So me and my training partner are doing legs and were finishing up squats, when a younger gym rat (21 years old) comes up to us and starts talking about training. This idiot kid states, "that protein powders and omega 3s are bs, and a waste of money." He also states that he is going to school for excercise science or some other fitness related course. My buddy decides to question him on his knowledge about training and nutrition. Me being reserved and polite I decide to walk away for a sip of water. When I come back, my training partner and kid are yelling at each other. I guess the kid told my buddy that he was stronger then my buddy, and told him he knew more about training! WTF!

I guess the kid got scared and told the staff, so we had 3 workers hovering around us the remaining workout time, just incase of a fight.

I feel that people who dont know much should keep their mouth shut, especialy the young guys, who need directions. Pisses me off when ignorant people talk BS.

Now here's an interesting question for you. What if he were right and...

A) Protein powders are essentially a waste of money and the protein is best and adequately gotten from a good diet.

B) Omega 3's actually are just hype and even if they are a tiny little bit good in reality they are a complete waste of money and in the end you should probably just manage your diet better with salmon and lots of veg.

What if we are actually simply being brainwashed by the supplement companies and we could put on the exact same amount of muscle and strength just by eating properly, training and sleeping well?

****ing drooling mongoloids.

sort of right, but when you need in excess of 300g or protein a day, it could be a little bit of pain getting it from diet.

Im not personaly against shakes. I use casein protein a lot during the day with my oats 1 cup in it and it is an excellent meal. Do i want to eat steak and chicken YES. but in a month thats an extra 60 or 70 chicken or steak (with chicken thats like 100-200 bucks.) protein for the month 50 bucks TS. so i opt for 1-2 meals from shakes because im not rich.

Solution:

Lifting competition. Whoever drops the weight on themselves and dies first loses.

solution 2:

Get strong/big enough that no 21 year old would even think that they were stronger than you, or think they know more about lifting than you.

In school some of the profs teach how bad high protein diets are ie more than a gram per kg of body weight. In one of my classes he said the next time you see someone drinking a protein shake think about what negative things they are doing to their body. Allot of students believe this bs so I could see where he is getting his wrong info from.

I would not say omega 3's are hype. They used to be found in all forms of meat, but with the switch to grain feeding about a century ago they have rapidly disappeared from the North American diet. Reason that farmers grain feed is because you can get a steer to market in a year whereas purely grass fed takes about 2 years.

However a wise words of Alladin Sane are "Supplements are just that. Something to supplement a proper diet."

yep,12 years ago now, I remember the big essay on our final exam in nutrition in university:

explain the negatives of eating too much protein in your diet (ie, over 1 g per kg).

Can you imagine? I got 100% on the question, but I felt bad for writing everything I didn't believe in.

I use whey protein isolate and fish oil. I also consume protein @ 1.5-2 grams per pound of body weight.

I don't think either are hype but in truth I could be wrong.

The rda of 1g/kg of body weight is like any other rda. Minimum maintenance but even with aas 1g/pound might very well be enough. I'm almost assuredly using protein as a fuel source during the offseason but on the other had I find it helps with satiety and controlling my caloric intake. Sadly I can consume an almost unlimited volume of carbs without the switch in my head saying enough.

The omega 3/6 imbalance in our diet is pretty strongly documented. The debate is whether a 1:1 or 1:2 or some other ratio is still open.

... and the same goes for vitamin d for us igloo dwellers. Supplementation is reasonable but how much?

Going back to the question of adding muscle. Other than insuring sufficient protein in the diet, which is likely much less than most of us consume, would any of these thing actually impact muscle and how much? 1%? less/more?

The only thing I'm certain that actually impacts muscle synthesis so far is the shit I stick in my ass, the food I eat, and how much I can lift.

are you bipolar?

are you bipolar?

Nope but sometimes it's fun to look at the big picture instead of fussing the details.

I like to fuss the details, it's part of my hobby. I enjoy the process as much or more than the result. But did it gain me any muscle or was it just passing time while another year of lifting and eating went by? Often it's just mental masturbation.

The big stuff that has really helped me has been eating more, learning how to train effectively, and testosterone.

Stuff I need to learn is how to eat less and still put on as much or more muscle, bring up my big lifts, and avoid acne.

Now I think I'll go mix myself up a protein shake. cheers :)

Part 2: Early this afternoon I had a chance to talk in depth, with my training partner about the little chat he had with the kid yesterday, before heading to the gym for our chest workout.

I know this is hearsay, but my buddy told me that the kid claimed that he gained 17 pounds of muscle in 3 weeks! He also claimed you can train chest heavy 2 days in a row and still grow! Those comments along with protein powders/omega 3s dont work. The last straw was "I am stronger than you" part. (For the record this kid is no genetic freak or is currently using AASs)

This type of talk is nothing but a inexperinced gym rat trying to be the "alpha male" around two experienced gym rats.

Every pound of muscle we have gained has been through proper diet, proper training, guidance from other seasoned bodybuilders, research and trial and error. (Lest we forget the J)

My training partner is 30 years old and most of the time he acts his age. Not yesterday. He was so eager on proving his strentgh, that he busted out the the barbell and started deadlifting heavy! He worked his way up to 500 pounds for 5 reps with no belt or chalk or straps. He tried a single with 600 but couldint lock out.

Some of us do immature things just to prove our point. He made it clear and "very loud" that he was stronger then some 21 year old kid.

why waste your time and effort even giving the kid a second thought.
This kid is nothing to you and whatever he thinks or believes has no relevence on you or your buddy.
Unless hes asking you for advice, theres no need to debate with him your beliefs over his.
Just tell him 'hey im working out here, would you mind not interrupting me?' instead of all the chest pounding.
Grow up.

How come there is zero tolerance regarding racism but thread titles are allowed to have derogatory references regarding people with Down Syndrome? Especially when it makes no sense given the topic.

I think the title was meant to be clever but it came off, rather ironically, as completely retarded.

Victor, it’s not a crime ranting about some idiot talking BS but your choice of wording could be better.
For many years I was a volunteer big brother to a young boy who suffered from Down syndrome (DS) which is a condition due to a chromosome abnormality. This young boy was the happiest, kindest, and most gentle human being I have ever met. I was very fortunate to have him as a young brother. Even when people made fun of his strange appearance, he approached everyone with unconditional love. Hence, the word mongoloid is too good to describe an idiot. I myself have several serious disabilities including deafness, deformities that made my appearance hideous. I think we (people with disabilities) could do without the offensive revolting remark. I write this not to offend but to educate, so pls don’t take this the wrong way. Thank you.

I think the dumb thing was that it was used in the title... if it were stuffed into the middle of the first post, no one woulda noticed...

what transpired for wade leaving was being around so-called liberals which he couldn't stand and he felt it was perfectly acceptable to make racial slurs.

What transpired for Kloan leaving is having people tell him the things he didn't want to hear and only be fed info and advice that was already inline with his thinking/what he was hoping to hear.

Wade was a good guy whom had strong opinions which comes from a belief in yourself.

Kloan is not here to defend himself so I won't say what he is/was as that wouldn't be fair but the 2 situations were vastly different.
