Hi,

I'm one of those skinny types, who has a very hard time gaining weight (fat or otherwise). I'm lactose intolerant so I think a Whey Isolate is my best choice for protein (I'm vegetarian).

It appears that most isolate shakes have very low carb content, I'm guessing because there's not much lactose to draw the carbs/fat from.

Is there an isolate shake out there with lots of carbs? Or should I not be concerned about that, and just get my carbs from "normal food" ?

I'm assuming I need a lot of carb intake to offset my high metabolism ...

Thanks!

Just eat whole food for your carb intake. Protein Isolates have low to no carb count and if they did have any carbs it would be dextrose or maltodextrin (which is garbage to take normally).

You shouldn't be concerned with it, get it from the whole 'real' foods.

Thanks for the quick reply! Is it correct that I should only be concerned about carbs BEFORE I workout? To provide adequate energy? Do I really need a bunch of carbs after a workout anyway?

Thanks

Post workout carbs are necessary for glycogen replenishment don't skip out on any carbs if you're an ectomorph and increase your good fat intake as well.

Add oats to your shake with fruit and natural peanut butter. You should do great off 3 whole meals and 3 shakes like that. Sweet potatoes are so easy to eat. You can get 2 cups in easily which is 100 grams of carbs. I`d eat them twice a day with a meat source. Your other meal could be an egg meal with peanut butter and jam toast. 3-4 pices of toast will be plenty. There you go, easily done!

And yes carbs are important post workout! Get at least 75 grams of dextrose with your shake. Work up to 100 grams of dextrose, drink that with some creatine, then wait 10-20 minutes and have your protein shake.

Thanks! Hey siva_ can you eat eggs and fish? Some vegetarians do. As long as you`re a vagitarian you`ll be fine...

There are some companies that offer mixes....
www.trueprotein.com
has a tonne of ways you can have your protein mixed with carbs, and at any ratio you like.....Check them out for fun if you like...
There is a great beef isolate protein out now, but you are vegetarian so im not sure you can take it, but its a good alternative for those with lactose intolerance, and has a great amino profile and tonnes of occurring creatine....
For hi metabolism increase carbs to where you are comfortable, you can also work your good fats, ie olive oils, cocnut oils, fish oils etc to get extra calories as well...

Thanks for the helpful tips... it's very complicated starting out. Yea, the only animal food sources I eat are eggs and milk, so no fish unless it's in the vadge category of course lol

milk is kind of tough when you are lactose intolerant. A shame as a gallon of milk a day is a fine weight gainer and pretty darn well balanced.

Eggs and isolate works though. You're gonna get pretty darned tired of them after a while unless you get creative.

Well, I went out and bought some ISO Sensation 93, http://www.ultimatenutrition.com/catalog/protein/iso-sensation93.html, took my first shake, and within 30 minutes I was farting up a storm and for the last 3 hours it's been the typical lactose intolerant reaction that I always get (stomach churning, pains, urge to go but can't). Tomorrow will be more of the same and I probably won't get able to go to the washroom for the next 2 - 3 days.

How the heck is an ectomorph-lactose intolerant-vegetarian supposed to gain weight anyway? Is the deck stacked against me? Very discouraged at this point....

On the bright side, I recently learned about Lactase Tablets, http://www.digestmilk.com/lacteezetabs.html. They are supposed to help break down the lactose to allow for digestion, so maybe there is still hope.

Yes the deck is massively stacked against you. If you can drink eggs it would make life much easier for you. Maybe you`re going to need high doses of powdered branch chain amino acids?

Try some other brands of isolate protein as in theory they should virtually lactose free... if you are in Toronto stop by one of my clubs and I can give you some samples to try... another option would be a good quality soy protein powder... it's not my 1st choice... but on the other hand I could never understand being a vegetarian :p

I don`t understand why you favor eating eggs over fish. Eating the unborn babies of those poor chickens is much more cruel than eating some ugly fish that dosen`t have emotions. Just saying...

I don't imagine there are many vegetarian body builders, so I can see why it's hard to understand.

Basically I try to limit my impact on the environment as much as possible, and being veg is one of the biggest ways to do it. Also I don't like killing animals when I don't have to. Eating eggs was a recent compromise I made when I decided to limit soy intake (and besides, the eggs are not fertilized).

Thanks for the help guys.

but if you eat animals that are not endagered how is that bad for the environment?

Hey Ritch,

It's not about the endangered part, although that certainly applies for wild fish stocks, but it's more about the impact animal agriculture has on water/land resources and pollution.

Just google this:
environmental impact of animal agriculture

Of course, me taking Whey is supporting the cow agriculture, but I think it's more of a by-product of cheese production. Anyway, for me it's just about reducing "where possible", not being fundamental about the situation like some veg/vegan people are.

Cheers

K, now you're rationalizing away your ideals with conjecture. Also, how much impact do you think the dairy and egg industries have on the environment? Less than the beef and pork industry? Yes, I am the resident logic critic. :)

Like I said, I'm not a purist, fundamental vegan. I reduce *where possible*. If my body could digest beans/lentils, then I wouldn't have to look elsewhere for protein. Maybe I should just choose to not be an athlete and live in a cardboard box? lol

get yourself some rice isolate protein, almond milk or rice milk or cashew milk, flax oil.

enough for 40grams of rice protein, 2 cups of the milk, 2 tablespoons of flax oil, blend and drink you can get almost 500 calories from a shake like that.
This digests like a dream, no farts or anything like that.

Also I believe at safeway they have some milk called "lactaid" or "lactase" something like that and it has the lactose removed. You could try using that before the rice/cashew/almond milk.

shouldnt give up too fast, A friend of mine is a full blown veggie eater and he is 5'5" and is over 200lbs.

You guys are really supportive, thanks! I think I'm going to give up on the whey all together. It's not worth it... I think I'm more then lactose intolerant because now my sinuses are acting up, after taking the whey for a few days.

I've been reading about Brown Rice protein, and I have high hopes for it. Yes, I do keep a large stock pile of Almond milk. It's awesome.

Now, what to do with the 2lbs of ISO Sensation Whey I bought? lol. Oh well.

Cheers
