View Full Version : Old school shave

So I decided to switch up my shaving routine, and picked up a old school Gillette Super Speed 1940 and some other shaving supplies (soap, mug, brush). I'm sick of spending stupid amounts of money on replacement blades that don't even last that long and give me a mediocre shave, this routine is much cheaper as you can get 100 blades for $20, and soap is another ~$15, and will last almost a year.
After trying it out I have to say that its probably the best shave I have ever had, no joke. I think the whole process adds to the shave, but using these supplies has left my skin feeling much smoother and refreshed.
Anyone else here shave this way? If not I suggest trying it out, you can find old razors on ebay for pretty cheap, and there is a lot of info on the net. Check out http://www.youtube.com/user/mantic59 to see what intrigued me to try this method.

Yes I actually use it :)
The Maestro Livi is a nice razor. It's a bit fussy to sharpen but it holds an edge well.
I have some less meaty blades that are easier to shave with but I like the 1" and 7/8" blades for their impressive size.

I've been wanting to get one of those for a while now. Did you find there was a bit of a learning curve with it? Any cuts yet?

very nice livi, was that a limited run?
i'm thinking of going that route also but i'll start a little lower end, in case i mess myself up and stick with double edge lol.
here is my setup, can't imagine going back to cartridge razors and canned goo. razor is a merkur progress with ikon knob :beer

Ive heard good things about 'Proaso' stuff, but havent been able to locate any, thanks for letting us know!
Yes there is a bit of a learning curve, and the videos I posted above helped a lot. Surprisingly I haven't cut myself in the slightest yet, and going into it I had always thought that was a big problem with these razors.
Another tip I read somewhere to get a razor with good weight, and let gravity do the work so to speak. Don't force it but don't be a pussy thinking your going to slice your face every stroke, but watch the videos they really helped me...

Yes the maestro livi was a special run. I got lucky to get on the list and got a good price. The damascus steel is very pretty. I have a nice Robert Williams custom as well as an extremely practical piece by Joe Chandler. My wife has no clue just how stupid what I just said was thank god.

love it, it puts a pretty good curve into the blade so you get to hold it at a bit more of an angle than what most of the others DE's run.
they all shave the same in the end though so for $10 your better off.
it's all in the blades, make sure to pick up a sample pack so you can see how the different brands feel.
I only need to shave about once every 2-3 weeks if i feel like it. i can barely grow facial hair and i only have body hair on my legs. i feel bad for guys who have to shave every day, that must be brutal.
