It is predicted oil will steadily go up and therefore so will gas.
Summer numbers may be as high as $1.60/ltr by july.

In 1998 gas was at $0.52 in Ottawa.

Insane. Here today it was 1.12/ltr and by the time I got home it was 1.22.

I feel the oil barons can swing the appearance of the supply as needed to keep the price at its max

What's also sad is that in the U.S they at least give the appearance have having a competition amongst chains/stores. You'll see different prices, though all in the same ballpark, as you drive down any American street. I remember reading the here in Canada we only import like 7% of our petroleum. That means 93% must come from Alberta and elsewhere within the country. Funny how we have no pricing competitions and get tax-raped by our government.

They can investigate the chocolate bar companies over price-fixing but the gas companies get left alone?? Must be some nice kickbacks there...really nice ones. Only difference between politicians and drug dealers is that one of them gets to make the laws and the other doesn't.

The reason gas costs so much is because we have zero new refinery capacity.
Also it is important to consider most of the oil from Alberta extracts gets sent south to the USA for refining which leaves the east SOL.

It is hard to fix the price of gas when the stations make a few cents off each litre.
All I know is that Big Oil is complaining about emission caps in the tar sands costing too much when they have profits larger than the GDP of African countries.

I'm a proud Canadian and all but exporting 93% of our OWN oil is ridiculous. Why do we send our product down south and buy it back for 500% what we got for it? Major corruption in Ottawa, something smells real bad!

Ottawa has not control over oil as non-renewable energy and natural resources is provincial jurisdiction.
In reality with NAFTA Ottawa can do little to stem exports of crude to the south.

Very few people will be traveling this summer-gas prices will have almost doubled from last year by then if they rise as expected...

If it isn't our oil, it's our trees, freshwater or another of our Natural Resources that they want..

Actually if you look at the statistics Canada and Mexico have benefited extremely well from NAFTA.
Where we are getting hurt is unfair trade practices with China.

I figure the gas stations make around $0.11 to $0.14 per litre profit on average, as that's the rebate we get from coop gas each year, representing their profits returned to members.

Does the rebate include purchases from inside the store like smokes, snacks, etc?

Most gas station retailers will say that's where they make all there money. My buddy got suckered into managing gas stations in the GTA and said that margins are slim on gas.
LOL that is a funny story actually. Esso told him to move from Calgary to Toronto to be a like a senior "Regional Manager" of sales or something like. Not too bad sounding but it turned out he was in charge of deciding where to put all the Coke coolers in each location.

So I guess we can't trust those fvckers after all.

Blame the government for the way they tax fuel not big oil companies. It was less than .20 a liter in Libya and they still pay the same per bbl as any one else on the planet.

Also as BC said it is our lack of refineries that forces us to export then buy it back that ****s us. Very similar to the wood I believe sell the logs and buy back furniture, does not make any sense.

One thing to remember though is that we probably don't want to live near a refinery.
Taxes are part of the issue, but gas is only going to go up. The gov't needs to give tax incentives for individuals to buy fuel efficient cars. I am talking about something like $5000 to cover the cost of going from a civic to a hybrid civic.

****. Tax gas more and cut income taxes so people who do not drive and use roads can have a benefit.
People who rely on driving for their living still deduct fuel expenses from income tax so I do not see them getting hit as hard as people who chose to drive inefficient vehicles.
