The top Toronto pop radio station, 104.5 Chum FM has been running a contest to win a trip to Barbados. Basicly on the hour from 6 am until 10 pm they take the 25th caller. The next morning they draw out of those qualifiers and pick a winner, the contest runs for 3 weeks i think. My wife has been at this all week, getting the kids to help her call on our cell phones as well to incease her chances. Well last night she qualified and this morning she got the big phone call..she won!!!! it was pretty hilarious.. she was so excited. It's 7 days in barbados at this kick ass 5 star hotel, check it out my bro's .

http://www.thecrane.com/

So it's about 30 winners plus their 1 guest ( trip for 2). New Kids on the Block and Bare naked ladies are going as well. Not my cup of tea but the wife likes them so alls good. Along with all the Chum FM morning show.

Here's my dilema.. I had already agreed to be in one of my best and longest friends wedding party. His wedding takes place over the time that this trip is. If i wasn't in the wedding party it would be a no brainer and i would bow out of the wedding. I do however feel honored that my friend has asked me and I don't want to let him down.

I've never really been anywhere in my life, I did the whole hitchhike across Canada thing when i was younger, but have never been on an exotic trip. I've been as far south as Myrtle beach and thats about it. i have 4 young kids so i don't know when i would ever get this opportunity again. I know my wife could take her sis down and still have a blast... I won't bail on my buddy but this timing really sucks..

advice??

Since i've known you through these boards for so long now, i'll offer to go a long with your wife for this trip as her personal security guard :). Best not too piss off your long time friend and not attend his wedding.
But ya on a serious note do what Banacek said.. or let her take her sis.

bros before hoes man, ditch the wife and go crash that wedding. Is it open bar???

On a serious note, tell your buddy your wife won this amazing trip I'm sure he'll understand. Maybe bring him a cool wedding gift from Barbados?

Thx for the opinions guys, a bit of a mixed bag so far.

I am trying to line up someone to watch the kids for the week before I call my friend and see what he thinks.

Dude trips come and go but a good friend is hard to find. Honestly ditching yer bro like this is just like spitting in his face.

IMHO go to the wedding and let the wife have a vacation without you and if she don't understand simply tell her to STFU.....lol

WOW! Congrats on winning the trip. I think you and the wife should go....as long as your friend is okay with it. You did commit to being in the wedding party first, so I guess it would be his call. I'm sure, being a good freind, he would understand your stituation and be ok with it:)

Wow, great looking resort. I'd jump on the trip man. You only live once, why not see one of the more beautiful places in the world with your wife? Your friend should understand. And yeah, bring him back something awesome from Barbados.

GO

Considering the 40% divorce rate, your friend will likely get married again anyways. You can attend his second wedding.

i say go. If he is a good friend then he will understand about the one in a life time trip. Just make sure to bring him back something great from there.

Update..i talked to my friend yesterday and explained the situation, it didn't go quite as I'd hoped. Most people i had asked thought he would be happy for us and tell me not to miss this opportunity. He was more somber.. more or less saying that if that was the decision we made than thats fine and he will find a replacement. I know he was disappointed... I got some guilt going on. I still haven't finalized my decision, I want to hook up with him for a brew and make sure we're good. Either decision i made I would have some regrets i suppose.

Thanks for all the input all!!

Barbados FTW!! when will you be able to go to a resort like that again?? I think the quality time with the wife would be great... u could be on a beautifull beach chillin with drinks by day and spending nights with the wife.... id rather piss off my buddy than my wife, you have to live with her, unless of course she doesnt care and he really is going to be pissed, but i would think he would be happy for you... let us know how it goes.

I don't have to go into specifics but until you walk a mile in my shoes I guess you wouldn't understand. It is a free trip, there would be no trip after, guarateed no trip for just the wife and I, it's just not something we would do.
Thanks for your opinion though.

I understand people, and you said this is your long time best friend. You want to bail on him on his wedding day for a trip that will get pissed away in the toilet? Your choice, but I would expect some animosity from your friend.

So you dont have a job? Is that what you're trying to tell me about walking in your shoes? You are on welfare or something?

Right now, I could fly myself, and my fiancee, all inclusive, air fare included, for a week to:
Puerto Plata 700 each
puerto vallarta, nuevo Vallarta, Mayan Riviera 800 each

or non all inclusive for a week including air:
Honolulu from 800 each (depending on hotel)
Maui 1100 each

Cuba is much less for a 5 star, but I dont have any rates

It isn't impossible to save 1500 bucks bro, even on welfare.

When is the wedding ?

Does he have enough time to find a replacement ? Have you purchased your tex and all that ?

I can understand your situation ( not being able to do something like this again ) so I would have to say go away with your wife and enjoy the trip - Guilt free.

Nah.. not on welfare, lol. I have 4 young kids, been married 12 years and never been on a vacation/trip with the wife/kids. A trip like this is not something we would ever consider, if there was to be a trip it would be a family vacation. Our kids have always come before a vacation so i'd hardly call myself selfish. Maybe in this circumstance it may look that way but i also have to consider that my wife wants me with her. Anyways.. thanks for the info.

Plus taxes at another 300 each.......gets pricey..!!!
Unless one is going all inclusive, or renting a condo, be prepared to pay 40-50 dollars for 2 cheeseburgers, 2 salads, 2 diet cokes and share fries....No jokes!!! been there done that....Renting a condo is the way to go there..

I would say family before friends and if your buddy does not undestand this then he is getting married to the wrong women.

Call me whipped but my wife and kids come first, and if my wife wanted to me to come with her I would be going with her.

I understand 100%, and reading that you guys have not had a vacation alone with no kids just tells me that you and your wife really should take this vacation.

Your friend will understand, maybe not right at this moment but eventually will. jmo

I say, sit him down and explain that this is a once in a life time chance.. Be 100% honest with him and let him know now that when he gets married and has kids things change and so does the cash flow. You can choose friends but family is for life.

I agree with this. Congrats on the win! Take the wifey and enjoy :) It will be a nice romantic trip for the both of you!! If he's a good buddy he should understand ...sure he might be a bit disappointed but you need to do what makes you feel good.

Since you asked for advice I am gonna be straight forward and say you should kill your wife for liking New Kids on the Block. Make it as inhumane as possible. You should look into these things before you get married. ****, I'll kill her if you want.

Good friends of ours won this last year, and they had an absolute blast. If your friend is as good as you think he is, he'll understand. I wouldn't think twice about taking the trip given your situation.
