one who gets in a motorcycle accident dies - I'll bet they'd be singing a different tune if they got hit and were forced to live out the rest of their life in a wheel chair.

Be careful dude. They are fun, but it's no joke. Take it from me, hitting a car and flying/flipping 30 feet in the air and hitting the ground HARD really makes you re-evaluate what's important in life.

^^ good post.

im gonna watch two straight days worth of motorcycle accident videos before i start riding mine. they are riskier, but if you are hyper aware of your surroundings, wear your gear, and dont ride like an asshole then you can greatly improve your odds of surviving your bike intact.

good post though PW

Of course if you dont know how to ride you should look at a course. Myself i dont even know how to start one, but there is a great course at NAIT in the summers that teach you everything you need to know mostly. I will be signing up for that before I go jump on a bike to drive it and not sure if I will get a speed bike at all cause i speed in my car so i more the likely would kill myself on a speed bike hehehe plus I love harleys.

But I also have seen way to much in life not to want to live it like everyday is my last day alive. If your not having fun, doing what you want to do, then why do anything at all???? life is short, make it what you want.

I just wanna rock the Harley race jacket on an R-1, and watch the Harley owners cringe.
