im looking for thoughts of experienced competitors/dieters on what they think of using beans (black beans/kidney beans etc) as a carb source while trying to get lean. normally for carbs i eat rice/oats/yam/potato but was looking through some old diet i had got from a well known guy who left a side note saying beans could be replaced for rice on a 1:1 ratio (1 cup of either)...

and, if the beans are ok, is there any reason you couldnt or shouldnt eat 1/2 beans and 1/2 rice?

thanks

ps- obviously the beans arent in sauce or syrup

I'm a big proponent of this view, but I'm hardly an expert or competitor. I am a grain-less bodybuilder myself, so beans are of utmost importance to me. The high fiber and nutrient content is really useful in comparison to white starch. The only intentional carbs I consume (excluding Gatorade powder and dextrose) are beans and vegetables. For someone looking to go less hardcore, I would think a combination of beans and rice to be fantastic (and cheap!) to say nothing of the fact that they form complete protein together and taste delicious.

Aaron you dont use carb sources liek rice, potatoes, oats at all in prep. That is definatly a diff point of view and its working for you and very intesting. I always wondered if beans could be considered a carb while dieting. Not to stray from the topic but without solid carbs besides bean do you have extreme feelings of hunger?

Good question. I have my own answer but since I`m not a qualified prep coach I`ll keep it to myself...

Oh I know that re prep. The post doesn't exactly specify much more than "trying to get lean." I figured my 0.02 would still be worth 0.02 for general purposes.

With respect to me... no, never hungry. This unique perspective of mine is nothing compared to the Velocity Diet... :D That was a challenge for sure!

let me specify. im not some fat guy trying to drop a few lbs. im quite serious and diet down every year for a good 5-6 months and reach great but never amazing shape. when i say get lean i mean semi contest shape. 6% bf ish.

i follow an older version of scott abels cycle diet, ive just never used beans and wanted some feedback.

rich id appreciate your input or anyone elses who is experienced. i was just trying to avoid the "beans are carbs and carbs make you fat" idiot statements

thanks again

Interesting... I'm a big fan of chick peas, black beans, kidney beans (white and red).
The paleo guys seem to have something against legumes but I wonder if this isn't a wonderful idea.... hm.

I`ve never used beans to get lean as I don`t know any ways to make them taste good other than chili and I tend to stay away from chili when cutting. Beans are low glycemic and full of fiber, so I don`t see how they could be a bad food choice. But I`m guessing you already knew that...

My buddy is using beans in his cutting diet, and is having amazing results. Hes quite modest but i think he looks the best he ever has.

Beans are great for keeping family and friends away from you which while you're dieting and if you're a mean grumpy cutter probably isn't a bad idea. lol

:fart

But on a serious note, i never use them but wouldn't have a problem with them being on a cutting diet as long as it isn't a keto of course.

The paleo fanatics blame the leptins in beans and grains for inflammation. While I have a sister-in-law that is indeed allergic to gluten I think Cordain and company tends to overstate the anti- legumes/grains/dairy stance. If you don't digest these things well then I understand not eating them but it seems like throwing out the baby with the bath water when most people are not allergic to these things.

To me it's similar to arguing fructose is bad therefore I won't eat fruit. Sometimes I think it's to easy to overstate things that are sitting in the last .01% of dietary improvements.
