I'm just wondering if anyone knows of any gyms in Toronto where the people who work there know how to spot. I've been working out with this training parter so far and he's getting on my nerves, I basically need spots for: benchpress (incline/flat/decline), shoulder press, squat.
The best alternative that I could some up with was using a smith machine for presses and adjusting the supports there, but it's not the same as a free bar. Most personal trainers who spot don't know what they're doing - either drop the bar on you after they lift it, or help too much, or stick their crotch into your face :p
Anyway, any suggestions to this issue? Basically I need to workout without a training partner.

Do your presses in the squat cage with the pins placed at your starting point from the bottom of the lift. Same for shoulder presses.

Snap, nice tip! Now I have to switch gyms I guess - no squat cage at my gym. Yep, that pretty much solves most of my training parter problems.

What gym does not have a cage? Curves?

Strictly fitness. It's not really a cage - adjustable supports which support the bar exist, but since they are not in a cage the bar can roll off them, so it's not the safest option, although doable. Wouldn't have a good feeling when the bar is near the edge and I'm under it. Plus those supports don't go high enough for a shoulder press.

You`ll love training in the cage. It`s great for increasing strength if you go through low rep phases, starting the bar from a dead stop. If I had a squat cage with an adjustable bench and proper weight, I`d rarely go to the gym.

Maybe I should change the title to: Toronto gyms with cages and benches, where trainers don't mind you using the cage as a press station. Basically, I think any gym with a bunch of cages should do. I have some driving to do ...

Cool, if I'm around the area then I'll swing by. I'm more around Downsview, Bathurst and Sheppard area, so I might check out Extreme and Bally's on Yonge, hope they have some squat cages. I think Extreme has like 4.
