Im planning on getting my class 6 for this spring and Im a total open book on bikes. I had dirt bikes as a kid/teenager but havent riden more than a moped since. I think Im gonna pass on a crotch rocket and I dont want some huge touring bike with saddle bags.

What are you guys riding, what would you recommend for a newb?

I had a buddie who picked up one of these for pretty cheap, I like the look of these bikes.

I have ridden for over 10 years on the street and I would recommend a bike that fits your personality. I see too many brave (or stupid) young men who are risk takers jump on a big CC bike and do damage to themselves, or worse kill themselves. Remember bikes are heavy, very unforgiving, and most of them can get you thrown in jail or killed before you get to second gear.

That being said it also depends on what kind of riding you plan on doing. Cruisers are great for long distance rides but if you plan on getting more technical in the twisties a cruiser will leave much to be desired. Personally I have liked the Standard style bikes, kind of get the best of all worlds, something like the full fairing SV-650 or V-Strom. You can take them off road, throw on some luggage for a long trip, or strip them down for the twisties.

Check into insurance some bikes are considered "exotics' and depending on your age and licensing could get very expensive.

Something to look into if you want lots of fun and have experience with dirt bikes is supermotards. I have one of these, basically a dirtbike with a street tuned engine. 300lbs with 80hp, the things are a blast. Definite hooligan bikes. Great for wheelies and jumping curbs around the city, but a little light for road trips. I still manage to ride mine to Tennessee every year.

if it's your first bike, an 1100 will cost you quite a bit in insurance. Personally, I bought a suzuki gs500. It's really cheap on insurance, it has no cool factor really, it's an air cooled 500 commuter with great mileage. You should check with your insurance first, if they insure bikes then they'll tell you their engine size cutoff for cheaper insurance. I believe most are at 600cc and above it gets pricey. I had a Honda CBR600RR. I was paying about 3700$ a year for insurance! The RR (race ready) is a killer! Fun bike for sure but stupid expensive.

Another note, enduro bikes I found out cost more in insurance than a standard bike because if you go offroad your hazards increase.

The bike style you're looking at looks good, but you may want to go lower on engine size.

Someday, god knows when I want a Harley.

Here's an insurance company worth looking into. Most people I know are with them. They're typically cheaper. They have an online system where you can enter your bike choice and other questions and you get a price.

Ive been riding for 34 yrs from minibikes to racing moto-x for 12 yrs etc...

Take test rides, then make your final decision. I ride an 06 Night Train and it is a great all around bike, from beginner to advanced. It all depends on the respect you have for any bike and riding style imo.

Just respect the bike and the road and you'll be just fine bro.

I have my car for going fast, I just want something to get into the wind with and take my time, I have no intention of ripping up the pavement on a bike, I have to make sure my daughter grows up with a dad!

As far as I know insurance in BC is very reasonable for bikes. I like that looks of that suzuki gs500. I want something comfortable for my 40 min ride to work as I would likely commute it in the summer to save on gas.

This look decent to you guys?

i use Beacon Insurance for my bike. Do yourself a favor and take a course with a reputable school. it will lower your insurance rates and possibly save your life. book now because those classes fill up fast.

I drive a '00 Dyna Superglide Sport, 113" JIMS kit, concocted by Roger Goldammer.

Buy too small of a bike and you'll regret it within 2 months of riding.

It makes little difference whether you are going 200mph or 140mph when you come off of one.

its all depends on the person, my friend started on a r6 last season and he has self control and learns really fast. He was knee dragging with in a month. I have a 07 blade, so im a honda guy. Hondas has the smoothest power delivery, easier to handle.
but i suggest everyone to give a suzuki katana a shot, its a full fairing bike and it looks nice. hopes this helps

you're paying too much for insurance. you should goto state farm if you have ss bikes.

I've has plenty of Bikes both in Ontario and Quebec.

Car Drivers and Road Conditions in Toronto Suck for those riding bikes.

Like you, I don't want to worry about safety as much so I opted for a Roadster.

2009 Can Am Spyder SE5

I get more attention on this then ANY Bike I've ridden.

** The ONLY downside is that they are expensive. Note: BRP Can Am Spyder Roadster is not a Motorcycle and does not try to be one. It's better then a Motorcycle :> **

We have "ICBC" in BC.. Insurance Corperation of B.C. We have no private insurance for basic coverage, only for comprehensive. So basically cost is the same for everyone regardless of age/classes taken. The only deduction comes with time driven without accidents.

Regardless, I am concidering a school, I still want to get my license first and take the class second. I know it seems backwards, but Id like to be on my own bike etc.

I have wrapped the speedo... After 2000 all the bike manufactured are limited to 186MPH/300KPH... My bike was built before the limiters came into play... Most bike speedos read a little high... at max speed it might show 350KPH but I would only be doing about 310-315KPH :)

Gixxman: I know what you mean. I see squids on sportbikes all the time sitting in the corner in Deals Gap talking about their performance mods, when they got 1.5" striup on both sides of their tires, then I come around the corner scrapping pegs on my motard, with a 34" seat height, not an easy task my any means. The look of shock on their face is hilarious, some of the guys have thought that I was low-siding.

I got a 650 with 40hp and I am still not pushing the bike to its limits, debating on upgrading to the KTM 990 this year.

My pipes are scraped to hell, my buddys chaincase is wore half through and 2nd set of pipes now........We have no sissy stripes on our rides...Hell CC is even getting to scrape the pegs a bit here and there...

Here is a pic from 3 years ago in Deals Gap, yes I am pushing the tires to the limit. My knees are too damaged to risk dragging them on the pavement anymore, plus I look gay in sport pants. Been riding the last 2 years moto-X style with the lead foot out, definately like it. My first year at the Gap I needed new pegs once I got home. Now I smartened up and put sliders on my pegs.

I have never owned anything bigger than a 650 single cylinder, or with more than 50hp. My friends loose me on the straight aways but I am always the camera guy at the gap following the SS's through the twisties, they just can't seem to loose me in the corners :)
